this is fantastic news as I already have this lens ordered & there is no other wide option for my needs, Christopher you honestly do the best reviews ever, I don't know how many products I've purchased based on your exceptional reviews, many thanks
agree... my wife has all the ef-m lenses except for the 18-55 and 18-150... and the 11-22 and the 28 macro are the most sharps and fun lenses of the system...
Lucky lady. Can you please advise whether she thinks it is worth it to get the 11-22mm when you already have the 15-45mm? For the full frame equivalent 18-24mm range is there a third party prime that can do a good job? Thanks
If u watch his other review on the 10mm i am leaning against the extra weight size and chromatic aberrations in the corners. The 11 adds more vignetting and about $100 usd more. It's a tough call. I have the M6mii as well.
Hi Christopher. Thanks for your detailed review of this lens. You rate it very highly, but in comparison to what? I own this lens for my Canon M50, and I am considering buying the RF 14-35mm F/4L lens for my new Canon R6. Do you have an opinion as to whether it would be worth it to buy the RF 14-35 lens, or would I need to go to the RF 16-35 F/2.8L to see a noticeable difference? Thanks in advance.
The worst part about Canon's EOS M system is that all the lenses they make (except the kit ones) are no brainers! The selection isn't the greatest, but the ones that are there are amazing!
It's better than my 16-35 f2.8 lens. The big benefit of mirrorless is the ability to have smaller wideangle lenses because of the shorter distance from rear of lens to sensor.
Chris, nice video as always. This lens only could be justificated by their size and/or weight. Otherwise, i think 10-18 STM + EF/EFS adapter could make equal job by half-price. Congrats.
Thank for the lens review. Between the 11-22mm and the 10-18mm which has less chromatic aberration. I’ve watch both of your videos reviews and it seems the 10-18mm. I have the 10-18 with adapter trying to learn real estate photography but the chromatic aberration around windows is tearable. So would the 11-16 be better. Thanks in advance
Before I ask my question, I'll preface by saying when it comes to photography, I'm a complete novice. I just got the Canon EOS M50 Mark II with the EF-M15-45mm + EF-M 55-200mm lenses. Can someone please tell me what this lens would do for me that those lenses won't? Thank you in advance!
So "camera correcting for vignetting" mean the test was done with auto-corrections on? So that may be the reason that no chromatic aberrations are visible in the frame. If that is the case it wouldn't justify lens performance as people might intend to use it with video or even RAW video filming.
Just go straight for the 11-20mm, I hate having to use adaptors. Rumor has it that Canon might be working on a new ultra wide angle EF-M lens, actually, so it might be worth waiting a little while
I'm about to purchase this 11-22mm and ita 2023 I want a nice wide angle lense for astro so it's between this lense and the rokinon samyang 12mm I like the canon cuz its more usable in other places other then just wide angle astro
It's been around some time now, but an indispensable part of my M kit which heads out for walks and hikes (The bigger, heavier equipment has to wait at home.)
I just got the EFS 55-250 STM with an adapter. It's a very highly reviewed lens here and it has a little bit more reach than the mirrorless counterpart.
i went in to the M system solely for this lens and the 22mmF2...i think if you look you will find on APS-c this lens has the edge on the £2500 Canon 11-24 F4L at the long end both on APS-c of course...
I love how small the efm series lenses are I hate that I can't take them to other cameras and I'll have to rebuy lenses when I step up to stay the r7 witch is the next camera I want I do have some ef lenses and I've been trying to buy more ef lenses cuz there's many and there usually in a reasonable price range and adapting to my m50m2 but all the ef lenses are usually huge old looking the designs didn't age well they all look like they were made in the 90 00' when looking at the ef-m lenses there all sleek and clean looking real modern looking lenses. There just all slow. Minus the king lens on the M mount the 32mm and the second 22mm efm lenses are the two best lenses amazing phot quality and speed.
Day to day my mirrorless cameras do see more action than my DSLR because I've always got 1 of them in my bag. But they do come with serious trade offs.
