Sharon Martin That's more than most Canadians can say. The rest has nothing to do with your comment, so I'm sorry for going off topic (sort of) in my response to it. As for that first dopey news crew being so surprised we knew the words to the US national anthem, you're idiots. This was at a sporting event where you very often hear both anthems before the game, more so with hockey. So after watching sports for a few years we hear the US anthem so often it's almost impossible not to know it, I am sure it's the same for most American hockey fans.
We learned the lyrics in French and English when I was in elementary school in West Virginia. I can still remember the words although I can't guarantee the French will be correct. It will be sung in good faith and earnest. Thank you Canada and can't wait to visit you again.
For me the feeling has always been mutual but I've rarely if ever seen that sentiment shown in public. Proud to see my fellow Canadians saving the Star Spangled Banner and the recognition from my favourite foreign country whose strength & liberty are a beacon for all.

Every single Canadian hockey fan knows your Anthem..we heard it every Saturday night during the season from birth and because you are not only friends but brothers and sisters to us we were only happy to help out..but if I'm not mistaken there was a reciprocal thank you south of the longest undefended border on our planet..no politics..just letting ALL our boys play..I thank all of you..*drunken rant ended* (but for the record: go leafs go!!)
I’m not much of a Hockey fan, but I know the Star Spangled Banner and I’m betting A large portion of the Canadian population does as well regardless of whether they like hockey or not. I have to say I’m somewhat shocked that the US is surprised that we know their anthem.
Canadians are the US' greatest friend. We owe them so much, between the safe passage of US diplomats through Iran, 9/11 allowing us to land aircraft on their runways, and fighting equally step for step in WWII. I would welcome Canadians in any US city.
We also fought as one regiment in WW2 called by the Nazis as the Devils Brigade. First Special Forces. The Nazis were terrified of this group. There is a great movie about it.
We also went to Afganistan and lost some great soldiers. We were in WW1 and 2 right from day one. The Americans were late for both wars but thank God they did show up big.
If there's anything people in the United States know about Canada; it's that the people of Canada are extremely nice and helpful. Canada is like the kid in school who always had extra supplies on hand to share with the rest of the class and would let the new kids sit with them at lunch.
From growing up in the Detroit area and being a Red Wings fan, singing along to "Oh Canada" was a no brainer when they were playing the Canadian teams!

Damn, Canada- that made me tear up with emotion. That was a beautiful thing, and spontaneous at that. A lot of Americans don't know the Star Spangled Banner that well. You have this American man's gratitude and respect. Just wow.

This clip is one of the things that make me proudest of being Canadian. If nothing else, that defines us right there, caring as much about others as we do ourselves.
As Canadians, we particularly love our hockey. With so many American teams in the NHL, a great many Canadians grow up hearing the Star Spangled Banner a LOT, starting from a very young age. It's ingrained in our memory

I grew up going to devils games… and I used to sing the Canadian anthem when Canadian teams would play NJ. For some reason the Canadian anthem hits me in the feels more than the American.

Was at a Wings game once where a youth hockey team from Windsor sat in the row in front of me, kids about the age of 12. All of them sang both the Canadian and US anthems.
I'm ashamed to admit I could not sing Canada's National Anthem aside from a few words here and there, but this makes me want to learn it and I just might do it right now after learning about last night's repeat of this very same situation. Thank you Canada!
I was there, our section started singing when the singers mic went out. Every sports fine in Canada has grown up watching, NBA, NFL, MLB and we know the words to the Star Spangled Banner as well as any American.
Many of us older folks grew up mainly just watching NHL, 'Hockey Night in Canada', Saturday nights. It was the highlight of the week and all the kids would be talking about the game at school on Monday. For many of us, that's how the Star Spangled Banner got ingrained in our memory. Cheers!
True. In my eighth-grade class in 1978, as part of a North American history assignment, we were required to learn the American national anthem. Everyone in the class could either sing it or write it out. Ninety percent of the boys in the class already knew it by heart from watching sports.

I'm a Canadian. In the seventh grade we had to learn the American national anthem. We could sing it, recite it or write in down. Anyone who was a sports fans already knew it by heart because we had heard it so often.
When a four year old I knew heard the American national anthem she was like "The hockey song!" We all know the American national anthem because we watch so much hockey 😂

You're welcome! It's a beautiful anthem. Us Canadian's help others, it's what we do. Honestly, between sporting events (especially hockey) and police/military band functions, I've heard it so many times, I had it memorized at a young age - I'll sing it with my southerly neighbours anytime!
As a Canadian, I know the Star Spangled Banner just as well as I know Oh Canada. That's from years of hearing it on hockey broadcasts. My American friends are always impressed that I know it considering they don't know my anthem at all.

I wish more people knew about hockey, even if they weren't going to be fans of it. That good morning america reaction killed me, because as an american, I completely understand what she means. Yeah 5 years ago I wouldn't have known the words either, but just being a part of the hockey community actually brings us closer together, and it isn't surprising at all that they could finish it. I hope we can return the favor sometime.

Sad. So sad we like in a society so free we have to regress and restrict. Soon "command" will need to be changed to "recommend" due to "command" being to forceful. People need to realize the slippery slope they are going down. You may find yourself loosing grip and falling.
"Slippery Slope" arguments are logical fallacies. If you don't like the change, say so. Don't pretend that it somehow represents the first step in the end of civilization.
Alex my young friend you are very wrong and as you mature you will see the error in your thinking. Change is inevitable. We all know that and we all accept it. Forcing change when it is not needed due to illogical ideologies is where the "slippery slope" starts to rear its ugly head and you will end up looking at yourself thinking "What have we done". You are too young to realize it now but you will. Or at least I hope you are able to get to the point where you will... Otherwise you will never be a very happy individual. I am old and grey and have forgotten more about logical argument and historical development than you appear to know.

Canada is superior to the USA in SO many ways that RU-vid wouldn't even allow me to mention them all in this comment box. And by the way: I am American nor Canadian. I am a keen observer. As for your last suggestion that Americans would stand up to sing the Canadian anthem: they don't know anything but "O, Canada....". To illustrate how dumb that is: we DO know BOTH your anthems.
Us Canadians do hear US anthem alot, to the point where we do know it off by heart. At least the majority of us Canadians, anyway. Through Tv sports or hockey games in the hockeys arena's and a bunch of others places.
When it comes to Hockey hearing the American Anthem is just as common as hearing our own. Every Canadian sports fan knows every word of America's Anthem I assume. 🇨🇦🇺🇸😎👍
