Her book, Escape, is phenomenal and she’s a phenomenal woman. Her story is literally, unbelievable. She IS also the strongest, woman I have ever read about. She escapes with 8 kids, one with a feeding tube bc of cancer, $20 and a car that runs out of gas. It will make you check your life complaints at the door and remind you how strong the human spirit can be.
Whoa, Carolyn is very good at articulating the points of reality in polygamy and FLDS. She really gets the facts straight. She is a very smart lady. Her interview is the most effective interview of these polygamists I have heard. Thank you Carolyn!

I purchased and read her book, but hearing talk about her life... She is truly a treasure. I have the utmost respect and admiration for her. I saw also another religious dressed girl. now I think they have been rescued. ok now when I see them walking again. im gonna make a point to talk and be friends with them. I think I get it now. im from Va we were so far removed from this now its knocking on my door. o my God. even the mainstream lds know. cause I was watching a lady on Facebook her daughter supposedly killed herself. but less than a weak later she was commenting about a 14 year old lds and telling kids security the tracks the boy was taking and they would be able to stop hom in salt lake city soooo they found him brought him back and a few weeks later they said he killed himself. Sandi fassbinder The LDS usually doesn't send women door to door. The LDS sends handsome well dressed young men. Jehovah's Witness women do go out on door-to-door service, but they don't look anything like women of the FLDS. JWs are always very well dressed. I live in PA. In my area, most people don't know it, but we have two polygamist groups. One group looks like the FLDS in Colorado City. The other group dresses very modestly, but they don't look as poor or old fashioned.However their blouses and skirts are always really dark colors and women wear what looks like doilies on their heads. I had contacted Rowena Erikson once about them. She tried to tell me they were either Amish or Mennonites. I am very familiar with the Amish. I explained to her my paternal grandfather had relatives,who were Mennonites and Amish. Therefore, I grew up with Mennonites and Amish. Plus, we have several Amish owned business in my area. In high school, I used to work for an Amish owned business. My nephew works for an Amish owned construction company. My cousin used to drive a van for the Amish taking them places where a horse and buggy aren't suitable. These are not Mennonites or Amish. These are polygamists. I know this for a fact, because my ex-brother-in-law's brother and his wife converted to this polygamist religion. One time, we took a trip to Wellsboro, PA to ride the antique train. It's a popular tourist attraction. Schools and clubs get to ride for a very reduced fee. While we were waiting to board, there was this group of really poor looking women. Each had several children except for the two pregnant girls, who didn't look much older than 15 or 16. Including the teens, there were six women. They had the hair swoosh, the braids, and prairie style skirts that looked as though they had seen better days. All of them looked very depressed. All the little boys were wearing these really cheap looking T-shirts that said some boy scout troop name and number.They wore the tee shirts over long sleeve button down shirts. The tee shirts did not look like anything that the Boy Scouts sell. The lettering on their shirts looked like it was poorly ironed on as if someone ironed them on at home. There was only one man in the group. I believe that he was the husband of these women; or, he was the husband of two or three of them. He appeared to be in his 40s and very unpleasant, disapproving look on his face. His shirt said Troop Leader on it. None of them spoke to each other. The women and pregnant teen girls just sat there staring at the ground. Occasionally, one of them would quietly signal to an older child to reign in one of the toddlers, who wandered to far away from their group. I'm more than certain the whole boy scout disguise was a ruse to make people less suspicious of this large group of strange looking people and to get a reduced fee to ride the train. After my family boarded the train, my mother-in-law quietly asked me why those people looked so weird. I told her that they were polygamists. She asked me if I was sure. I told her that I was very certain and why. (I had done an extensive research paper on polygamists for a graduate school course.) The one pregnant teenager looked so sad and forlorn. My mother-in-law wanted to take her home with us. So we devised a plan. My mother-in-law always keeps a notepad in her purse. We wrote our names and phone numbers on a piece of paper indicating that we believed they were FLDS and that she could leave with us if she wanted or to call us any time if she wanted our help. We kept an eye on her waiting for the perfect moment to slip it to her. We had seen her walking a few children to the cafe car. So, I got up and headed towards the cafe car. Just as I beginning to walk down the aisle between seats, an adult woman in their group got up, nudged passed me, and quickly followed the pregnant teen and the kids to the cafe car. My mother-in-law, observing all this, left her seat following behind the adult woman. There was no chance for us to slip the note to the teenager. The adult woman stuck to the teen like glue. So, we just ordered a few snacks for my kids and went back to our seats waiting for the next opportunity. But, it became clear to my mother-in-law and me that they were onto us. If they left their seats, they would go in twos. Every time that girl got up, another adult woman would go with her even into the single user restroom. If you've ever been on modern train, then you know how small the restrooms are. Antique train restrooms are even smaller. How those two squeezed into that restroom is beyond me. We saw them on the open air car, too, but they were all grouped together. There was no chance. When the ride was over and we were walking through the parking area back to our vehicle, my mother-in-law said that we had to do something. Could we just grab her and go? I was like, "No, that would be kidnapping." LOL!! The whole 2 hour drive home, my mother-in-law kept saying we should have tried harder. After this particular incident, I didn't bother calling Rowena Erickson. I contacted Flora Jessop. Of course, I was able into more details than I have here. She was convinced that they were polygamists, but she stressed being very careful and felt that we should ever encounter another polygamist, then we should slip her Flora's organization's number to the person(s). Afterward, we went back to ride the train several times that year in the hopes that we'd run into this group or ones like them again for another chance to intervene. We never did see them again. This all occurred about 10-years-ago. Ever since,it has bother both of us that we weren't able to help that girl.

