Candela Obscura is an ongoing monthly horror drama that follows an esoteric order of investigators as they use centuries of knowledge to fight back against a mysterious source of corruption and bleed. Leveraging gaming as a story mechanic, the series features the Candela Obscura tabletop roleplaying game from Darrington Press, which is built on the Illuminated Worlds system.

Okay, Chapter 1 was a great introduction to a new game system and a mysterious world. Chapter 2 took us fully into that mysterious world, full of action that left us on the edge of our seats asking for more. Chapter 3 is... roleplay, it's trauma, it's about those who were affected by the mysterious forces and try to either return to normal or face it and take control. Neither is better than the other, they are just different.

I don't know. In Brennan's case we knew something intense was a about to occur. For Aabria it was something the cast seemed to brush aside. Although, had Travis been there he probably would have been making his warning light hand signals.

The guy spends so much time doing ridiculous ad reads and playing goofy troll characters and doing everything he can to screw with everyone else at the table, that he makes it easy to forget what an incredible actor he is. And then episodes like this happen and it hits you like a truck.

At 1:49:25 when Liam just rapidly states "I finish my wine really quick." it reminded me of that scene from Ratatouille where Anton Ego almost spits out his wine but then he realizes that it is an expensive vintage so he swallows it instead. Like Cosmo was not wanting to waste a good wine in a similar fashion.

Cosmo: "Tide and Bone, Keepers of the Light." Ancient Water (god?): "You were known to me in my time. Yes." So Candela is Old. Really Old. Which is interesting and a bit disturbing, organizations that old usually have a lot of baggage and agendas, and in season 2 we got a look at a place that didn't make them out too well. Sounding more and more like an eternal SCP Foundation of sorts.

I was just reading the rulebook this morning. Candela dates back to Oldfaire and maybe even before, but it had a different purpose. It keeps the name but its purpose evolved after the fall of the empire to the organitation that is now. It's really interesing, it's not just "this is an ancient organization and this is what it does" but has a bit of history and events that shaped and changed how things are run and how it works. Given the limited amount of pages they had, so far I'm very happy and even mildly impressed by the depth they are being able to convey in the lore of the book

I love all the characters so much. Sam pulled off "I'm the parent" again. I just love old characters and Liam executes Cosmo perfectly. Ashly is great. I believe that Elsie is dying. I haven't seen much of Gina but she has an amazing character and is plaing her amazingly. And Nishir is the coolest. The consept is so intresting I might just steal it. Thank you, Aabria.

I love how each of the GMs have focussed on different aspects of the world. Matt's run was all about introduction to this scary world, Spenser focussed on the toll this world takes on those who are aware of what happens behind the curtain, and now we have Aabria showing the desperation of the disenfranchised. It's all still horror, but each run is unique and brings a fresh perspective.

This may be my favorite dming piece of Abria so far, I usually don´t fully resonate with her style but im immensely pleased with how she develops the story and transmits the feelings when the tone is more serious. Im very glad to have given Candela a chance, each of the circles has felt very different in what they transmit while fitting masterfully within the stories.

Great roleplay and storytelling from the entire table. All the Circles so far have brought a different angle, but this one has to be my favorite. The way Aabriya managed to present the party with a sympathetic source of danger and honor the Circle’s choices while still implying there could be consequences… just dang. The portrayal of structural inequality of multiple kinds empowering the jeopardy of the Phenomena… chef’s kiss. Everyone really brought their A game and Oscar killed me this session, but Madame Glask using empathy and shared trauma as a wedge against the threat was just so damn heartfelt. Kudos to Gina. Every single one of these characters was so well portrayed. Thank you for this one.

I like how this episode deived a bit more into "the lore" of the city, it makes the world feel more lived in, and I like stories of desperate people trying to use forces that they dont fully understand and the consequences of it, specially if it was all for a "good" cause (Also nice LoL refernce)

I love my Critical Role no questions asked but then I started to really enjoy the one shots a lot. Now these series it’s just so good and this Candela series it’s my scary story I can’t stop watching. Aabria Iyengar has me on edge her storyline is incredible and combine that with her voice gets low and thrillingly cold it’s just sucks me in. Sorry so long

Loving all the these so far. I can see/understand why some people dislike this game as well as some people like it. I'd love to see B. As much as I try to like everyone, Aabrias DM style would benefit greatly if she was able to “cut on the fat” and like 20-30% less. There’s 6 people at the table and this borderline feels like a one man show for extended amounts of time. Try to condense the plot descriptions. And/or There’s no need to comment so much the players do for minutes.

I somehow feel like the else grandiose DM somehow disapproves of Mme Glask. She often gets some kind of drawbacks (e.g. ep 1 when talking to the first victim. In ep. 2 rather more often), which is not as kindly transported as to the other players. I know that the story does not allow everything, but I just feel that the dm unwillimgly treats her a smidge less kindly than the other, more melodramatic characters and leaves her a little less options to act as intended. I still love, love, love the storytelling, but I sometimes stumble over the sudden change of interpersonal temperature.

Honestly, I like a mix of both. I enjoy Candela for it's narrative focus, and Dnd for a more set system. Both work for me, but i get it if you're not into candela.

I really tried to like this series. It's just.... boring. I can't get invested because I know the characters won't be around long and the story doesn't add anything to a larger world. I guess that's my ADHD or Autism speaking but I refuse to do one shots with my group for the same reason. I will never miss an episode of the main campaign but this.... I can't get invested.

It's how I feel about this entire mini-series thing and that bums me out because the players are awesome and the DMs are all great. But this game system is boring to watch and vastly inferior to "Veasen" for example. But that's ok, not everything is for everyone ;)

Boring? I get not being attached to the characters as much in these shorter arcs and I guess not much happened in this episode, really. Yes, this one feels more like setup without much payoff. But one the whole? The world is pretty interesting, the characters have CRAZY backstories, I think I'm still a little broken from the Needle&Thread arc with what happened and also seeing how hard a GM can dish out harm if they want to in this game. I think the genre is not everyone's favourite with the bleak outlook and disempowerment, and I can see that, but boring, honestly, would be the last adjective that comes to mind for me.

@@Sarah-oj7bh It's funny cause I absolutely loved the first two chapters. It's just this one. And personally I wouldn't say boring necessarily, but maybe just seems a little slower to me. I don't entirely understand the story nor am I super invested in the characters. But again, everyone is allowed to have different opinions.

@@Sarah-oj7bh I guess everyone sees things differently. No one's opinion is right or wrong. Personally for me I absolutely can not get invested in short lived characters. There isn't enough to make me care about them. With the bigger picture, for me, there isn't enough consistency, the world building is creative, and it's a different genre to main campaign but little tid bits of info here and there about the big picture without any of these things connecting in a meaningful way..... I have to stand by my opinion. There isn't enough consistency for me to care if these characters live or die or if they complete their mission. Next quarter there will be another mission and other characters and these will be inconsequential then. I am in no say saying you're opinion is wrong, opinions by definition can't be right or wrong. I simply see the CO series in a different way.

I don't understand why Glask talks in third person. I'm wondering if she is just new to role-playing or nervous about been on camera but it's really weird. It's a little distracting and takes a little bit away from her character. Hopefully if this player gets to be on more shows, she will get more comfortable and stop the third person weirdness.

Third person is a totally viable way to narrate your character's actions: ) Books are written from that perspective all the time. Her spoken dialog is still in first-person -- it's natural to flit between

I love everything about the intro though couldnt help but pause at the missed opportunity for true horror in the first murder; it takes at least 40 seconds for an adult to drown after water has entered the lungs. Mere seconds would be considered a mercy.
