Hearing her cover of Helpless reminded me of how in singing Hallelujah, every one of her hallelujah's had its own inflection where she conveys through each its own subtle meaning. She did the same here with each time she repeated "helpless".
six canadians on the stage and one from the us still and incredible concert its a must see if you love music the band were so good still cant be matched
I saw K.D. Lang perform in Canada as an Aussie living there temporarily and I must say it was the most unexpected, brilliant and moving performances I have ever experienced. I basically had a ticket fall into my lap, turned out to be one of the luckiest things to ever happen to me. When she sang Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen I was in tears, she is spectacular live,
Roy Orbison sought out k.d. to do his song “ Crying “ with him. Later after his death she was asked to perform “Crying” at a memorial for him. It was so beautiful it gave everyone chills…..you should listen to both.
kd lang is amazing. A song that really showcases her talent is when she sang Hallelujah for the 2010 Winter Games in Vancouver….my hometown. The video is well worth checking out.
Sorry :( e record well in advance, or between our work, so sometime a suggestion comes in and we've already recorded. A lot of work goes in prior by Chris, research, link, notes etc then editing so we try and work in advance. Next time!!!
In a Rolling Stone interview after the release of The Last Waltz, Robbie Robertson was asked if playing with all the legends made him nervous, he said only Joni did because she is so perfect in her performances, and expects you not to screw up. He said if you hit a bum note she would give you a dirty look and continue on flawlessly. You've got to watch it fellas.
Yeah, in the full show video you can see her at the end w/everyone else lined up, she was clearly not amused at the coked up hooligans she was standing next to lol
Wow. It's great to see so many amazing Canadian talents within 20 minutes. Neil Young was introduced to me by a friend when I was 18yo. Sadly, that friend was killed in a car crash a few months later. Now, whenever I hear Neil Young, I can't help but think of a friend who passed about 40 years ago. Who says music can't take you places! K.D. Lang's version was equally moving. Such a different version though, so beautiful. It is fitting that K.D. was chosen to replace Neil at this performance as she is an artist of equal integrity to Neil Young. These were both beautiful performances. This was a great pairing by whoever put this week together. Thankyou.
exactly right 100 % and other than KD fans ,this version has gone unnoticed. Such a great tribute to Neil and so heart felt but not a straight up cover, if you know what I mean...Peace & Love
Joni Mitchell's backup vocals made this for me the first time I saw it and every time since. Everyone else is amazing, but that soaring background vocal is so tremendous!
THE best rock concert ever put to film, bar none. The level of talent assembled on that stage will never be duplicated again. It unofficially marked the end of an era, an era of music that saw tumultuous changes in American society, and i was there to bear witness to it all.
Wow. KD Lang! Her voice sounds both pure and smokey at the same time which gives an unbelievable sense of softness whist being powerful…. Wonderfully contradictory.. just wow!
When the Winter Olympics came to Calgary, Alberta in 1988, a young "country twangy" KD surprised much of Canada when she carried an entire segment during the Closing Ceremony. When she stunned the world with her rendition of Hallelujah during the 2010 Vancouver Olympic Games Opening Ceremony, we in Canada were non longer surprised, just incredibly proud. Check out that performance next if you can.
K.D. Lang simply nails Helpless, brilliant voice and like always she becomes the song and sings it deep from her soul. Managed to see her when she came down-under too support our firefight fund raiser concert just after our horrible 2019/2020 Australia wide firestorms Ty GuysTy Chris Keep Safe Keep Strong 🦘🦘🦘🦘🎶🎶❤❤❤❤
Yup, everyone except Levon Helm, who was from Arkansas (and that’s his connection, re; Ronnie Hawkins was also from Little Rock). Ronnie Hawkins and the Hawks. Peace from Toronto!
you have to hear her version of halleluia and her duet crying with roy orbinson. As a proud canadian great performance. The last waltz has enough great performances you could do a week based on the movie. Thank you. Cheers
I saw KD Lang at the Sydney Opera House. One hell of a gig. Robbie Robertson from The Band is interesting because he is a First Nations man who grew up partly on the 6 nations Indian reservation in Ontario. He was underage playing in bars then formed a few bands before he got his first big break when he joined Ronnie Hawkins band in 1960.He has made a massive contribution to music & culture.
Have you heard Tom Wilson of Shine and Blackie and the Rodeo Kings fame? He is pretty amazing. He also sings as Lee Harvey Osmond (check out "Beautiful Scars" with Dallas Green).
And Dylan once asked Robbie Robertson to join his band, but he declined and was the main songwriter for The Band. And the same Robbie Robertson, a Jewish & 1st Nations Canadian kid who wrote the 'greatest' American anthems of the deep south such as 'The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down'
As well as Evangeline, another classic historic sound from Robbie's brain that truly tied Canada's Maritimes to Louisiana, in what now another piece of Americana.
Robbie was asked by Bob Dylan to play back up for him. Robbie said he was in a band and they were a group, they played with Dylan for awhile, then went out on their own.
The Last Waltz were held at Winterland, not Fillmore. Joni Micthell sings a song later "Coyote". The whole concert is amazing it is available for free on TubiTv.
