Yahya Abdul-Mateen II leads Nia DaCosta's Candyman as Anthony, a struggling artist who decides to explore a dangerous source of inspiration, the Cabrini-Green entity of Candyman. Legend has it, if you say his name five times in the mirror, he'll kill you.

The use of reflection in the film was amazing. Reflection of the production credits at the beginning of the film, reflection of the building number that the child walked out of in the opening scene 916, reflection of buildings flipped upside down, the use of mirrors, reflecting on the past, internal reflection, reflecting of his arm, reflection of Breonna choosing a man similar to her father, reflecting on the purpose of art, reflection of real life violent acts committed against Black people in the ending credits, etc. So much more than a slasher film

Thank you so much Perri for encouraging others to check out reviews for this film from critics of color . Although I don’t consider myself a real critic but I enjoy reviewing films and sometimes it sucks to see certain films of color and the critics critiquing them getting the short-end of the stick while others get the views and clicks. I always been a fan of yours, and this just made me fan out even more for you. 🤗

Looking forward to watching as I will always watch everything Yahya is in because he is Yahya and deserves all the success. I have no nostalgic connection as actually only watched original for first time last year and liked it. Will be interested to see box office and audience reaction as seeing the phrases "not scary" and "deliberately paced" used in many reviews.

I just watched it and thought it was excellent. I can see the criticism people have with it and that's all well and good by me. As someone who hasn't watched the original Candyman enough, I thought this was better than that. The performances were all great though I can understand how Domingo kinda hams it up towards the end there, but it was fine by me. The cinematography and score were excellent and I didn't mind the tamer death scenes that there were. You're right the real world stuff this film tackles are way more scarier than the titular character. I could go on, but suffice it to say I came away quite positive after watching this film.

I just got out of this and I wasn't expecting some of the choices they did. I had no idea this was a sequel at all so that really surprised me and they do a great job working that in. The music was not as impactful as the first movie, I liked the performances but I felt like it was missing a bit of that psychological angle. The reveals in the third act got muted with a bit of social commentary, but it didn't bother me, I think it will for some. It did a great job of setting things up to have big pay offs like a Hereditary or The Ritual but didn't have that punch for me like those movies. I got notes of Velvet Buzzsaw and it made me want to pick up the pencil to do some sketching, overall I think I liked this movie. Especially the final shots.

I absolutely LOVE this movie (I've went to see it multiple times already, and for some weird reason, every time I finish watching it, within hours, I'm wanting to watch it again, lol - It's haunting me in a good way). This horror film, is one of those rare horror movies we are able to say that even though it was genuinely creepy, it also is a very beautiful piece of cinematic work. Do know if the studio has offered Nia DaCosta a sequel to this part, since the film has seen overwhelming success both theatrically and critically?

So went to see this movie on Sunday. Growing up on the west side of Chicago I have witness gentrification, but the term has been miss used. Not all neighborhood growth is racist or inherently bad. Sometimes people (of all cultures just move). This movie doesn't go into depths about the different reasons why development happens. This movie was ridiculous. Please tell me how the police new they were in that specific apartment at the end? The movie never explains the significance of saying his name five times, and or why in a mirror. Jeeper Creepers would have been a better movie to sequel...lol. The over the top flamboyant gay couple was unnecessary & flat out weird. All in all this movie sucked & was a complete failure. Paw Patrol did better on its opening.

(i'll make it short because i'm not english born) 92candyman was my favorite horror movie, the dvd has the perfect audio comments btw! n°2 was awfull, n°3 was kinda okay if you were into it (when then 92 was a masterpiece that needed no sequel. 2021 version is pretty good, it lacks just the subtillity of the original...(you notiticed i did may bestnot to mention this title too many times , only looking at my keyboard or my screen, i do respect that legend even if i am frensh and as white as you).

Right? People are giving it good reviews simply because of the social justice messaging. This woman won't even trust her own review and says to see black people's reviews. What kind of servile and childish view is that? This filmed lacked in so many things. Bad script. Bad pacing. No atmosphere. Bad score. Wasn't scary at all. Cinematography was good, that was all. If this would have been made by a white person with a white cast, it would have been eviscerated by critics. What the hell is wrong with white people in the US?

This was a very weak sequel. I have noticed a pattern though. White women review this movie in such a tepid manner. They are scared to death of giving it a bad review. My question is why? This channel, for instance, has a handful of subscribers. How many of them do you think are black? Is the key to a decent rating just shoving in social justice messaging, then the movie basically cannot be rated badly? This movie wasn't scary. It had no atmosphere. The story and script were a mess. But since it preached about how whitey is the cause for all the problems for black people, that makes it a decent movie?
