Yes, D3 D3s and D4 are FAR superior than anything Canon offers. In the past, I used the Canon. Today I use Nikon. It is a whole other story. Canon is a toy, Nikon is a professional tool. Of course when people just print postcard-size photos and prints photos at the supermarket, they can use any camera. But if we look at the quality of images, at the quality of lenses, of prints, sensors, everything, then Nikon is the professionality, and Canon should deal only with multifunction printers.

In terms of video, not a lot of people are mentioning the D4's 2.7x crop mode, but Moose Peterson claimed it was one of the main reasons he had to have the camera since he shoots nature with really long lenses to get in closer to nature every little bit(or in that case a lot) helps.

love that tune at 5.42! i had a test drive on this monster and to my mind, this is just a dream machine for any pro photographers, nikon guys or canon guys. it's way too phenomenal to be loyal on one brand, i'm no pro but i want one!

@enticing imagery re watch it,I went through all sorts of specs, not just fps. and yes, to sports shooters, purple who may actually buy this, fps is a big consideration

I've shot Nikon for 25+ years using (F3/F4/F5/D2H/D2Hs/D2x/D2Xs/D3/D3s/D4), and having $$$$$'s invested in Nikkor glass I jumped shipped and moved to Canon. After shooting with a Canon Switch Kit ( a 1Dx w/ a 400 f/2.8) at a Titan's game last year I was hooked on the speed, the superior ergonomics, and the build quality. I sold ALL my Nikon gear and started completely over with Canon. So far no regrets. Nice video, I enjoyed it!

I have done the same thing but from a nikon d800 to a canon 5 d mark 3 and i regret it .. the only reason i can immage will worth the change its speed and ergo omic .. but those are cameras right .. so to me most important its the immage quality .. nikon image quality its way superior to me .. dinamic range as well and the famous canon skin tone looks way to satureted.. now this is just my opinion .. as i wrote in the below message im not a fan boy ( in fact i was ready to change for good )and maybe the 1dx immage quality its way better then the 5 d mark 3 ( i never shoot the 1dx) but about the 5d 3 i realized that i just hate the colour , the intensity and the dinamic range plus in post production with the nikon d800 i have more room for changes .. im a photographer i dont want to use photoshot as a lot of people do .. normaly i use lightroom and photoshop just to clean the face .. with the canon its not enoght with the nikon files this happens to be enoght ..

As far as color saturation goes it is not a big deal if you know how to set up your camera properly to your taste. The main thing is learning how to tell your camera what to do and not letting your camera dictate your results. I always shoot manual, at least 98% of the time. I also do very little post processing...maybe a crop and if needed some levels adjustments to adjust contrast depending on lighting conditions. You can't compare a 1Dx to a 5Dmk3, it's like comparing apples to oranges. I've shot D4 and 1Dx side by side and they are both top end cameras and do what they are supposed to do, but after two years with the 1Dx I still have no regrets about switching to the Canon 1Dx. It's a personal preference. At the NFL games this year I've also seen a lot of shooters who jumped ship for the D3/D4 but came back to Canon. There has got to be a reason.

The 200f/2 is the best indoor sports lens on the planet. The Nikon glass has ALWAYS been better than the Canon stuff, but the Canon bodies were ahead. . .that changed with the D3 and I am sure the canon bodies are better than they were, but I wouldn't use one if I had a D3, D3s or D4 within reach. JMHO

last week I tried the 1D-X with 600mm f/4 mk 2 lens. I was blown away by the performance of both the lens and camera body. very fast in terms of AF and images were sharp as hell.

I don't think he only focused on fps. He also said the auto focus and tracking was better. And mentioned the d4 was a downgrade to the d3s. Additionally the resolution is a bit better. Looking at the 5d3 I have to assume the 1dx will be close to the d4 in low light, but will ultimately loose in that regard.

You can always add a little text bubble over the video to update it with more current info -- that way people who are watching it now and don't know about the firmware update won't be misinformed.

D4 has a buffer for uncompressed 14 bit raw - 69 whereas 1D X raw - 35 frame. So, doesn't the D4 shoots longer in a same fps ?

They can, you can enable mirror lockup which ups the fps on the camera to 14.

Hey Matt the D4 actually doesn't have the little plastic rear screen cover like the D800 etc.do, you stated that the D4 does or can have one but that is a mistake,I own both of these cameras and the 800 as well as a few more of each and some olympus, I'm not just a stat reader, I do own the D4 and it doesn't come with and you can not order one from Nikon. A third party maybe but not from Nikon....cheers.

