This is another addition to my EOS film camera videos. This time I talk about my Canon EOS A2e film camera. This is a great camera with lots to love about it. This camera is capable of covering all of your film photography needs. Pair this with a nifty-fifty or your favorite EOS lens and you'll have a fantastic film camera setup. (This video discuss the EOS A2 and EOS 5 as they are similar to the A2e)
To browse for this camera or other cameras like it visit UsedPhotoPro.com through my affiliate link and save 5% on your order- www.jdoqocy.com/click-9039196-...
Here are 2 great starter lenses for your EOS film camera setup. You'll be good with either choice. The 50mm is usually more affordable, has a 1.8 aperture and renders awesome images. The 40mm is super sharp and compact but doesn't open as wide and usually costs more. You can't go wrong with either. ( These are affiliate links)

I still have this camera, or to be exact the EOS 5. Bought it new in the store. However these days I couldn't get even $5 for it - I've changed the shutter on that camera. An FILM camera!!! That's over 4000 rolls of film that was exposed in this camera alone. I've fixed lens release button several times, the door knob fell apart so I can only close the camera with the duct tape, several other buttons are kinda lazy etc etc. But to be fair, that camera went with me thru 3 wars and 3 continents, so it's a pure miracle that it still holds together; a testament to the build quality despite its somewhat plasticky appearance... By the way, if I remember correctly, that exposure scale thing happened due to some weird patent issue in the US, but Canon was pushed with the release date, so they opted for the US camera variant that's slightly different than the version sold in the rest of the world.
@CraigBergonzoni

That’s amazing that your camera has been through all of that! You’re right about the patent issue. I vaguely knew about it but completely blanked about that issue when I made this video. This is a camera that has really grown on me. I honestly didn’t expect to like it so much.

I bought this in high school and travelled for 15 years with it before I finally went digital with a T3i. I loved the eye control and the DOF preview that came with it, would love to have that on my RP! If I could get a good digital back for it, I would bring it out of storage immediately. So easy to use, fast handling, and never had an issue with build quality. Thanks for the review and a little nostalgia for me!y

That is so cool you used it for that long! Canon would sell a ton of cameras if they could design some mirrorless cameras that are throwback style like some of these great film cameras. Take a page from Fuji and Nikon in a way. Thank you for watching and sharing your experience with this camera!

The exposure scale was patented in USA and Canon didn't want to pay license fees so it was disabled in the A2 and A2E. (Canon did similar things with motorised flash in some models like the EOS 10S.) The good news is that it's only disabled in software and the firmware can be changed.

This review was very helpful, and I am enjoying the series on the EOS cameras. I do have a question about the nifty fifty lens you mention. Which lens is that exactly, or does that refer to any Canon 50mm prime? Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
@CraigBergonzoni
@CraigBergonzoni 4 года назад
Hey Mike, thanks for the comment and kind words! The nifty-fifty is the 50mm f1.8 lens that is usually prices around $100-125 when brand new. There have been a couple of versions. Ironically one of my next videos is going to be about this lens. There should be a link in the description of these EOS videos to the Nifty fifty as well as the 40mm pancake lens which is another great affordable choice. Thank you for watching!

So just to be clear, there isn’t a dedicated light meter in the viewfinder like we’re used to seeing in Canon DSLRs but there is an indicator that says if you’re over or under exposed? Does the top lcd screen offer a light meter or something similar?
@CraigBergonzoni
@CraigBergonzoni 4 года назад
There's a light meter but the feedback you get is "+", "-", or "+-". What you don't see is the exposure scale feedback like you do on DSLRs or other EOS film cameras, The [-3..-2..-1..0..1..2..3] (at least in manual mode in the viewfinder or the LCD screen) It's there for other modes. I guess this was because of a patent lawsuit that was going on at the time. Anyway, this is still a great camera. I hope this helps. Let me know if you have anymore questions. Thank you for watching and commenting! It's much appreciated.

@CraigBergonzoni
@CraigBergonzoni 3 года назад
I tend to shoot in manual or aperture priority for street photography. A lot of times I want to determine the depth of field and don't mind if I get some motion blur with my street shots. Thank you for watching and commenting! Best of luck with your street photography! Let me know how it's going.

Nice review! Unless I'm getting something wrong on my EOS 5 setting auto focus to the back button does not dissable the exposure reading and exposure lock from the back button. This makes back button focusing useless for me with this camera. I've tried everything to turn the exposure metering and the exposure lock off from the back button, but it does not seem to be possible. I like having exposure reading set to the half press of the shutter button, and only auto focus set to the back button. Apart from that it's a great camera!

How does the ISO feature work? If I have Kodak portra 160 then would I use ISO in camera to expose correctly?
@CraigBergonzoni
@CraigBergonzoni 3 месяца назад
It should read the correct ISO setting for your film automatically. But if it doesn't and you need to set then you press the button on the back next to the ISO label a few times until you see the ISO info on the top screen. Once you see that then spin the dial on top next to the shutter button until you get the ISO setting you want. Once you do that you can wait for a few seconds for it to be set or press the shutter button half way.

@patchandy

Craig Bergonzoni hmmm weird. Yea the meter doesn’t work properly, and oddly enough the shutter count wasn’t advancing with that lens on it! It was an old Russian Helios lens that apparently isn’t a good fit for it!

I don't wear glasses but for people that do and need to adjust there are adapters - search for Canon -2 Diopter ED for EOS-3, A2/E. There might be other choices depending on what you need but that's an example. I hope this helps! Thank you for watching and commenting!!

It's a tough choice. They're both great. If I had to pick only one I would say the A2e. But even though I've sold off some of my EOS film cameras (I had way too many) I kept the A2e and one of the ELANs. So really you can't go wrong with either but I would say the A2e as a close 1st choice.

I started with film back in the mid 80s and shot it for a long time before moving to digital around 2009. I put film on the back burner but I dug up my Canon A2 and want to start shooting film again. At one point I owned the Canon T-90 and I loved that camera. So much so that I just ordered one from Japan along with 50mm lens. Been a long time since I manual focused so I need to get my chops together on that. Kinda surprised at the high film prices though. I'll see where my film adventures take me the second time around. Thanks for the video!

EOS A2 is a great value in terms of features. It’s not as advanced as EOS 3 but much cheaper. However, my big concern is its built quality. Leaky LCD, broken battery holder, fallen back wheel,… and it creaks if you squeeze it.

The 50mm f/1.8 and the first EF 28mm f/2.8 are 2 lenses I probably use more than any other. I've made videos on both of those if you want to check those out. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-d0j_eLB7Wbw.html and ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-8eCZ6m9PASs.html I also own the 85mm f/1.8 and 70-200mm f/4 L. I've tried a handful of lenses but much of my best work has been done with the 28mm, 50mm and 85mm. The good thing about those is that they are really affordable. I hope this gives you some ideas.
