I make mostly bean hole beans. Had them once many years ago at a family gathering and was hooked. So good actually that at the end of the day, leftovers were put into pint sized containers and auctioned off. (if there was any leftovers) lol Not so much anymore as I'm getting older and it's a lot of work. However, I've experimented with mimicking the process in the oven or a slow cooker. The 3 differences are; 1) The cooking temp in the ground starts off very high and very gradually decreases over the cook time of 10-14 hours by itself naturally. Overcooking is all but nonexistent. 2) The lid is never removed, nor beans stirred during the cook. Key here is no vapor loss. Vapor is flavor. Also, no adding of fluid, it's not necessary. 3) If the main ingredient includes "Canned Beans" it isn't "Homemade." Just my opinion. Tin can's equal, uuuum ketchup! It was refreshing to see your process that doesn't include a can opener. At the end of the day difference between can or dried, is an overnight soak, and about $10. ($2.5/can) We aren't dooms day preppers, we're eat thriftily preppers. We printed your recipe and will be giving them a go. Also, might make a small batch of just the sauce to put into some pulled pork, or brushed on ribs. Pure money there! TYFS John Great cook
I like the very detailed, clear, step-by-step instruction you give, Great Lakes. It's perfect for someone like me who has never tried this before. How are you doing, my friend? Any troubles with the nasty weather you guys have been having to deal with lately? Hope all is well with you!! God bless.
Thanks Joe. Doing pretty well. The weather has been OK here, just a lot of rain. There was at least one tornado quite a bit west of here, but thankfully nowhere near me. How have you been?
@@GreatLakesPrepping I'm doing okay. Very busy, but okay. Been seeing some very colorful skies lately because of the solar storms. It's beautiful, but a person must realize the possible consequences. Since I began prepping, it's been for some type of grid-down event, whether that be a CME or EMP. My theory is that if you prep for the worst, you are prepped for most. I'm so glad I've got the preps I have because apparently these CME's are just going to keep getting stronger and more numerous.
Nice. We've a ton of beans getting planted in our garden so I will def make these. Now I need to find a recipe for Bush's chili beans. Bush's are the bean kings.
