Thank you to John Curtis for requesting this! I walk with a cane, and have been training self defense stick for ages. Great content!

Two feet and a heart beat... best advice ever for fights involving blades. Great video.

Sorry, that is advising that I give them my back to attack me in and let them run me down at there convience to do it since they will all but inevitably over take me in a foot race. And then instead of having at least a chance of mounting a defense I get to have them annoyed and be at there mercey when they do catch up and have my exposed back right the fuck there, and my wind now used up to boot. No. Standing and actually protecting yourself is best if your not a pro footballer or Olympic level track athlete.

Nice little video Cane fighting is often overlooked I studied it while practicing Kok Soo Won it was my favorite weapon. I've since read several manuals on cane fighting including Franco Cane Fighting, Barton Wright Sherlock Homles self defense, and Hoyer self defense for Gentlemen and ladies. I carry a cane in those situations were it is illegal for me to carry a firearm.

I've carried a walking stick since highschool. It waa for defense back then, now it's for bad knees. But in 1991 when walking a man came out of the shadows & i saw him drawing a big knife (6 or 8 inches is my guess) I parried with what was basically a 2nd party in saber then started downward blows in a figure 8 to his head. He ran I chased for a little bit then he ran into the woods. I still have the stick & it has a small chunk on the side where it caught the blade! Lessons 1) sticks are excellent for modern self defense against most things except guns & they can be carried pretty much anywhere. 2) my stick was too light weight to KO the attacker even after multiple head strikes; I now carry a much stouter hickory stick that carried for over 20 years & I've been walking with daily for about 10 of that.

Nice, I love Cane Fencing. There's also a lot of material from the manual of Giannino Martinelli straight from the 1800 Italian Cane Fencing.

The cane does give you a greater reach than a knife. Also, the very presence of a cane would act as a deterrent to a knife-wielding attacker. It says to him your a hard target!
@jamesw713
@jamesw713 2 года назад
No, a cane is carried by the elderly and injured. It shows you're a weak easy target. Saying that I carry a cane a lot when in areas I can't carry my firearm. They can misjudge me and find out the cane is a force multiplier that gives me reach and I have trained with. I prefer a cane with a hook and hold it like I would a saber or my basket-hilt.

@@jamesw713 At the time the manuals were written, canes were carried by gentleman and high ranking members of the military. If you use a cane today, then yeah, you are probably weak. Fighting manuscripts, though, were usually not written for elderly people.

I have either my CS pistol grip city stick or my CS heavy sword cane. Even when my ankle worked fine. Never had a problem flying with the City Stick. Col Monstery has a good story of how he used his stick against a knife attack.

Training to snipe hands and skulls with a cane is good for people who need one as they have limited mobility.

For anyone who practices saber, a cane is a good substitute on the streets. If someone has a knife, definitely strike the hand, as hard and fast as you can, multiple times. Aim for the fingers, wrist, forearm, and knife. If you disarm the attacker, keep the slashing going between you and if they keep coming, pick soft targets and keep striking.

Charles Roworth has a section of his book specifically for applying saber techniques to canes/sticks.

Any cane with a metal (or wood) knob on the top is considered a 'weapon' in most all US states. If it has the hand crook, it's a legal 'medical device' in all states. But just as good for head bashing.

where i live it´s popular to walk with poles (looks like ski poles). that could give a attacker a nasty suprice. when it comes to the law. It wouldn´t be any problem. as someone threatend me with a weapon and I used what I had in hand.

I like your videos but this one is kinda bad. Yes, against some drunk idiot who mindlessly waves his knife, anything with longer range can knock off his weapon or create a distraction for finding a way out to flee. In any realistic scenario chances of stick/cane person being slashed and stabbed is very high and techniques you presented are not effective against someone with really deadly intentions.
@josephlucas4024
@josephlucas4024 2 года назад
It's overall a problem I see in HEMA where people assume the person is just going to do a rigid motion and then completely stop so they can do your technique. I guess it mostly comes from the vagueness of the sources in combination with a lack of critical thinking. Most of them don't answer questions like, "When or why would I do x technique over y technique?", "What kind of person should I use this technique against.", "How do the drills/training make me better in a real situation?", etc.

Definitely keep distance if you cannot run away. If you have to fight with your long big stick, use its advantage. I would use it as a mace and short one hand spear, depending on the circumstances.

I love living where I live. We have constitutional carry. I can have anything from rocks to sticks to machine guns and there is nothing that can be done about it. I can carry a sword anywhere I want. They might ask questions, but it stops there.

If only there were more comprehensive living cane/short stick arts in Europe, India, Africa etc.... oh wait, there are ;) btw I've actually defended myself against a blade with a stick...if one hasn't what's the frame of reference here because I see several issues even with how you're applying techniques with the cane vs a knife here. :(

This looks very weak. The intial block, stepping off line, crossing over both your feet, & guard to stike is a silly " move" to recomend for self defense. You folks might want to edit this. There are no sound moves for real world defense in this video. Props for earnest intentions 😊 Stick to sports. Warmest regards
