Absolutely loved this video. I have been making candles for 6 years now and still am always looking for good testing advice and you nailed it with this video. I am in a group that always talks about how hot your jar should be or not be while it’s burning and I’ve been checking mine to see so it was good to hear your explanation as I have felt too that it’s going to get hot as there is a flame inside of a jar. I am going to watch your wick video next. Thanks Wade for all your helpful tips and tricks. Look forward to trying the twisting of the wick, as my htp 93 will sometimes curl down on me.

Thanks grace. I appreciate that. You actually bring up something that had been on my mind lately. I've been getting tons of requests for a video on my you tube channel. I've always been hesitant because well.... sharing numbers sometimes comes across odd. But also don't necessarily want to encourage the wrong idea ya know. I have a channel based off my business and not the other way around. I'm happy to share and I will just hope it is taken the right way. Because i agree I think there is a lot of fluff out there which doesn't help anyone. But also think it's important to focus on the business first, channel second. It's what worked for me as well. Ohhhh... Now I see! Doing two separate test burns with the best performing wick makes absolute sense. I usually just do an abusive burn and call it a day. Glad I've only limited my sales to friends and family at this point. Phew! Thanks, Wade! You're the best!

The explanation on the melt pool was super helpful! Too often I get a nice melt pool at 3 hours, but then testing days later I get different results. Testing is absolutely the hardest and longest process. And yet the most critical. Thank you for the wonderful videos you make for us!! 💞

You have been such a great resource for all things candle making and have have definitely helped focus and narrow my process down in my own exploration. One question about variance testing - do you trim the wicks in between burns? I'm guessing a good combo mix would simulate 'reality'...

Thanks for the video very helpful I found that with my wax 464 soy and my cd18-6 wicks are a great combination I test and have good ht and ct and there good in my 8oz and 10oz jars I do full day burns with no problems.

Thanks so much Gaby. The main thing with wicks is.... knowing the wax your going to use first. And then your jar. Those two will decide your wicks mostly. Do you know what wax and jar yet? And have you seen my wick video. It's about a year and half old but I plan to an updated one as well at some point

Thank you for explaining the melt pool. I have had nothing but issues with too much flame dancing and a large flame, mushrooming and the glass gets quite hot after a few hours when past 50% mark. Ive tried several wick sizes and preferred the results of the smaller wicks but ruled them out due to them not hitting the common melt pool expectation. Il go back and look at smaller wicks...fingers crossed i can solve these issues!

this helps a bunch, especially since I'm wick testing a harder paraffin wax, which requires wicking up. definitely right about multiwick candles achieving a melt pool quicker than the standard one wick candle, I've got one going now and its got a mp in 3 hrs, tiny bit of wax residue, MP under 1/2 in deep, 3 lx 14...some may say oh that's perfect but I'm gonna try 3 lx 12. again thanks for the videos, I really enjoy them

I Just Love watching your candle teaching channel! I Know you are a candle maker as well, but you are simply amazing ! I have a question I have been testing the 10- oz apothecary Jars. The wax I am testing With Is 50/50 blend of Paraffin and soy. also C-3 Nature wax. okay I have tested 1 - wick only in each jar wick - Cd-20, Cd-22 a very nice burn almost a full pool with Cd-22. also tested 1- wick only Eco 12 - Eco 14 -, Eco, 16. Then I doubled wick Eco 2 - and Eco 4 no luck! Now this was Testing with the C 3 - Nature wax. My first attempt right now is the Paraffin soy blend and I have doubled wicked with L x 12, L x - 16, L x -18 and I have a feeling 2 out of 1 is over wicked lol ! but worth a try! My Diameter of this 10 - oz Apothecary is 3 5/8. I also Ordered zinc core wicks I have a great bundle of different sizes of these (Premier wicks) but I will try these as well with my Paraffin / Soy Wax blend. I also ordered every Htp - wicks that I could. Just asking if you can give me any advice on a couple of wicks I can test? Thank you so much!

I have this store where they give a specific wick for a certain diameter/measurement of a jar... Good thing u uploaded while it's still on the cart... Guess i have to try every with wick they offer and see what best fits my standard

Yes definitely test. They give good starting points. Most suppliers do. But they are just that, places to start. Its impossible to have a specific wick that works because wax type makes the biggest difference. And fragrance as I discussed can make a difference too. Thanks for being here and your support. Thank you Wade for your informative video as usual, I have two questions: 1- Regarding the mushrooming,, when you mentioned that if we had mushroom after approximately 7 hours this to be considered (ok), so my question is: did you meant here this a continuous 7 hours or it is 3 hours first burn and like 4 hours second burn??? I hope you get my point and I hope you can see my question in this old video 2- Regarding the power burn test during the vraiances burn test, what would be the rest time between each burn? thank you in advance, I really apperciate your respond

Really helpful insights as usual I'm testing new wicks and waxes at the moment and having dramas trying to double wick large tapered jars tunnels are oblong. Hmm

Yah they can be tough. Oblong is normal for a while. If sized properly... will often catch up. But it's normal for sure. If jar is large enough you cN try 3 wicks if necessary as well but probably too much.

