OVERVIEW
The Canon A2e (also known as EOS 5 and A2) is a powerhouse of a film SLR that was marketed to the advanced amateur in the 1990's.
It's the world's first camera with eye controlled focus and the closely modeled A2 was used to help create the now famous bullet time effect in The Matrix.

Hi, just wanted to say thank you for putting in the hard work into making this series. I have to say you have done a superb job and the depth you go into is very much appreciated. Hi Robin, Thanks so much for the compliments, I really appreciate it. :) This came at a really great time. I have a Minolta 7000 that I was going to use a few months back but has been giving me issues, so I put it on hold. I'm going to buy and announce a new PO Box this week, because I'd had a few offers like this now, and recently. Keep an eye out for that announcement. :) Again, thanks so much, that's a really amazing offer.

Thanks for this review, it has helped me decide and I am getting one. The main reason being, it offers spot metering which I noticed the Canon AF cameras that I do have, do not offer this option. I have an EOS 620 and EOS 55. I have tried the eye control feature, it's so amazingly accurate.

Good video, I guess it was a lot of work. Normaly I shoot 6x6 then last week I was stumbel over this camera offered for about $20. I thought that was a good opportunity to use the lenses of my DSLR. I already shot the first roll and it's fascinating - every single frame was exposed perfectly.

Great video, I love my A2E with the VG10 grip! One thing you should've mentioned in the segment about buying a used A2/A2E is to watch out cameras with a broken command dial that spins freely. This was a common problem on the A2/A2E and the Elan models, a Google search will bring up tons of info on the subject.

Have had both the A2 and a couple of EOS 5's. With the VG-10 grip, this camera fit in my hand better than any SLR or DSLR I have had however, you HAVE to mention that these cameras were very well known for having the command dial (on top of the camera) break. A lot of people never had a problem, but a lot of people did. I was ALWAYS careful to press the center button when rotating the command dial, and despite this, just had my first one break on me this weekend. Beautiful camera, but unless you're buying from a very reputable shop who can assure you the command dial has been fixed, I think you're (a prospective buyer) better off with a Nikon F 4 if you're starting from scratch or an EOS 1N if you already have full frame Canon glass.

Thank you for pronouncing EOS the correct way. It seems that a lot of ' reviewers ' in the US and Canada have difficulty pronouncing EOS, calling it E.O.S, which really gets on nerves. In Greek mythology EOS was the goddess of dawn, as Helios was the Sun god. BTW, I just bought one of these ancient cameras, to use my Canon L lenses on film. Thank you again.

I've got a EOS 5, EOS 3 and an EOS 1n from the old school EF bodies. I think the 5 is my favourite because it's so light and the shutter/mirror sound is really nice. My one gripe is you adjust in half stops, not third stops like most modern cameras. The 3 and 1 allow thirds stops. Metering is accurate (B&W film isn't that picky about exposure anyway) and auto focus seems pretty good as well. I remember listing over this camera as a teenager in the 90s and now I have one. It's rad.

Just bought one on eBay with a 28-80 lens for £50 and a 5 pack of 36 exposures for £28. So for less than a meal for 2 with wine I have a great companion to my 5DII and 5DIII, and one that will teach me to take my time and think about composition. Thank you, this is by far the best video I've seen on this camera.
@AzrielKnight
@AzrielKnight 7 лет назад
Thanks Mark! Hey, seeing as how you own a mark II and a mark III, any thoughts on their differences?
@markharris5771
@markharris5771 7 лет назад
Azriel Knight when I said "just bought", I mean I instantly looked at your video as soon as I won the item. I'll get back to you as soon as I've used it, I'm hoping it will be as good as it looked. This has actually got me more excited than I was when I upgraded to the III and I can't see myself going for the IV.
@AzrielKnight
@AzrielKnight 7 лет назад
Sorry I should have been more clear. I'm wondering your thoughts on the difference between the mark ii and mark iii, not the difference between those and the a2e. I'm still rocking a mark ii and sold my mark i awhile ago.
@markharris5771
@markharris5771 7 лет назад
The biggest differences are the speed of the AF and the focal points, and the 5DIII has the same two card slots as the 7DII. Most of all I rarely take the 5DII above ISO 800 which is nothing to the 5DIII. The difference in shutter speed has no impact on me as use the 7DII for any burst beyond bracketing. But, and this is hard to describe, the 5DIII is soulless, wherever possible I will use the 5DII but unfortunately my USB male connector on the camera isn't working anymore so can't work tethered with it. I don't video and have no interest in starting so I can't comment on either the actual videoing or the audio. It may be because it was my first full frame, but I think the 5DII was/is such a special camera and I think it's place in history is set and I don't think I will part with mine, in fact keep meaning to take it in for repair and servicing.
@AzrielKnight
@AzrielKnight 7 лет назад
In other words, the mark III has some bells and whistles but no groove?

