Wonderful little video that makes the rest of us feel a little bit better about our swims! Loved Maya’s analysis and the fact she was so grown up in dealing with it she even had the straight thinking to save some kit. Many adults are not that level headed. Credit to herself and her parents!

Hi Ray. Don’t think we’ve capsized our canoe yet But me and 12yr old Ava swamped at thistlebrig a couple of years back and she did great to help paddle to the shore. Ava, now 14 had her first proper swim in a sea kayak this year though and like Maya had a little moment and then realised that after all the practice we have done she got it right. Held on to her paddle and boat and a few minutes later we had her back in her kayak and moving on. Capsizing is just part of paddling, it happens occasionally.

Good swim and recovery! Maya’s a natural for sure. We’re all in between swims. That’s quite a record to have paddled so many times without a swim. Those innocuous little pour overs are deceptive. They often are “sticky” with enough power to hold the boat in a sidesurf for a long time. Whereas more violent looking holes/hydraulics or “stoppers” will spit the paddler out quickly and not be much of a keeper. For all you paddlers out there, psychologically we should avoid using “negative” commands involving “no” or “not”. Often to the person receiving the communication, they don’t register the negative part, so it comes across as a command to do the opposite. In this case saying “stop paddling” would have been a clear message what to do. But hindsight is always 20/20, and it’s easy to be an armchair quarterback after the fact…
@RayGoodwinCanoe
@RayGoodwinCanoe Год назад
Yep absolutely right on the psychology of avoiding negative commands and generally I will avoid that. But the main problem was it was very noisy and so Maya couldn't hear clearly but even then still a mistake. Yep she did very well in the water. So proud of her. In my kayaking days I have been in some very big hydraulics! I have seen big ones that were keepers. But good comments and thank you.

It happens :) The shallow pinch in flow can also dramatically increase the drag on the bottom of the hull at times, which can be surprising if you’ve ever tried paddling upstream in the shallow apexes of the turns. You both have a fun story to tell now, and it was a valuable experience!

Stern paddler stopped bracing and grabbed the gunnel. An upstream brace would work well in the stern. Also a low brace in the bow could help.

My paddle was on the wrong side for a low brace: no stroke was going to save us on the upstream side. the gunwale grab was a last futile attempt to keep that side down. All explained in the video. How do you get the boat back once that happens?
@RayGoodwinCanoe
@RayGoodwinCanoe 2 года назад
It was quite easy here. Because of the ledge and wave the current was quite reasonable downstream. I swam to the upstream end of the the canoe and started swimming that to the shore, current hitting side then helps take the canoe there. Once I was in slow water I could risk putting my feet down and work to the bank. Pretty straightforward on this occasion. Maya did well in collecting loose kit allowing me to get the boat.
@davidedwards2764
@davidedwards2764 2 года назад
Good footage. Very unconventional but a cross stern draw might have saved you. Gets the paddle on the downstream, you leaning downstream and pulling on the blade would give you an anchor to lift your upstream knee. An upstream low brace is theoretically possible but very tricky to execute particularly in this dynamic situation. I’d say the problem was compounded by your differences in weight. A heavier bow paddler hanging out on a high brace would have offset your weight tending to lean upstream
@RayGoodwinCanoe

A few years back and I might have been doing that cross deck draw. Sadly the body is getting a little slower and it never happened. Cheers

The old man flipped 'em with the upstream paddle stuck right into the current while braced off the hull. Never rudder on the upstream side when pulling out of an eddy. Should have been a crossbow draw, although even a hard downstream lean would have kept it up.
@RayGoodwinCanoe
@RayGoodwinCanoe 2 года назад
The paddle was on the upstream side for the turn back into a surf, totally normal. It was out of the water before the flip. See my video on surfing a canoe or even the inset footage to see that in action. The intention was not to pull out of the eddy but to surf the wave. Problem was Maya pulled the bow into the oncoming water upstream of wave due to my miscommunication. Yep a harder lean would have probably allowed us to get away with it. Many thanks, The Old Man

The canoe was already going over. Nothing I could do on the right would have saved us. So throwing my weight to the left was the last chance. I would never have got the paddle there quick enough. So a gunwale grab is acceptable in that last resort situation, a last attempt. Mind at 70 I am coming to the end of running some of the bigger stuff. You should have done a brace stroke on the right side, slap the water with flat of paddle. You grabbed the left side of the boat pulling it up and pushing right side into the water.
@RayGoodwinCanoe
@RayGoodwinCanoe 2 года назад
A brace/support would not have worked on the upstream side, trust me on that. If I had been paddling on the left a brace, on the left, would have enabled me to put more weight on that side. I am very used to side surfing far bigger waves than this and that would have worked. By the time we did the grab it was too late and the canoe was going over, it is the water flowing under the canoe that causes the capsize not the grab. The issue was committing to the surf with the paddle on the right, that move failing because of the communication error on my part. We then needed to edge/lean the canoe to the left but without my paddle on that side I couldn't commit as much weight as I should (Maya doesn't understand this process so it was down to me. If you have a look at ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-CyA_-Ifn5ws.html (How to surf a wave) From 4.40 you can see me using a brace on a far far more powerful wave and on the downstream side. Hope that explains more.