Testing this week on candles my unscented was amazingly perfect. Pool lovely, burn slow and not over 2inches at highest point. My tin test was hot to touch but able to move from one room to next without scorching fingers. Maybe that’s normal. I didn’t mix fragrance very well into wax and boy did I learn that could be dangerous my glass jars reflected that the most. I counted 3 flames in jar with one wick for a moment ! 😅After watching different fragrance mixing and testing videos I feel my most recent batch will be better. So far cold throw is yummy but I can’t wait to burn, completed two different better mixed fragrance batches... wish me luck!

Yes that is quite normal and common. Wqx melt waxes should be a bit firmer where container candles are usually softer. Try provlend 650, pillar of bliss, or c55

Wade - I've been trying to wick an 8 oz amber jar candle with Problend600. It's Bonfire by The Flaming Candle Co. I used the HTP wick you used in the video where you taught how to make 6 oz jar candles in your kitchen. The flame burns super slow and a bit weak but burns consistently. I wicked up to a CD6. The flame doesn't soot, smoke, or dance but it's at least, an inch in height. What should I do? I'm a graduate student, trying to launch my website but keep encountering wick issues. Depends on the wax. Anything but soy... 2-5 days. If mostly soy or all soy, week or so. I also get in the habit of every once in a while pulling a candle from stock that has been there for like a month + and testing again. I like to make sure it behaves the same as way as initial test showed even after sitting a while. :)

Lol. Its okay. People always like to argue and put other stuff down. It's nature of the world we live in. Not everyone agrees about everything. And we all do this differently. There are lots of ways to do things in candle making. Was just sharing how I do it. My right or wrong, just a preference. :)

One question about candle safety: do you measure the temperature of the outside of the jar with an IR thermometer or do you just use your hand. If a thermometer, can you give a maximum temperature I should aim to stay under? Thanks!

I do both. But ASTM standards recommended under 175 °F. I try to stay around under 160

Wade, love your videos coming all the way from Australia! I'm having such issues with my wood wicks. Very low flame, almost just simmering. Is this because the width of the wick and the compatibility of wax is not right? I'm using a Coco soy blend for a 3.5'' diameter vessel and my wick is 14mm. It's so stressful!! :) Keep the videos coming. I'm learning so much. Thanks.

Hi Tammy. Thanks! Woodwicks are finicky and don't work well in all waxes. So thst may be the reason. Sometimes it's the specifc FO. If you don't think it's wither one of those.... Keep experimenting with wicks sizes both thickness and width.

Thank you so much for your videos! They are so informative and make so much sense. I do have a couple of questions that I can't seem to find the answer to.... I use Soy/Coconut/Paraffin blend. How long do I let it cure before I can test? Also, once tested, if obvious no go, is it ok to dig out the wax, remelt and reuse it to test another wick in the same jar? Thanks again! I don't use that wax myself. But to be sage if test after 2 or 3 days and then again after 2 weeks to check for consistency. Yes you can reuse for testing purposes. And thank you. :)

I love your videos, this was definitely helpful. I'm struggling with wick testing a lot, and I'm not sure if you mentioned this part and I missed it, but how long should it take for a full melt pool, based on container diameter?

Hi Maybelis, I didn't reay answer thus specifically because it depends on the wax. Some wax is soft and will get a more faster than one with a higher melt point. But it doesn't mean either is wicked right or wrong. For example, melt pool between a soft spy wax or a soft problend 600 wax is quite different than a wax like 6006 which is more of a soft slush for the first few burns. If you get a consistent melt pool for the majority of the candle without it tunneling or getting too hot you are in good shape.

I'm sorry if this was addressed, but I found your channel and it is so helpful! When you do the Variance Burn Schedule, how long do you want between burns? in the Proper Burn you said you wait 4-5 hours, but I didn't want to assume it was the same.

Yah for letting them cool in between there really isn't a set time because larger jars or deeper melt pools might need longer to cool. Certain waxes need longer too. So I wouldn't necessarily day they all need to be 4-5 hours. Just long enough to reharden

Wick type will depend on specific wax and will wildly vary so would definitely need more info. But, try premier 700 wicks, lx wick, cdn wicks, and eco wicks of haven't already

I have been wicking to get that full melt pool on the first burn, and in my testing today a couple of my candles seemed overwicked at the half way mark...back to the drawing board! Can I ask how long you were in the testing phase for before you launched your business? I feel like it is going to take me forever LOL

Hey Tammy. I took my time 10 years ago. I didn't start selling or operating as a business unlike at least a year of making, testing, and learning. But... at that time there were no resources, youtube channels (shameless plug), online suppliers and help were limited, and so on. So it took longer back than as we literally had to figure everything out ourselves and it took a while. Fortunately, I had business knowledge so that part I was pretty comfortable with. These days, its easier to learn candle making but I do see a trend of people rushing the "business" part too quickly without taking the time to learn it. But that doesn't apply to everyone obviously. My advice...don't feel like you need to rush it. :)
