Here's my previous video on pennies • Death to Pennies & also John's rant on the topic: • I HATE PENNIES!!!! (Al... Help me make videos faster: blog.cgpgrey.com/work-in-progr...
Canadian MP Pat Martin (patmartin.ndp.ca/) said it best: "There's 30 billion pennies in circulation and every year they were minting a billion more. It was just a no-brainer, slam dunk, that it's a place where we could save some money. They cost more to produce than they are worth, nobody likes them, they have no commercial value."
You can read the details about Canada's plan to withdraw the Penny from circulation here: www.budget.gc.ca/2012/themes/t...
If you're a super geek there is an interesting report about the inefficiencies in the economy caused by the Canadian penny here: www.desjardins.com/en/a_propos... An interesting bit is the following:
"In truth, the 'artificial' demand for small-denomination coins is rising primarily because merchants and financial institutions have to constantly add new coins to the retail distribution system due to a shortage caused not by commercial or economic factors but rather by the fact that consumers do not put their small-denomination coins back into circulation. The hoarded coins do not circulate and are not used for any productive purposes. Moreover, most people cannot be bothered to take the time to count, roll and deposit these coins so that financial institutions can put them back into circulation, no doubt because over the years, the Canadian standard of living has continued to rise, eroding the purchasing power of these coins. If nothing changes, this situation will only be exacerbated in the coming years and decades."

OK - so - 7 years later, here's the update from a Canadian. Ready? Prices are exactly the same. They haven't gone up at all due to penny rounding because that simply isn't a thing. Let's ignore the affect of sales tax, which adds a weird percentage regardless and assume everything was .99. If I buy one of those things, I pay an extra penny. But guess what happens when I buy 3 things? The total comes to 2.97... so I pay $2.95. In other words, I just SAVED two cents. The rounding only happens on the total, not on each item. How often do you go to a store to buy just one thing, anyway? It all just works out in the end. Sometimes I gain a penny or two, sometimes I lose a penny or two. Over the course of multiple transactions, it's exactly the same. Get rid of pennies. My pockets are lighter, and no one really complains. Thank us later.

I just had a weird incident while visiting America. First transaction at a store grabbing a coke, total came to something like $0.76, handed the clerk three quarters and they asked if I had a penny. I looked at them and calmly said, "I believe you're confused, pennies no longer exist". They gave me an odd look and shrugged, taking the three quarters. Got in the car and realized I must of seemed really weird...
@chriscastle1629
@chriscastle1629 7 лет назад
lol yeah they still exist here, and as people are trained at stores you're obviously meant to recieve the full 76 cents, but if you don't have that penny most places aren't going to not let you buy it because of the 1 cent. One time I had a total that was some amount of money and 1 cent, and instead of giving me the 99 cents change they just gave me an extra dollar.

Canadian here, 8 years later... Unfortunately this video is inaccurate. Getting rid of the penny lead to massive price increases and hyperinflation. The Canadian dollar is now worth 2% of what it was in 2012, the greatest economic collapse since The Great Depression. Unemployment skyrocketed, poverty and homelessness is at unimaginable levels. I'm watching this video on a Windows 95 desktop in my local library, during the 2 hour per day where my city gets electricity. But actually though - nothing changed and I pretty much forgot that pennies ever existed until I saw this video pop up in my recommendations. Who pays with cash anyway?

From practically the beginning of the US, in the 1780s, dollar coins actually have been a thing. However, after we moved on from commodity money, dollar coins were constantly ignored by people. The government actually tried to boost their popularity several times with programs like the presidential dollar coins, but they just didn't catch on after a little over 200 years. It was only in 2011 that the US finally stopped minting dollar coins, because they were just that unpopular, so unlike with the penny, it's not just the government was being inefficient. If you really want dollar coins that much though, they went out of circulation recently enough that you can probably still go to a local bank and get a bunch of rolls.
@emranismail4875

Snow Storm they will make more dollar coins based off native Americana in 2017. I just hope they get rid of dollar bill and replace it will the dollar coins. Both Republicans and Democrats are looking for ways to save money( without raising taxes or cut spending)
@snowstorm9818
@snowstorm9818 7 лет назад
Emran Ismail There's nothing really wrong with the dollar bill though; dollar coins will always exist but the fact is that many people, especially men, don't have anywhere in their wallet to put coins, and it's much more convenient to just use several bills for something, so if you're paying 26 dollars, you can pull out a 20, a 5, and a 1, rather than having to pull out 2 bills and then fish around in your coin pouch to find the one coin that looks basically like all the others. Coins are more durable, but for wallet organization bills also have their upsides.

I realised something interesting about the history of the dollar other day: 1 £ = 20 s; 1s = 20d 1 t lb = 12 t oz BUT the original value of of the US dollar was set to $20/1 t oz gold. SO if you made shillings and pence out of a troy pound of gold, you would have exactly $1US = 1 gold pence. Many countries used the £:s:d ratios of 1:20:12, but usually based on a livre (troy pound) of silver, not gold. It originated in Imperial Rome It was reintroduced by Charlemagne for his (Frankish) "Holy Roman Empire",as librae(£), solidi(s) and denarii(d) whence it made its way into many countries, including England. But the same 240th of troy pound for the dollar but in gold intrigues me :p

I love how the US still holds their penny with an iron grip, while the lowest Norwegian legal tender is the 1kr coin, equivalent to 11 cents. (As of 14/09-20) Back in 2012 (!) Norway decided that the 0.5Kr coin (5.5cent) just wasn't worth our time anymore. 2020 US is still lovi'n their penny while we have abolished essentially our nickel-equivalent a long time ago. Oooh how oddly the world works.

As mentioned in the video, if you pay by card, or whatever, the exact amount will be deducted. Even if you do still pay with cash, the odds of rounding up or down are 2 to 2, exactly the same. So on average, you'll pay the same amount. Sometimes you'll lose money, but an equal amount of the time you'll gain money. In theory, if you play your cards right, you could save 2 cents every time you go shopping.

And the UK should do the same for the 1p and 2p. You can't buy anything with them and they're uneconomical for all the reasons listed above (though they don't cost more than 1p or 2p to make, so far as I know). The last time a British coin was withdrawn from circulation was in 1984 when the ½p was take out. At which point it was worth 3p in today's money.

if you count it out (with the assumption that 1000 yen is $10 exact, which it isn't), you'd find that that's pretty well how it is in the US and Canada, with 1 yen being 1 penny. 1 penny is 1 cent, 100 cents is $1, therefore $10 is 1000 cents. however, 1000 yen isn't exactly $10, so it, of course, isn't an exact equivalent. but it makes your argument close enough to saying we should just count cents. so instead of getting something for $200, you'd say you're getting it for 20000 cents...