The small size means they are quite awkward to use for prolonged periods of time especially if you have medium or large hands. I love my M5 and X-E2 but often get cramps because I've got big hands. Also battery life is a big issue. I know there's the argument of having more batteries but it's an added expense if you want to do a days worth of shooting or want to shoot video. Plus it's a nightmare in really cold weather. Focusing in low light is an issue and there are generally no cheap lenses to match the equivalent offerings from DSLRs. They're expensive systems to get into.
my a6000 af-s in lowlight fine, better than my dslr Sony a500 and AS good AS my Sony a65 although im now using 30 2.8 instead of 35 1.8. on the one Hand its lighter saying me from cramps, then again its not AS good to grip .battery is no big issue, spares are cheap n smaller than before
100% agree. I’m in the fuji camp, but canon have some awesome SMALL lenses, where fuji do not. The 10-24mm is not only expensive, but quite big - especially compared to this. I don’t need fast f-stop, something like this on Fuji would be EPIC
i really do like your revieuw about this lens , i also have it with a m50 but my picture arent getting sharp like yours ... still being new to the hobby but i cant figure out why
Try to set the aperture at f/5.6 or even f/8 for the sharpest focus. Also try to inhale before you take a photo and then hold your breath or slowly exhale once you capture it. It's also a good idea to plant your feet, squeeze your arms into your torso like a tripod, and use the camera strap around your neck as resistance to keep the camera steady. Another thing is to make sure that image stabilization isn't turned off. Even though the lens has IS, there's no external switch for it, you have to go into the settings. The lens will automatically turn off IS to save battery if it senses you're using a tripod. Make sure to turn it back on if it did turn off, or just rely on manually focusing. If increasing aperture doesn't help, then try increasing the shutter speed (set exposure to 0.4 sec at 11mm and 1/5 sec at 22mm). Just keep in mind, you might lose some depth of field blur by doing these techniques.
excellent, as usual! now …. which all-purpose lens should I start with: EF-M 28mm f/3.5 IS STM Macro lens, as I like to dabble with macro, the EF-M 22mm f/2 STM as it's very small so i'm more likely to carry it everywhere & I can crop for some pseudo macro shots, or the EF-M 11-22mm f/4-5.6 IS STM??? (i may get a lens 1st while i wait for the m50!) btw - love your gorgeous rabbit! :-)
for travelling, 15-45mm is the perfect kit lens which gives you an actual 24-70mm focal length most experts agree is the perfect travel zoom lens. As Christopher also mentioned 22mm is a must for Canon mirrorless. My third choice would be the 18-150mm if you want to just carry one lens. In fact, the 18-150mm and the 22mm would be the only two lenses you would need for most types of photography and video even macro with some modifications. A macro lens should be the third fourth or the sixth lens you get. I would do a bit more research before getting the 28mm cause there are other options and different ways to do macro photography.
It is exactly same size as the 18-55 mm kit lens. Canon strangely makes the lenses so that there are two same size ones: 15-45 mm and 28 mm are also same size as is 55-200 and 18-150 mm.
Christopher, I've just bought a second hand Canon Eos M..... It comes with the standard kit lens but I'm more interested in insect macro photography - although budget is somewhat limited, any recommendations for this mirror less camera?
Christopher I really appreciate your reviews and value your opinion. I love shooting landscapes and I just found myself in a situation where I could not go wide enough to shoot an entire waterfall with Canon M-50 and EOS-M 14-45mm. I would also like to have a lens that rendered more sharpness than the 15 - 45 . I am overwhelmed with the options. I have the Viltrox M-2 adapter (which is also a speedbooster) so I can use M mount lenses or EF I am open to also purchasing the M1 adapter so I can use EF-S lenses also. So... Samyang 12mm f/2.0, EOS-M 11-22, Tamron 10-24 f/3.5, Canon EF-S 10-22, Tokina 11-16??? Thanks in Advance!
Planning for a EOS M50 with two lenses. I usually do landscape and portrait photography. I'm buying a 22 mm f/2 for sure, for its bookah abilities. But I am deciding between 15-45 and 11-22 to be my 2nd lens. Which one would you recommend?