Good question. I think it is slowly coming to this view, but there are too many blind eyes. Much of it goes back to a raid in 1953 that separated children away from their mothers and fathers, and did the opposite of what it was intended to do. The raid horrified the public and created sympathy. Nobody wanted a repeat of that.

Yes and I used to have such hatred in my heart for those filthy lousy parents and sometimes when I'm prayerful about it I realize that the majority of them were children who were brainwashed and abused as well, they just grew up. Such a sad situation and I pray more and more will be able to get out of the house and come to the internet and see these stories and also seek to get out. I pray that there's also plenty of us out here who will help them stand on their own two feet and I know there are.

Carolyn is an amazing woman!! Very courageous & extremely intelligent as one can tell from her interview. She was very articulate describing her abusive life at the hands of the male dominated FLDS. Her ex-husband is a very scary dude & only a very brave, determined woman would ever have the GUTS to take him & the FLDS on. She's an incredible lady!!
I read Escape before and had a lot of respect for her. I've never heard her speak before though. I love her voice and see seems so down-to-earth, funny, nice, and perceptive. I like her even more now!

Brent Jeffs wrote one as well. His story is very interesting, as a male perspective and a member of the Jeffs family. (Warren is his uncle, Rulon his grandfather). Although being a male and a Jeffs did not save him from the abuse that so many in this cult have experienced.
This woman is absolutely amazing. My whole family was raised in a cult. It wasn't polygamist but it was also mormon. My folks, my brother (14), and i (12) got out. It was heartbreaking for my bro and i to leave family, friends, and the community. It must have been even worse for my folks. Now we have been able to help others leave too. I thank God for my parents.

I think Carolyn's testimony alone should be a valid reason why polygamy should continue to be illegal. Her testimony proves how insane and abnormal polygamy really is. The truth has been told hopefully the Canadian courts can see that and agree that this insanity must stop.
+Paula7379 as much as I agree with you (I grew up in polygamy and left) one of the biggest problems is that the women have no legal standing. They are raised to be afraid of the law and the outside world and a lot of that has to do with living a life thats illegal and that their family would be taken from them. If it became legalized these men wouldn't have so much power over them.
+Misty Hernandez I agree. In the UK you can have as many "wives" (spiritual wives) as you like. Some muslims might have 4 (not many to be honest) and plenty of married men (and women have other people on the side. The only thing we don't allow is more than one legal marriage at a time otherwise there could be welfare claims abuses. What we need to concentrate on is the abuses - eg in the UK you don't beat children. In fact many of us don't even smack them as anything hard breaks the law. Sex under 16 is illegal etc etc So if you can concentate on the protection of children's rights and having refuges so people can escape you probably do better than helping keep women in fear by having specific laws which prhoibit living tiwh 2+ women or spiritually marrying more than one woman.
P Pumpkin - It is different, though. Yes, monogamous marriages can be abusive. However, polygamy is designed to be exploitative to women, because it places a man in control of multiple women who are required to submit to his whims. The man has sex with multiple women, essentially cheating on each spouse in turn, but doesn't provide for them (FLDS "bleed the beast" by relying on welfare from the government). The women have no safety, no say, no protection and no rights. They are deliberately kept ignorant and controlled. Plus, in early Mormonism and the present-day FLDS, people were taught they had to consent to polygamy in order to go to Heaven. This crazy belief has been taught for generations. That removes all choice.

