she made this performance so haunting. I appreciated the words even more somehow. Leonard Cohen stated this was his favourite cover of his song, and she performed it when he got inducted in the HOF.
Nice reaction! I think this will always be my favourite rendition of this song. KD has an amazing, powerful voice and is quite capable of doing all of the vocal gymnastics that too many female singers feel the need to do all the time. The fact that she “undersings” it I think actually makes the song more dramatic and beautiful. More emotional. A perfect example of sometimes less is more.
I liken kd's singing to how David Gilmour plays guitar. Both have incredible mechanics but neither tries to oversell the song. Each note has the perfect placing and is held for the exact right length of time to draw the most emotion out whether it is voice or guitar.
Earlier in the day of the opening ceremonies, a young competitor, Nodar Kumaritashvili was killed when he lost control of his luge sled during a training run. The tragedy sent ripples of shock through the competitors and makes kd's performance all the more poignant.
LUUUV K.D. Lang, one of my all-time FAV vocalists! SUGGESTION… K.D. does a rendition of: Roy Orbison’s song “CRYING” …She originally did it with Roy as a duet, so there’s the studio version & at least one live performance that I’ve seen on YT w them together. After Roy passed, K.D. always performs it as a tribute.
