Are you considering getting a Cane Corso dog? These majestic beasts are like having a furry tank in your living room, but before you make a decision, it's important to understand the pros and cons of owning a Fur Tank.
In this video, we'll take a look at the loyalty, low-maintenance needs, intelligence, adaptability, and potential downsides such as stubbornness, protectiveness, prey drive, and health issues. With this information, you'll be able to decide if a Cane Corso is the right fit for your lifestyle and family. So, let's dive in!
Cane Corso, also known as the Italian Mastiff, is a large and powerful breed that originated in Italy. They were originally bred as working dogs, used for hunting and guarding livestock. Today, Cane Corsos are known for their loyalty and protective instincts towards their families, making them excellent guard dogs and companions. They have short fur that requires minimal grooming, and they're not overly active, making them a relatively low-maintenance breed. However, Cane Corsos can be stubborn and difficult to train, and their protective nature can make them aggressive toward strangers or other animals if not properly socialized.

My first experience with a Cane Corso is my daughter's. He is the most gentle, loving dog I have ever been around. He always has a ball in his mouth, wagging his nub. My daughter has a 4 year old and a 6 year old. We have tons of pics of the 4 year old using him as a pillow. No worries. Once when we went to visit he was in the basement, I entered the house, but he didn't know I was there, so when he came up and saw someone in his house, he charged. One of the scariest moments of my life! I screamed his name, and it was like hitting a light switch....right back to loving mode.

One of the best dogs I ever had the privilege of knowing was a Cane Corso. Her owner put in a lot of work with her and it showed. She was so well behaved and thought she was a tiny lap dog. Her bark was great and meant business. I loved that if she barked it meant there was a reason. She left an indelible imprint on my heart and I miss her dearly.

@@TailWaggingTales no. We fed him kibble since he was a puppy. He hated it but he had to eat it. He developed canine acne and other skin issues after 10 months old and for over a year. It was so bad. Then I researched raw diets and did the switch. It was thought at first but he loves his raw food. After a month his skin issues started going away and now he has been on raw for two years and he has lots of energy, happy and doing wonderful. That would be a good topic , the different diets and their pros and cons. I believe all dogs are different and some can tolerate kibble better than others. My Corso definitely was born to be wild. Corsos arent "Just a dog" they're a lifestyle. Its a huge commitment to have one. Do not get one if you think you'll ever need to rehome them. You NEED to know what you're doing. @5:58 No, they're not good at traveling and moving frequently, they like to be home.. protecting their castle.. they need stability.
@TailWaggingTales
@TailWaggingTales Год назад
Thank you for sharing this tip about not liking the travelling. I appreciate your insight.
@Janeway1269
@Janeway1269 Год назад
This is an excellent point. A LOT of breeds, including many guardian and herding breeds etc, prefer routine. Some lines do better than other and they all need to become adjusted to travel at an early age. Competitions require travel so it becomes important to get them to associate positive experiences with travel, during the early socialization window. They'll still be happiest at home but at least they'll be able to deal with going places. They are NOT dog-park dogs! I don't like seeing people letting them run loose in new strange dog groups constantly. That's not the best way to socialize any dog and with a Corso it's a risk.
@newporg6887
@newporg6887 Год назад
@Janeway1269 I got my girl December 2021, she was a puppy. I always took her to the dog park with my boy, who is a St bernard/lab mix.. she has always gone for car rides and to the dog park. I noticed last winter she only wanted to go out on warmer days 0c + even with her winter coat on, she only liked warmer weather. ...so now, she really just doesn't wanna come for car rides.. I have to leash her to get her to come with us. She likes the car once she's in it.. I have an outback, they both have lots of room.. but just getting her out of the house she doesn't wanna do. My girl does great at the dog park.. she loves everyone and all dogs. But she knows our pack mentality, she knows I'm the boss, she knows my boy is Alpha.. so she knows her place, and that puts her at ease.

My Corso is coming up on 3yrs old and has travelled with us since he was 10 weeks old. He LOVES to adventure. With our guy, he is quite literally happy to do anything, so long as his people are with him. He likes long road trips & short ones. It makes no difference to him so long as we are there. WE are what makes him happy. I have heard of Corsi that don't like to travell, but, I also know many that do. Might be individual to the dog. I 100% agree with everything else in the comment. They are a massive commitment for the entirety of their lives. Best time sink ever tho, in my humble opinion! :) If you're ready for it, that is. :)

Knew this breed via friends. During the pandemic a friend passed away and he had a 1,5 year old pup. We adopted him and fell in love. Sure they are "a handfull" to maintain but isn't any animal you take full care of? Stop whining about that; go all the way or go home. Our fella is a good boy who does his utmost every day to please us and thus himself. If I HAVE to mention a downside; the fact he doesn't know that more than 1 metre apart from us is NOT a problem....your shadow gets taller than him at a distance....😂

@TailWaggingTales Ah yes; the so called colour in your voice. That is actually a basis in communication; whether to humans or dogs 😉 I do not know how old your family member is but way back in the day when I was young (and fab as I like to prank myself...) I had my first dog; a Staffordshire Bull Terrier. I went to a puppy class with him and they taught us to use colour in your voice. Sure we felt like idiots in the beginning with high pitched tones for reward and low baritone tones for correction but when I look back it was all worth it; all my dogs after decades have been raised like I mentioned and they all were and are dreams to walk with. Even our cats we treat the same way and people are stunned about it...and we crack up laughing because it's a "simple" but effective trick. Hope your family member finds the right path to go in upbringing the dog....soòoo rewarding after all.

Why have alot of them "croped" tails?
@TailWaggingTales
@TailWaggingTales 6 месяцев назад
In contemporary times, the practice is primarily upheld for aesthetic reasons. However, in the breed's early days, when it was initially introduced to safeguard livestock, the ears were expertly cropped, and the tail docked strategically to minimize the likelihood of a predator gaining a foothold during confrontations.

I only have a little over an acre, and I want one- but I think they need more space than that? I've trained, and been honored to "own" a large dog before, but I want to make sure. I also know that you basically give up an entire year, or more, of your life- they go everywhere with you, they learn everything that way. My Gus had his own cooler with bottled water and Scooby snacks 😘
