Tony Northrup previews the Canon 1DX Mk III (sdp.io/1dx3), Canon’s 20 megapixel, full-frame DSLR for professional sports, wedding, portrait, and wildlife photographers. It has up to 20 FPS, 5.5K video, 4k/60 video, and EVERY other feature Canon could possibly come up with… but it has some serious weaknesses, too, and you still might be happier buying the Sony a9.

Australia's largest media organisation just auctioned off all its DSLRs and moved to Sony APS-C kit instead. It started when news photographers were saying they were sick of lugging all that heavy big gear around and started leasing their own Sony a6400's. Now the default is an a6600 with the 16-55 f2.8. One other body with a longer zoom optional. Also they put a 30mb file size limit on uploads. They have stock presets uploaded and now they send jpegs via wifi to their iPhone 11 which acts a as a spare camera, and sends them direct to the news server over the 4G network. 5G will make it almost instantaneous. Videos are 1080p/60, max 10 minutes, to keep the file sizes manageable. Its all about carrying less kit, eliminating old school processing workflow and making photographers much more mobile.

Very interesting. I've seen at least a couple general assignment Chicago news photographers on staff at one of the papers and they don't carry the 1DX models. Don't blame them. Just not necessary for ordinary reportage. 5DMark-whatevers, if I recall, and only one had a battery/vertical grip.

I hate when reviewers downplay certain features because they don’t see the use for it themselves. Sure, raw video is nothing to the casual shooter, but for filmmakers, it’s a game changer.

It sounds like this camera will require a gimbal on a large tripod or, at least, a large tall monopod for video or mirrorless mode work. Maybe a cloth shroud, pulled back from the camera and covering the photographers heed and shoulders, could be used to professionalize the arms-length viewing stance imposed by the fixed rear screen and lack of a combo dual-mode OVF/EVF.

I don't get why the mechanical shutter doesn't produce banding and rolling shutter artefacts at 1/4000th or 1/8000th of a second. The two curtains only reveal the whole sensor up to around 1/250th of a second shutter speed. Beyond that the second curtain will begin to cover up the sensor before the first curtain has opened up fully. And at 1/8000th only a thin slit between the two curtains move across the sensor which results in a difference of time between exposure on the bottom part of the sensor and the top part of the sensor.

subwarpspeed by Canon of course. When provided with preproduction equipment you sign an agreement on what you can and can’t talk about. Tony made that clear in his video. The fact he mentioned it and the way in which he mentioned it and the fact he STRONGLY advised people to wait for real review suggests, to me at least, there was a major issue that he was not permitted to talk about. He also talked about frames per second many times. I wondered if it is something with that or focus accuracy or not supporting certain focusing during burst.

@GiTr14
@GiTr14 4 года назад
Thanks Tony, it is just not clear the reason you mentioned the mechanical shutter will completely avoid the rolling shutter effect. When using a mechanical shutter with speeds lower than the flash X sync speed that for the 1DX MIII is 1/250s, the sensor will be completely exposed as the case of an electronic shutter. For speeds higher than the flash X sync speed as the shutter is built out of two curtains and in those faster speeds they can't move fast enough, at no point the entire sensor is completely exposed. As the second curtain starts moving before the first curtain is finished the exposure occurs as a "line" of exposed sensor and could produce the rolling shutter effect as well. So why it is completely avoid with a mechanical shutter and could be an issue with an electronic shutter?
@boldimagery
@boldimagery 4 года назад
I get banding on cameras with mechanical shutter all the time shooting sports. Depending on the lights will depend at what shutter speed. If the lights are cheap 1/250th and up I get it. We are talking about the banding seen because of the light’s flicker right?

Thanks Tony, great first look at it. To me, thanks to a previous video in another channel, the camera looked like same as before but a bit better for sports but not much. The issue with Sony is that is giving up with Canikon (as Pentax, etc....) with bringing lenses to events as Canon and Nikon do. Maybe the day Sony do the same an borrow lenses to pros then the real change/switch will happen. I dont see it happening before.

