i am 77 years old and grew up in the 50's/ 60's - no one in the family ever said bad things that I heard but there was info out there if a black and white married they were arrested. The couple had to go somewhere and hope no one found them. This was not in the south it was on east coast of America. Having grown up with this attitude, when my daughter chose to go out with black men, i was opposed - it's been 40 years and i have softened. i can't blame my parents or myself for my thoughts but i do feel it was the way society was, at that time. i wish Candace and her husband all the best. She is a beautiful, intelligent woman.

Like you, my Gram Dove was probably the singlemost positive force in my life. She grew up in an America where there were butchers and textile goods, but no grocery stores; you made your own clothes,bread, soap for washing, grating it for clothes and dish water. Canning was a necessity and butchering an animal in the fall to put up in brine was economical... although Kellog's existed, popcorn w/milk for breakfast was the order of the day ! She imparted a whole world of knowledge to me. She lived thru the Spanish flu by praying and also thru Spanish War, WWI, WWII (the beginning of the computer age w/Alan Turing at Bletchley Park decoding German ciphers), The Korean Conflict, and The Vietnam Conflict, and the She knitted gloves for soldiers,bandages for lepers, fed more people on her back porch than she could count during the great depression. She had her own personal covenant w/God and she didn't speak much about it...she just lived it. She made it thru the 8th grade, and taught herself the stock market, and hairdressing. She thanked her God for how much luckier she was than all the things she did for people and never forgot it. There was no time to get in trouble or disrupt humanity. Whenever my thought wanders towards negativity, I thank God for my grandmother Ella. As Crosby, Nash, Stills, and young sang: ''Teach your children well.''🌏☮AND💜✝.
