I worked in a camera repair shop at the time. We had a lot of great support from Canon as far as repair information and tools. We saw very few actually come in for Service. The 50mm 1.8 lens however was another story. We had a lot come in for oiling diaphragm blades. It was a good picture taker but it also had some very good competition.
I have had the all black version for about 7 years now. Though I don't use it as much as I use to I cant push myself to get rid of it, its such a great camera.
I have the Minolta XD7 (just a European market XD11) and I'm very happy with it. All the controls are very intuitive and exactly where I want them, the viewfinder is wonderful and tells you your shutter speed, aperture and which shutter speed the metre thinks is best. Minolta lenses are also very inexpensive, so that's a plus. I think there's an issue with my metre because compared to the one on my phone it seems to think the ISO is a stop higher than I set it to, so I must compensate with +1 on the exposure compensation dial. Despite that issue, it's fun to shoot with and exactly what I want from an SLR.
Yeah I love how the settings all pop up in the viewfinder!! It makes it so much more natural to use. Huh, my XD11 doesn’t seem to have the same ISO problem (tested against my Fuji x-t2) but I wonder if there can be some discrepancy as they get older
@@iso25 Mine didn't have the issue at first either, but one time after reloading, it seemed like the batteries were dead (only O-speed working, no metre reading). Since I didn't have any batteries on me I just removed them and put them back in, yk the magic of turning things off and on again. After that, everything worked again, except for the skewed metre. Maybe the batteries are at fault, or it's wonky 80's electronics. Haven't gotten around to buying the necessary batteries since then so I haven't tested. I just hope it doesn't get any worse haha
Sadly no, it will just disregard your set aperture and act as if you were still in program mode by setting its own shutter speed and aperture (which it actually physically will not be able to take the lens to) independently. Thus your exposure won’t be accurate. That being said I’ve heard a work around is possible by holding the DoF preview switch in and then setting whatever aperture you like. I’ve never tested it myself so I don’t know if it works but you could definitely give it a shot.
@@iso25 thanks for the reply. I’ve read that too and wondered what your opinion was on that, so thank you. I’ve been really scratching my head on that technique, so I’m actually going to test this today.
Canon A-1 is a better camera, and yes the AE-1 is way, way overpriced for what it is. You can buy an Olympus OM-2S Program that has better metering (Spot and Off-the-film) and a phenomenal Zuiko glass for 1/3 of what AE-1 is sold for. For the record I own an A-1, an FTb and a Canonet QL25. Canon non-L series glass is on par with Zuiko and Hexanons, or Rokkors. People are dumb for paying over $100 for AE-1.
