As a history student myself, I wonder when the time will come for me to finally have a breaking moment where I vow to chase to the ends of the earth the smallest details written at the bottom of a page of footnotes. I am not looking forward to that day, but I have accepted it will come inevitably

Thank you so much for bringing attention to this. As a native, it's always nice to see Staten Island get a little love ... even if it is stalker-ish love. It shows dedication! ;) I hope you got to see the Terminal Moraine while you were at the Conference House. An important part of our geologic history not 100ft from where you were sitting on the beach!

911: 911 what's your emergency? Caller: Yeah there is a man wearing a black hoodie mumbling to himself, we're at the cemetery.

I know nobody will probably read this, but let's do some number crunching. The Sraten Island coastline in sources I found is given as 35 miles. This is obviously wrong, as due to coastline paradox it is actually infinite, but I have no 4eason to doubt it as solid aproximation. To be on the safe side lets say that the navigable route arpund the Island would aproximate 45 miles. to ease later calculation lets convert it to Nautical Miles. Rounded up result is 40 NM. Now, important part, 1 knot is equal to one NM/h. Now sources give top speed of USS constitution as 13-15 knots. Obviously, She is a much later ship, and fast for her time, but that is a starting point. Going down from there, lets say that fastest available ship was capable of half that speed, but due to a lot of manouvring it could avarage no more than third of it on the day with favoueable wind. Rounded down from from the lowest numer we get 13/2=6.5, and 6.5/3 gets us just over 2 knts, a speed at which you can encircle Sraten Island at just over 20 hrs. And this is a somewhat conservative calculation, the more realistic time for a fast XVII century skiff would be closer to 15 hts, and anybody with sailing expirience would know it at the time. Now, dragging tje stupud barrels might slow you down enough to make it 23hrs, but I wouldnt bet on it.

Lesson learnt: Always reply to CGP Grey's emails or he will come after you

“More than 200 years ago” does technically align with “almost 300 years ago”

I feel your pain about missing sources. An organization I belong to sent a document of ministry-by-ministry suggestions to the Canadian Government in the 80s. I found out about this from a point form history we produced marking 50(?) years in operation. Curious, I starting looking for a copy of the document. The organization didn't have it so I checked library archives. The Toronto Library says they have it but it is currently missing. I'm not quite at the level of emailing former cabinet ministers about a document they may have glanced at for all of four seconds in the 80s but give me time, I'll get there.

Probably my favourite video of all time, the storytelling is impeccable. The plot twists: excellent.

The layman might think this is a video about a boat race. The expert can see this is a prolonged explanation for why CGP Grey uploads so rarely.

The amount of source checking in this video would make any English teacher pass out.

I was delighted with your visit to the Billopp House museum. As a child it was my stomping gtounds. The curator gave me the run of the place, and taught me how and where to look for Native American artifacts on the grounds and in the surrounding countryside;not an official park at the time. It was pure magic. Sorry you couldn't get in.