Appreciate your frank discussion and advice. I may be thinking about this camera differently than most. I am looking at it as enhancing the ability to get good video without an operator whether the operator is on a second actual video camera or I am doing something on my own that day. 1DX Mark III has eye detection in addition to face detection in live view. My impression is the autofocus is significantly enhanced rather than just a tweak. As you said nobody really complains about the AF on the Mark II but I think there is significant improvement in AF which speaks to just how good it probably is. Not just new tech but many more focus points and much faster processing of AF which should result in a higher hit-rate of in-focus shots and less hunting in video mode. My thought is on a tripod for one-person shooting you could probably have really shallow depth-of-field and not have the camera hunting for focus. Not only that but since it has the so-called "deep learning" tech if you wanted to turn away from the camera and look at something while talking presenting a side profile or even with back to camera the system will continue to track your head rather than refocusing on something. You can also adjust more parameters in how the focus behaves. I believe the eye tracking and recognition of human (head rather than just face) is available in live view photo and video modes - maybe limited to crop modes for 4k 60? Am I missing something or will the Mark III be significantly better to set on a tripod and move into field of view for one-person production than any other Canon camera? That is kind of how I am looking at it - much better "unattended" shooting. Put an Atomos monitor on the hot shoe facing you and let the camera worry about focus. Record 4K 60 to Atomos to get around expensive CFexpress cards. I think it also gets around the 30 minute limitation. So am I looking at this wrong? Wouldn't the 1DX Mark III be the ultimate single-camera tripod setup for someone who wants to record themselves without a camera person?

Well I was also hoping there would be IBIS, but then again, who needs IBIS for a camera that is designed to be used with monopods? I mean yes it sounds appealing and all, but for the real professionals what does it account for? If you shoot in dark, you typically use flashes or other means to light up the subject, IBIS wont save you and you cant write off everything on it... If you shoot sports all day, IBIS wont save your hands from the weight of the setup but the monopod is a must... If you shoot landscapes, tripod is a must... So really what does the IBIS account to? only casual photographers and those wont really bother with this kind of setup... They will buy cheaper options and those will contain IBIS it seems...

Hello Tony, Any thoughts on high ISO performance between 1DX Makii vs Mkiii? Does Sony have better high ISO performance compared to canon 1DXMkii particularly interested in Sony a7R4
@loudandclearmedia
@loudandclearmedia 4 года назад
A7III has better high ISO performance, but the A7R4 has the worst high ISO performance of the current Sony cameras. The pixel density is too high. Though, people don't buy 61MP cameras typically to shoot high ISO....and people don't buy 20MP cameras to shoot architecture and landscape, so different tools. I own A7III, A7Riii, and A7R4. I shoot architecture professionally, and for that the A7R4 is a dream. Get it anywhere over ~ISO 320 though and it's noisy...over ISO 1600, forget about it.

Riyaz Ahmed I’d take the A9 over both of those, with the 1DX2 a close second. The Sony R bodies work best when stabilized. Having said that, as long as you have enough light to keep your shutter speed high enough, both of the Sony R bodies will take much more detailed images.

Tony - Thanks for your initial comments on this camera. As you proceed to a more hands on, field test type review, one thing I am most interested to learn more about is how dual pixel focus tracking (using as mirrorless camera) on this camera compares to the phase detection (using as DSLR) for fast moving subjects (primarily mammals and birds in flight). I have searched the reviews on the internet and there is no attempt to compare the two, under any circumstances. To me, this comparison answers question that potential buyers of this camera might have and will also suggest where Canon is headed in the future. Focus tracking is a key performance aspect and for many photographers.......until dual pixel at least equals phase detection for speed and accuracy they will not purchase a mirrorless camera. Thanks Ron

Looking at the live view performance of actual production Mark 3 cameras, it is easily as good as the Sony and can track football players and fast moving subjects without any problems, although I do agree with your comment that holding a dslr out in front while looking at the rear screen is really difficult especially with say a 300 f2.8 or larger lens.

