Advice on playing Canadee-i-o by Nic Jones. When not touring I'm available for online lessons, for intermediate and advanced guitarists: www.samcartermusic.co.uk/contact
This video -- in conjunction with the video in which I perform the song here: • Canadee-i-o by Nic Jon... -- is intended to shed light on Nic Jones' arrangement of Canadee-i-o, and is something I've chosen to post online as a guitar teacher as well as a Nic Jones enthusiast.
In contrast, as an artist I perform my own material as well as my own versions of traditional songs. As such, I don't play Nic's arrangements at my own gigs. You can find videos of many of my own songs among my uploaded videos.

This is years after the video was made but like another commentor I have only in the last year discovered Nic Jones and this somg is on my favourites list on Apple Music. It’s an absolutely wonderful rendition of the song which repays constant listening. Thank you so much for your wonderful and clear explanation of what’s going on with the guitar tuning and picking technique.

What a treat! Quick story. I've loved this song for many many years. This week I decided to change my musical life. I ordered an acoustic guitar, I'm leaving my blues band, and devoting myself to studying fingerstyle guitar. And Canadee I o was the first song I decided to learn. I was in dadgad and knew I was missing things. On a whim I searched RU-vid for a lesson, thinking - no way. But! I found your post! Generous and insightful lesson. Great playing. You nailed it. Thank you! I have work to do!

@samjohncarter A very restrained reply, well done! In my opinion, it's generous beyond measure that you're sharing this - it gave me a fighting chance of learning Nic's glorious version (6 months and still working at it). Guitarists will always want to emulate their heroes' playing. Nowt wrong with that - it keeps the tradition alive. Again - thankyou for your generosity in posting rather than just keeping the skills to yourself.

Very close to Nic's original arrangement and technique' well done! I first heard this when Nic played at a small club in Welwyn, just after "eggs" had been released. I'd just brought a Fylde and was blown away by the way he made his Orsino ring and I went away clutching a signed copy, determined to learn it. I've always played it in open G. I'm now heading off to re-tune the guitar to Bflat and give it a go! Thanks

Seriously big thank you, Sam... I was listening to Canadee-i-o in the car, thinking "what the hell tuning is that?". Brilliant job! I feel sure I saw Nic Jones play (5 string) banjo once; but it was folk club days and I drank a lot of beer then. It's personally weird how you've got all this sorted so well but you never saw him play. It's like you're an archaeologist digging up a piece of Roman pottery that you think could be a cup and I'm stood next to you saying "Yeah, I remember Flavius throwing that at Actinium coz he made a joke about his mother..." I feel so old! Anyway, I'm surprised there aren't my contemporaries (or slightly older) who actually paid attention to how Nic played and can comment here to fill in the bits where you're still having to guess.

This is a helpful and illuminating video for those curious about this style but unable to see Nic play.Nic used a small metal thumbpick(from Germany, made for zither players) and no fingernails. Carthy does the same,I think. If you look on the cover of Penguin eggs it's just about visible,slightly out of focus.Supposedly you need two fingers to do the 'slap'.There is footage of him playing this song(1980) in a studio-somewhere in the BBC vaults.Thanks for posting,just the same.

@fionnghaile Hello. Yes indeed, Nic's version is brilliant. If you listen carefully at the start of the video you will hear me say 'this is a video I've made to show as closely as I can how Nic Jones played Candee-i-o on the Penguin Eggs album'. I record very few traditional songs as I write my own, which you can find online, but if you do want to hear my own version of a traditional song check out 'Oh Dear, Rue The Day' from my album 'Keepsakes'.

@jvidmaar 11 лет назад
Hi Sam, Great vids always. I love this song, but I prefer the Dylan arrangement from Good As I Been to You. More prosaic, but I dig it. Any suggestions on how to work out the tab for Dylan's? It has a disorienting delay that makes it hard for me to figure. I assume it's one guitar and finger-style, but it sounds like he's zipping up and down the neck in standard tuning?!? Any suggestions would be way appreciated. I'm an intermediate guitarist at best, bear in mind - but ambitious.

Sam You are fantastic. I love your style. How do you get that low Bb to intonate so true ? That must be around 63 Hz ? Secondly if folks want a metal thumb-pick they can make their own by flattening a Jim Dunlop banjo thumb pick . Those are readily available. You hammer the blade flat, and file to smooth the edges ( can also file for thickness to soften the tone.. ) . Thanks again for your unselfish tuition. Pat
@samcartermusic
@samcartermusic 6 лет назад
Thanks Pat! Yes, probably telling that the low Bb isn't used in this arrangement at all. When it is used you just have to be super gentle with it, even if you're using a fairly hefty string. I'm only using a .56 here, since most of the time my low string is tuned to a D or C. I reckon if you were using a low Bb routinely you'd probably be looking at a .60 string and maybe even investing in a fan fret guitar. Thanks for the metal thumb pick tips too.

Thanks for the great video! Very helpful! Two questions: For playing the rhythm, would you recommend resting the palm of the right hand behind the bridge or playing with a floating wrist? Also is there any muting with the left hand going on while playing the percussive "slap"?
@samcartermusic
@samcartermusic 7 лет назад
Hi, I'd say the palm rests lightly on the bridge and takes a bit of sustain off of the bass strings, as well as putting the hand in the best position to get a nice percussive thump with the middle finger flick (works better closer to the bridge). And no there's not really any left hand damping going on there. Hope that helps!

More banjo comparisons. That tuning is virtually the same as double-c tuning on a banjo, (just a tone down and with extra low strings). It's about the most common tuning claw-hammer banjo players use, and the 2nd most common tuning banjo players use in general.

Hi Sam. Great video... but please, if you would be so kind, could you please take 2 minutes and explain what exactly is happening with the percussive "flick"? The video is cut off and I can't see what you're doing. Are you pullin up and snapping the string against the fret board? Been playing for 20+ years and just discovered Nic earlier this week!!!! Anyway, I really want to add this one to my bag. Tahnks for your help. Tom

he's using his Index finder to drum the sound board at the same time his thumb plays the third string (g in standard tuning). you can see this if you watch his great video playing the tune. What also works is if like me you have the bad habit of using your little finger to support your right hand at the bridge, then you can also use it instead to create the percussion. maybe not exactly what he is doing but with practice it sounds reasonably close.