I used to own the A2e. I loved the eye controlled focus and yes since the advent of digital I have been wondering why that feature has not been implemented in any camera since. I t would seem to be a no brainer, and way more advanced than the tap to focus that is starting to be seen on current touch screen cameras. Alas I sold the camera for a Nikon FM2. Not regretting the decision but when I go back and scan the images off the old A2e I'm surprised at how sharp the images were. I just wanted a simpler machine at the time.

Hello again, I'm enjoying using my EOS 5 so far, it's so easy to use and my pictures came out just the way I wanted it. I would just like to ask what type of flash I can attach to the hot shoe, and also whether I can use a trigger or cable to use an off-camera flash. Thanks so much for your reply.
@eoslensman
@eoslensman 4 года назад
Any EZ flashguns will work automatically but with less features than the 430EZ so I recommend you get a 430 EZ. It is the dedicated gun for this camera and there are many custom features. Use a Canon off camera shoe cord to maintain complete dedication with the camera. That being said, any simple flash will do as long as it's not meant for dedication on other brands like Nikon but you will need to perform some manual calculations for aperture/distance. One of the coolest features of the 5 is the focus assist light which actually projects a grid of red lines and this helps AF much better than the later "torch bulb" lights such as used on the D60 (of which I also have). The 430 EZ also has an AF assist light on it but you can disable it if you wish. One of the custom functions on the camera is the ability to automatically select 1/200s when the camera is used in Av mode and the flash attains the ready status. This is using a Canon flashgun.

Great camera, use it for events and weddings alongside the eos 3 although have mostly been running a RB67 instead. I prefer it to the "better" eos 3 simply because of ease of use and ergonomics - on the 5 I can change modes and settings without having to take my eye away from the finder as opposed to the eos 3 where you have to press the awkward recessed buttons. Mine got dropped in a bag with the 3 and the build quality is a concern as the 5 is taped up at the bottom and covered with the VG10 whereas the 3 merely got a scratch.

The 90's were the real space age. Selecting one of your million focus point by hand and not by eye is state-of-the-art-technology nowadays. What have went wrong?!

Good question Peter. Maybe they got worried about shooting lazers in our eyes? ;)
@daktarioskarvannederhosen2568
@@AzrielKnight does this camera in fact use something like that for its eye-control focussing?

I got two for just over 20 bucks each, but one of them has a broken door, and they didn't come with batteries so I'm not sure if they work, but if they don't I got Two so hey free spare parts.

Azriel Knight I just got the batteries and they both work. Now I just have to go out with some film and test them, but so far everything is looking good! (≧∇≦)

You have some cool videos. Just got this camera. I did have a question, in manual mode, I can change the shutter speed but can't seem to figure out how to change the aperture. If you happen to know, would you mind sharing it? Thanks
@AzrielKnight
@AzrielKnight 8 лет назад
Oh yeah, that's a pain sometimes, there's a little I/O switch next to the dial on the back, switch that on and your back dial should now adjust aperture.

Awesome! It workes. I was trying it without the lens in first and then I realized that I need to have the lens in and then it started going. Thanks!!!

NP, I get why they have a lock for the dial, so your body doesn't adjust your settings while you walk, but it's a little counter intuitive. That dial will now also be your exposure compensation in TV and AV, half press the shutter and then adjust, you'll see your light meter hash mark move.

I had one for about six months. At first I was amazed at all the technology, while it worked. The eye controlled focusing was very hit-and-miss so I just stopped using it. The build quality was awful. The plastic felt like it was going to disintegrate at any moment. Swapped it for an old Olympus 0m2n which I've still got and still use.

Thanks for the comment Paul. Yeah there is def some cameras where plastic didn't work out. Maybe you got a dud though 'cuz I've always found the EOS 5 to be pretty solid.