Read Carolyn's first book, as well as one from Brent Jeffs, "Lost Boy", who was raped by that creepy Warren Jeffs. I also read Elissa Wall's book, "Stolen Innocence", a 14-year-old girl forced to marry her 19-year-old cousin that she hated. and her sister, Rebecca Musser's story, "The Witness Wore Red". This is disgusting and shameful that this kind of stuff happens in our country. These books are well worth the read, and it took a lot of courage for all of them to finally leave. It's good news when anyone breaks away from this sick society.
Bet those men wouldn't have so many kids if they were the ones having them. Her husband wouldn't risk HIS life and health to have another kid, I'm sure.
Moreover, those men are not being required to house & feed those women & children. These cults depend on welfare. I wouldn’t want to ever take food stamps away from hungry children! But these men should be forced to support their families, or punished if they won’t do so. I am rather stunned that plural wives ever manage to hold a job with so many children to take care of. But many of them do.

I've been around FLDS in Utah a bit. The men seem like proud providers. However, I find it odd that they feel no shame in having their wives collect welfare. I've read that 80% of the community collects welfare.

I've watched a good few of these and CJ is probably the best of them all, so clever (you can tell she got good grades at school) and strong and good at explaining the situation. Anyone who hasn't read her book should. It's excellent.
The reality is celestial marriages are not legal or registered. They can't accuse them of polygamy if they are not truly married. What they could do though is require the women to name the father when they applied for assistance and enforce the child support laws. They can prosecute the father for failing to pay the child support. This can involve jail time.
She told the father was able to hide all he had. In such an abusive parenthood it is not impossible to turn the ownership of things to somebody who does not even know. In case the men are doing business together they can always keep the assets balanced with debt. When you earn peanuts on paper and your net balance is zero you do not need to pay.
It’s interesting to watch other cultures where there is a harem. Even Old Testament stories of polygamy have long lasting effects. This is an interesting study. Thank You.
Her story is a perfect example why our country outlawed pologmy centries ago! And why it needs to be more agressively gone after. Especially since so much of their secrecy is being exposed and plenty to speak of the harm caused to children and adult lives.We need to weed out the pologimists that hold positions in power. No because most polygamous families don't put a father's name on the birth certificates. Some put a false name on the birth certificates. Cody Brown is not listed as the father on any of his childrens birth certificates.

There isnt a single element that is right or normal in every stage n situation to any of the ppl involved i.e. the wives n children. How do one man with a full time job manages to find time to spend with 54 children? Its physically impossible. The kids are so depraved of attention n love from thier father n are willing to happily accept any crumbs of attn he throws thier way n probably accepts all his abuse n watever just in order to please him n get noticed or sthg. And another thg, how did she manage to get pregnant year after year when she n her husband were at unhappy terms most of the time n especially after the birth of harrison? I mean how cud she have sex with him? And another thing, im a doctor n have worked in a woman n children hospital n judging from all her pregnancy complications AND number of pregnancies, its a miracle that this woman is still alive. The doctors have done an excellent excellent job. I respect her for having the courage n determination to continue to stay out despite the hardship she faced on the outside n not have succumbed to pressure n went back to that disgusting cult. Even in the UK a husband could not rape his wife in marriage until about 1990 as women gave continuous consent to sex in marriage. All women in Islam do that too for a start. It is just the culture of many groups - you have no right to say no. However US and UK law don't of course now take that view so in theory she could say no,. However if you don't know what the law is and that there even exists a right to say no then you don't say no.
Jana Herde she wrote in her book that it was considered adultery to not have sex with her husband, and that if she refused he and his other wives and their children would start to abuse her children as punishment
