Comparing the Canon 6D with the old school A2 Film camera.
The A2 is a 35mm EF mount film camera made by Canon that hit shelves in 1992. I was shooting on Kodak Gold 200.

Thanks for taking the time to do a really specific A-B test (very similar cameras, same lenses, settings). To my eye the color, saturation and tone of the A2/Kodak 200 slightly beats the 6D/Digital (especially with no processing on the digital). The grain can be a bit distracting for the film shots -- and essentially non-existent for the digital, but hey, film is grainy. Had a few questions about the film though -- did you use a commercial lab to process it? Did the lab scan it or did you? What resolution (not DPI, but # of pixels vertical by # pixels horizontal) were the negative scans? Thanks again!

Interesting to see side by side shots like that. Both really are great quality. I preferred the film look more for most of the comparisons. But you really cant beat digital for convenience. If I were a professional photographer I would use digital like 95% of the time and then really just use film for an add on or for my own personal projects. I’ve seen a wedding photographer use a small film camera to take some sneaky candid shots and they cane out great.

The film certainly has a unique look. Much warmer, more contrasty and more saturated colours. What is striking is how in the backlit photos the 6D has almost universally blown highlights, while the film has done a good job of retaining highlight detail, and this 200 Gold, is just a consumer grade colour film.

I would suggest to shoot a proper professional 35mm film stock like the Protra or EPP100 to compare. I love my 6D, and it's the only digital camera I've fallen in love with. HOWEVER, it doesn't hold a candle to my Canon Elan 7e with EPP100 or Portra film.

Keeping the same settings is not the smartest move. Film does it's magic while overexposed by 1-2 steps, while in digital it's always better to underexpose and push shadows in post. Anyway, nice comparison!

Seeing the film shots, I wonder why not use a roll of kodak Porta instead, as Porta is usually known as a more... "neutral" balanced film, whereas consumer filmstock like gold, has a slightly more... Sensitivity in the red spectrum; even though it comes out very overblown on here, from what I personally judge, with being at 4:56 (edit; I shoot film with myself; because digital camera's usually leave me with a battery and a storage problem, that I just... Can't seem to overcome)
@forsterl.stewart414
@forsterl.stewart414 4 года назад
Film has a depth that digital can't match. You should see a 6x7cm positive thru a 10x loupe. You all would be amazed. Film has 3 layers of color plus the emulsion base on top of the film and that's why it has a 3d appearance and looks so much sharper. And back in the day we used kadachrome 25 in 35mm slow asa of 25 had such fine grain and colors so close to life was a beautiful time to be alive and be a photographer. Not that I'm not happy today with my 50 megapixels or 14 frames per second cameras today. Just miss the film of yesteryear.

Just a tip when shooting film, over expose it! I recommend at least one stop, but 2 stops won’t hurt. Over exposing will help to get cleaner images that have more color and vibrance. Ex: if you have 200 speed film, set the iso dial on the camera to 100 or 50, same goes for 400 speed film, set the dial to 200 or 100
@MichaelCGraef

@ReinoldFZ

With Kodak Gold, the consumer film he used, I would not recommend to over expose; the shadows get shifts in the colors and the highlights are slightly harsh. With professional films actually with fuji ProH is good to overexpose but with Extar 100 in my experience is better using at its recommended exposure.

@ProjectOverseer
@ProjectOverseer 5 лет назад
I don't understand. All those differences can be achieved in post ... Even film (grade) colour can be change with type of film being used and techniques in the dark room - including papers used. I spent years doing the film thing ... Digital is vastly more flexible and has greater resolution and colour depth if the right camera/lenses are being used. I won't mention broadcast quality video, but we're talking stills here.
@robiulahmed
@robiulahmed 5 лет назад
True, but to truly emulate film takes a lot of time and most people can't do it. Film presets don't quite capture the look, either, although they do give a "generic film" look. What I mean is that if you shot on portra and you compared it to a digital file with a portra film preset, they'll look different. The other part of the argument is why make digital look like film at all? If you want the film look, shoot film and if you want a digital look, shoot digital.

@reneefariasphoto40
@reneefariasphoto40 4 года назад
IMO the photo images were not captured correctly. Depending on the film stock, the film should have been overexposed 1/3 to 1 full stop in order to let light in properly. Film has always been light hungry. Or it needs a fill-flash, which means it's light hungry. The composition is great. Nice scenes for sure. But this is not a true digital to film comparison because the film stock needs to be the correct film stock for what you intend to capture and needs to be captured properly and is highly dependent on the scanner and technician as well. Not all technicians are created alike. With that said, I feel that digital did a better job based on the film used and producers' choice of settings. We also do not know what the digital camera settings were and these were identical to the film camera. Although I am a Nikon shooter and have been for 24 years both film and digital and a Mamiya/Phasone shooter in film and digital, I believe and really like the Canon 6D and 6D ii both great cameras and do a blazing good job in the hands of a good photographer. Personally, when I shoot 120 film, I use Kodak Portra and when I shoot in 35mm I use Kodak ColorPlus 200. All films I overexpose and turn out fantastic. Many samples of both film and digital on my website, especially in my swimwear portfolio but no one can tell film or digital. LOL, www.reneefarias.com/swimwear I love digital but will always shoot film also... :)

6d wins here because you didn’t use portra 400 which would have been way more comparable. Just didn’t like the skin tones on Kodak gold (Kodak gold needs a bright sunny day little tip) if not it’s very blah. Also 6d is a fucking brilliant camera with skin tones one of canons best.