Matt, I would love either camera. As a current Canon user, I am bummed that the EV comp only goes -/+3, but the Nikon D4 has the "green screen" issue that can give you false WB appearance when reviewing images. Some people have jumped ship because of this. If I have the money I'd have both though. Drooling for both! Thanks Matt love the new channel thus far.

Almost a year later, he sold his D4 for the 1DX. But atleast he still isn't about the brand since if you think about it, nearly every camera is near identical to each other when you shoot them atleast UNDER ISO 800. Seriously, a Canon 1100D can take as good of a shot as a Canon 1DX if you know what you are doing. But then again, it's like comparing scissors to a lawnmower. You can cut the grass with scissors, but a lawnmower can do it faster and more efficient, but still debatable on quality.

I'm still not sure if the 1Dx or the 5D Mark III will be my next body. I don't care much about burst-rate and wonder if then the $3000,- price difference isn't a little bit too much.

In regards to AF, I've read the Canon pulls focus much faster than the Nikon, whereas the Nikon grabs focus much better in low light in comparison to the Canon. Any experience with this? Great job with all your video reviews btw.

Definitely! I'm photographing in soccer in the German Bundesliga and having a 14fps burst can decide weather to get THAT shot or not. You are not shooting for 10 secs like that. only 1 or a half second. You can get used to it :)

I'm a bit puzzled as to why DSLRs have the mirror flapping around like a lunatic when using burst frame mode? During this you can't see anything through the viewfinder anyway so why don't they set the mirror to lock up until the burst finishes??

my opinion just like this, from low-end to mid-range DSLR Nikon is the best in term of image quality, for high-end and pro DSLR Canon is the best. loyal to brand is just hilarious.

if you were going to make a movie with it then i might accept it, but for pictures id go with nikon + the camera does little things if you are still a shitty photographer, but sure go with the 1dc spray and pray for the win?

Matt Dixon true, but if you really are interested in learning photography then it's a very very good camera learning with, due to the fact it is such a fast camera, it forces you to learn and so on :)

The AF-System is built into the camera. The Lens has it's very own speed. But to take full advantage of a professional lens' focusing system, you will need a camera who can deliver the information very fast. Have tested a 70-200 on a D90 and a D800. And yes this is a difference!

I have had a look at the sample shots and I agree they are not great. I am surprised that they uploaded some of those shots. I have the 5D Mark III and my shots are sharper than the 1DX shots on the Canon site. I think they have uploaded JPEGs straight from the camera. The 5D I have produces slightly soft JPEGs but the RAW files are much sharper. I think Canon has done themselves and the 1DX a dis-service by uploading average images that don't demonstrate it's capabilities.

FYI -- There is a firmware update that allows the 1Dx (and 5D MkIII) to AF at f/8.

Its doesn't matter much, the ones who would be considering buying these camera would be professionals who have already "chosen" a system. There is no point in changing with so less in between them. Ultimately its the skill of the photographer that will get the most out of these cameras than mere specs.

It's actually not THAT much expensive. I mean, in countries where the basic salary is around 1500~2000 u$s (correct me if im wrong!), it takes only 2 months to get a monster like this. In my country, the basic salary is around $4500 (which is 500 u$s), so it takes us almost a year (because of the sellers taxes) worth of savings to get one of this.

Yeah you're right. You know better than people who have actually shot and processed files from the camera because you looked at the Jpegs Canon has on their website. The 1D-X is a brilliant camera that I have used twice (I rented it from school) and I can say that it is SLIGHTLY faster and heavier than the D4. They're both great, in some ways the 1D-X is better and others the D4. Both brands offer amazing cameras. Enjoy what you use and stop focusing so much on brand names!

Nikon all the way my man. They are just so user friendly and intuitive. And the image quality??? Put it this way...there's a reason most press photographers use Canon...the photos need to be shot in jpeg and quickly uploaded, but the image quality is only fit for black and white newspapers. Artistic photographers shoot with Nikon. Not as fast to focus or frame rate...but the images??? THE BEST!

You forgot to mention that while the Canon can shoot full 14bit raw images at 12 fps, the Nikon does not shoot the full 14bit raw files at 11 fps, but instead does at the lower 12 bit raw file until it's 9fps, 9fps and slower the Nikon will go back to 14bit raw files. Canon's 14 fps is mirror lock up, non focusing once shooting and only in jpeg. You said the Canon only has -3 to +3 EV, but that is not true, the Canon also has -5 to +5 EV. The Canon does not have a headphone port.