I'm only a serious hobbyist, nowhere near a professional, and this camera is clearly more than I would ever need (I've had all sorts of good results with my EOS 300D, 20D, and 7D). I totally appreciate your candor and objectivity about the Mark III. But you know what? I'm turning 60 in a few days, and this was my present to myself, and I have a pretty clear conscience about that! Really looking forward to working with this thing!

Good video, you are right about deciding not to do previews anymore if you can't the show camera results. I suppose many youtube channels are more than willing to have a scoop of a new camera preview, but these previews are just a trick by manufacturers to attract customers if you are not allowed to criticise the camera.

Thank you Tony/Chelsea. Your comments on pre-production reviews makes so much sense. I have a question on IBIS in general... logically (which I’ll admit may be flawed...), it seems like it would be better if the image showed up at the sensor stabilized (lens IS) vs having the camera trying to both stabilize and perform AF. I get all the reasons why IBIS could be a benefit, specifically with lenses with no IS, but what is the better design? IS helps AF, but should the process be serial or parallel? Thank you!!!

For this kind of gear IBIS is not needed, because all the pros will use this camera either with external stabilization or tripods monopods... IBIS only helps for casual photographers and those wont buy this expensive camera.

I think the 16fps may be a little more than theoretical... From the Canon white paper: "One specific improvement in AF system speed is that the rate of separate AF detections during AI Servo AF shooting is significantly faster in the Mark III camera. In other words, in the brief fraction of a second between shots at up to 16 fps, when the mirror is in its down position, the AF system performs more sampling operations, more separate AF readings."

I would disagree on the nature of reviews. almost any manufacturer will make claims about performance; not just for cameras, but for any manufactured item. A reviewer has the opportunity to affirm the good features, draw attention to significant features(both good and bad) and offer up criticism of features. You really need to summarize all of those things to offer up a complete review.

The advantages of this camera over the Sony mirrorless counterparts are obvious (listed in order or importance): - a built-in GPS chip (in My opinion, its most important strength) - S-raw, M-raw - Heif codec - Illuminated buttons - Unlimited cache (but the cards cost an arm and a leg at this point) - Some video features missing in the Sonies - Direct compatibility with somewhat more affordable, but still quality EF lenses. But (much as I want a GPS in Sony mirrorless bodies, support for S-raw, M-raw, XS-raw, as well as Heif), the Sonies (both the Sonies handily beat the Canon on most counts): - Much smaller and lighter - Mirrorless (i.e., an electronic viewfinder, no redundant parts (such as a mirror and a pentaprism) in there, etc.) - Quite a bit more affordable (though still rather expensive) than the ridiculously expensive pro-grade Canons. - Considerably higher resolution sensor in the case of the A7r -series and somewhat higher resolution in the A & A9 II. - Much more visually appealing than any DSLR. At any rate, Canon deserves some credit for equipping [some or] their cameras with GPS chips and for support for S-raw, M-raw and now - also HEIF.

Overall, I am very impressed by the 1DX Mark III specifications, and I look forward to seeing how it handles the world. The new video options are enticing and befitting of a $6500 camera. The new battery life ratings on the same batteries from the 1DX Mark II seem almost too good to be true. One of the fair disappointments that I think deserves to be leveled at the 1DX is the lack of a resolution increase. 24 MP was really where I think the standard for these sorts of cameras ought to be. The gigabit ethernet could also have used an upgrade to maybe 4 Gbps since this camera has boasted gigabit ethernet for 3 generations now. Conspicuously missing is the hybrid viewfinder given how much this camera is unleashed in live view mode.

they didn't raised the MP in order to avoid self canibalization to the R and RS cameras, although it was more than plausible to have a camera with more MP for them. Also it is useful for photographist working live and it is also more suitable for multiples shots (around 40-50 pics in a row)