I assume you are hot on the trail of the Cowboy Junkies ? Their version of Lou Reeds Sweet Jane is off the chain,a real watershed moment in popular music.. Still playing due back here in Australia 2023
I know this cover, as I am a HUGE VU fan but no its not. here thgis week...... I think week 2 it could have a peep, I will mention it to Chris. Cheers Alex
Been a fan since the '80s when kd began playing the western Canadian circuits doing stunning Patsy Cline stuff. I'm now 75 and still love to hear her, especially her Orbison songs. Seems like she has sung with the best everywhere and just keeps on improving on each.
First off, the IMPORTANT comment is right below this one but I do have a bit of trivia for you: Neil sings a pretty mellow song for a guy with a head full of snow. At one point in the film you can see a little crystal ball hanging onto one of his nostrils. Martin decided to leave it in.
I'll just see who comes to mind: FM, Lighthouse, Max Webster, Triumph, Syrinx, Bruce Cockburn, The Tragically Hip, The Poles, Rough Trade, Murray McLauchlan, Nash the Slash, John Mills-Cockell, The Bare Naked Ladies, Blue Rodeo, The Cowboy Junkies, The Headboys, David Pritchard, Bryan Adams, and a whole string of very well known female (yes Loreena McKennitt is one) singer/songwriters and everyone else who isn't on the top of my head. And you river blokes undoubtedly all the rest. (And it is ok to slip in Great Big Sea and Long John Bardly.)
The Last Waltz is a seminal film and more so moment in music. The Band culminating their career & asked friends to join them and it was just that a completely authentic brotherhood of music on a special night.
got to love KD in her bare feet :)......her cover version of Leonard's Hallelujah is brilliant...take your pick...Vancouver olympics or Canadian music awards with him present.......Peace & Love
If you watch the last Waltz Robertson was playing rythm to Claptons lead at one point Claptons guitar strap falls off. Robertson took over the lead when Clapton got his strap fixed and Robertson went back to rythm pretty cool
Lol, might I suggest that the old SCTV show might have suggested that the Canadian national dish is back bacon & maple syrup, along with beer to drink? Anyway, the Band was terrific as Bob Dylan's backing band (they were The Hawks then) and they are the musicians that played with Dylan on his recordings that became known as "The Basement Tapes." Not sure if all of them except for the drummer hailed from Canada; I think that is the case... no doubt they ran into Neil Young many times over the years!
Yeah!!!! Canada Week!!! Classic song by artists in their prime... and k.d. lang is aways brilliant (not sure I like this orchestration though... seems to take something away...) Looking forward to seeing where your journey takes you.
Any idea when you guys will be back on air??? Its been quite a while!!!!!!! looking forward to your reviews again. hope you are getting closer. Looking forward to your whit and crituqe Duane Allman whipping post Filmore East and Mountain Jam Brian Adams and Tina Turner Its only Love
Started following you when I came across your Aussie week videos but have stayed for Canada week. Don't know this song but preferred the bonus version. By the way I think the Aussie national dish is the Bunninngs sausage.
@@TheThamesmen Bunnings is the largest hardware chain. They provide a BBQ for charities, sporting clubs etc. to fund raise by doing a "sausage sizzle". Single slice of white bread, sausage, fried onion, tomato sauce. Zero nutritional value but a trip to buy hardware is incomplete without a sausage on the way out.
Joni Mitchel was on stage with the band. She just decided to jump in on this one from the back. btw - you spelled k.d. lang wrong - she is all lower case.
Oh ya, if you can find THE BAND playing ACADIAN DRIFTWOOD you'll get a more recognizable lyric than Gordon Lightfoot (he'd suffered a stroke prior to the Reno performance) tune and a little Canadian/British/French history lesson as well.Oddly enough sung by the only American in the band ( hint...Acadian morphs into Cajun)
Blackie And the Rodeo Kings with Kathleen Edwards on fiddle do an amazing cover of "Acadian Driftwood" but I am a huge BARK fan so I may be prejudiced in favour of them.
The Band were such a talented group, sadly Robbie and Garth are the only two left, always loved listening to Rick Danko and Richard and Levon - great vocals and brings me a lot of joy and memories watching this ❤
Well done on the K.D. LANG insert. How great is it to see an female artist who's not dependent on her side hustle as a stripper (Lipa/Minaj/Megan thee Stallion) to succeed . Great voice, great theatre exceptional talent. I'm a hard rock enthusiast but anytime I hear KDL singing Patsy Cline I have to stop and listen.
I never understood why Joni sang off-stage in shadow for this song. She came onstage later for a couple of songs, including Coyote. Oh….you guys……if you are not familiar with Joni, you MUST RECTIFY that! One of the top 5 singer-songwriters of the last 50+ years! (For me; Mitchell, Dylan, King, Cohen, Simon) My top female artist. Had more of her albums then any other person or group. I’m horrified you are not at least passingly familiar with her massive catalogue 😱.
There are some great Canadian acts that have been around more recently and some still performing today: The excellent Broken Social Scene, The Besnard Lakes, Spiral Beach (now defunct, but two members went on to form Moon King). Regarding helpless, there is a great and very different cover by Yukihiro Takahashi (Yellow Magic Orchestra) and Bill Nelson (Be Bop Deluxe): ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE--KRMokk6rMw.html

Joni Mitchell would be a great person to do a reaction to. Not sure why she was in the shadows here. Neil Young writes songs to match his interesting voice. He's quite good on the guitar as well.
@@TheThamesmen Ah, but Spam is both devious and agile! It would have no problem hiding in a curry dish, particularly in collaboration with habañero peppers. You'd never know until the next morning, when you'd know more than any human should ever have to!