"The 1Dx is great, but one can not compare a Japanese Canon to a handmade German Leica." Depends on what you are looking for in a camera. If you need tracking AF at 12 fps, there is no Leica or Hasselblad that will do that for you. If you want hand crafted lenses or 40+ mp, than Leica/Hasselblad may be for you. The D1x and D4 are the pinnacle of engineering when it comes to speed; if you shoot sports, or something else needing the best speed possible, there is basically nothing better.

You can keep thinking one brand is superior in every way to the other, I'm going to keep using both as well as cameras from other manufacturers to take advantage of each's different strengths. I think this is very objective. Everybody has a different taste when it comes to design. Personally I don't like the design of Leica at all while I know people who just love it.

I could be me, but why does the mirror need to flip in between frames? I would think it's enough to just open&close the shutter and leave the mirror folded up during burst?

Hi Matt! Just wondering, I noticed that you have several camera bodies. For someone like me, if i had a 1dx i probably wouldn't want to leave it at home for... say a 7d. (Due to it being inferior - regardless of price and what not) What roles do your cameras have? Is your D4 for pro shoots and D800 for personal/general use? Great Vid btw!

Is there any real practical needs for 14fps? Sounds cool, but it would seem like you would end up with a lot of uneeded shots to sort through.

Matt , one question .. spending nearly $6k on a d4 , is only for the low noise at high iso and the rapid fire ? or is there other qualities that are worth spending that much money for it ? ause I'm puzzled between getting a d4 or a d600

hi Matt, I am looking forward to your reviews on this channel, and photokina, but if you haven't already, check out this review, I think it is what a comparison review should be like ( CANON 1DX VS NIKON D4 ) by romybross so do you think the 5D3 auto focus works as good as the 1DX ? and does the D800 focus system work as good as the D4 ? are they the same ? I would like to see a video just on getting the most out of the focus system, there are many options that I haven't explored yet on 5D3

I have the 1Dx but it seem to have problems with the AF under low light situations and cannot lock on focus no matter what. Have you experienced this issue? Thanks.

I was just about to move from canon over nikon but now i think im going to stay with canon . Im using 7D with the best canon zoom lenses , so for me this is going to be a huge jump . Thanks Matt for the review i subscribed your channel ;)

You can't really say Matt is being inaccurate. It's not like there is a standards body that says camera X is better engineered than camera Y. Yes some people are of the opinion that Leica is better engineered than Canon/Nikon - but there are also a lot of people who feel the other way. Especially professional photographers' who need the speed of a 1Dx or D4. He's not getting the specs wrong; that would be bad. He's just expressing an opinion; there is nothing wrong with that.

I beg to differ. The 70-200L IS II is a beast at quality and speed. I'll agree though, I do enjoy the image from a Nikon 200 f/2. And specs wise, the canon is superior. Plus.. Nikon glass far superior? Having fun with your 24-70 while the Canon Mark II is regarded as even sharper than the 70-200 IS II? But you can't say one is superior. Each has their advantages, and each- their disadvantages.

You're totally right. One good shot a day is better than 14 frames per second! And BTW: My GoPro does 60 fps ;)

The D4 is a very good camera and has some great touches but it doesn't feel as if Nikon have pushed the boat out with with camera. The AF system is a particular disappointment in certain ways, It is very good but doesn't feel significantly better than the D3s. Canon though have gone out all guns blazing and the 1DX looks amazing. The new AF system is amazing from what I have seen and the shooting speed, makes the camera a natural choice, for news and sports photographers.

there both great camera but i'll have to stick to my nikon gear i still just hate the way canon lays out there controls just never felt natural to myself .but in saying that canon sure have been delivering more cameras that would suit my needs better .lets hope the d600 fixes that .

I see you've GOT IT!! You're right. The Canon 1Dx produce pictures which can be printed just on newspapers(mostly halftone process). The image quality of the Canon 1Dx is objectively POOR. The majority of users is not always right. For example, most people use Microsoft Windows. But the system of APPLE is objectively better than any Microsoft Windows. Many photographers choose Canon because they are more commercial and are not interested in quality. Increase in quantity = decrease in quality!

But nikon develop the software for the sensor to be used. Sony and Nikon develop the sensor together to save cost. Sony uses the same sensor as Nikon but the DxO mark isn't as good as nikon because there software that processes the image isn't as good as nikon

As for the 70-200s, go look up some reviews on Dpreview and photozone and see that the Canon is usually rated either on par with the Nikon or slightly better. Just like most photographic equipment, the brand matters a lot fucking less than doing your homework and it trying out to see which is better. Now stop talking to people like you're superior in every way and maybe you'll be able to put together a cohesive response.
