Canon 24mm f2.8 EF | First impressions in Seoul, Korea

On a recent holiday trip I picked up a Canon EOS 630 with a wideangle 24mm lens. This vintage lens was released in 1988 and is made out of 10 elements in 10 groups. As you can see, there is no manual aperture setting on this lens. You can change the aperture when it's attached to a working Canon camera, but since I'm using this lens with a basic K&F adapter on a Sony A7iii I couldn't change the aperture. So everything you see in this video is shot wide open at f2.8. Don't expect anything fancy, these are all just test-shots to see what this lens is capable of.
After using it I have some mixed feelings about this lens, what do you think?

RU-vid compression aside, that footage is amazing having been shot wide open. Many of the Canon lenses from that time were very good optically, but you could never fall in love with the housing that surrounds the glass - the focusing rings are unpleasant, and they only get worse with use as the plastic rubs together. I'm sure it would be relatively easy to set the aperture in a specific position in a non destructive way - I'll have to have a look at one of my brother's lenses, he's got a box full of Canon stuff from that period. Or there might be adapters that have an aperture ring built into them. Are you planning to keep that one or did you get it just out of curiosity?

Hi Tim, considering it has been shot wide open the image quality is not bad indeed. I've read that if I set the lens at a certain aperture with the EOS camera, I can then detach it and use it on my Sony at the set aperture. Still that seems to be quite a hassle and I don't really like the housing and focus ring. I will keep the lens, but I will probably not use it often.

The canon zoom 20-35L 2.8 is a great lens if you can find it. Supposed to be one of the sharpest canon wide angle zooms, and sharper than the 20, 24 and (I think 28mm). It is great, true L-quality, all metall build (except for the focus and zoom rings that is). Of course three times the weight, but still very compact!

That lens looks small and lightwighted. Must be easy to carry around. Its optics also seems to be fantastic. I truly enjoyed watching it.