The 15-45 mm is the kit so you should get it. You likely save nothing by omitting it. The 11-22 mm is nice extra if yo need ultra wide. Note that with 4K there is huge crop so you will want the 11-22 mm.
@@christopherfrost Sorry I am a beginner with very little idea on photography. Bought Canon Eos m50 but don’t know where to start. I think I meant portrait photo.
Looks like Pembrokeshire Christopher :) Thank you so much for these series of EF-M lens reviews - I'm thinking of moving over to Canon from my Sony A6000 - just wondered if you had any views/thoughts on the newish M100 compared to your M Camera (3?) Thanks again
I was thinking of upgrading to the M10 actually - technically it's a much superior camera (not to mention smaller). But the M10 doesn't have the extra dials and controls that I like, so I couldn't be bothered in the end
Afternoon Christopher - I've been doing some more digging around, reading reviews etc since posting the question - one of my current considerations being the M6 with EVF add-on (as love the rangefinder style of cameras), however, it seems to get mixed reviews against the Panasonic GX80 - I feel there are far too many choices to be honest - This morning I was even looking at the Olympus ELP8 :) Slowly realising that there is 'not one camera fits all' out there. With moving up from my iPhone for shooting, I was a bit overwhelmed by the Sony A6000, hence considering the M100 as a intermediate stepping stone system to get into photography - after watching a few of your other lens reviews I saw you were based down in Cardiganshire - I'm up in Edinburgh, however, I grew up near Newgale and all my family still lives there - lovely part of the world :) Thanks again for getting back in touch
Hi i am thinking of ordering the Canon EOS M6 Mark 111 today but only if i can get a small light lens that does a bit of everything ie macro, but also is good at night, stabilisation, and getting a bit of a zoom. I saw the Sony RX100 V11 with the fixed lens of i think up too 200mm. Do Canon do a lens like that please that has that good a zoom?? These 2 cameras are about same price but think the Canon may be much better for clear and crisp photos. What do you think?
@@christopherfrost Sorry I am trying to find a good camera, smallish and with good stabilisation as I have a bit of a shake in my hands. I had a Olympus Pen E-PL10 but the lens (14-150mm) I bought with it made it too heavy. Any help or advice would be great. Thanks
@@christopherfrost I don't suppose you have any suggestions? I have a bit of a hand shake so need good stabilisation, would like a touchscreen, good zoom for distance, good macro close up shots, good night shots, sky, fun options In the mode dial etc, good photos clarity sharpness etc, moving shots, video, etc etc. Unfortunately I cannot go out at moment to try in the shops so have to research and buy online so trying to choose wisely.
@@AndriaMrs I'm not an expert on cameras I'm afraid, I only test lenses. Like I said, if you want something as small and light as possible, then check out the Micro 4/3 cameras and lenses (which I don't test myself)
Great video as always. I might be stupid, however, because I don't understand the image quality comparison with that chart. Could someone explain, please?
I've been debating getting a wide angle lens and wanted opinions on this lens compered to the 10-18 mm. I have a mirrorless with the lens adapter and my daughter has a DSLR and will sometimes share my equipment,
The size in the lenses is huge. camerasize.com/compact/#776.386,776.424.2,ha,t Using adapted lenses really ruins the small size of the mirrorless camera.
Get this, the 10-18 mm robins the idea of a small camera:... camerasize.com/compact/#684.386,684.424.2,ha,t ....The 22 mm longest focal length also means that you necessarily do not need to carry additional lens for normal shooting.
@@christopherfrost if i use 10-18 with speed booster, it become widest right? for a real estate interiors, which combination better? 11-22 (like 17ff) or 10-18 (like 11ff)plus speed booster? i need pro advice
This is a great lens. I hear that Canon might be developing a new EF-M ultra wide angle zoom lens though so it might be worth waiting a little while before you make the decision
I'm surprised that you're impressed by the performance against bright lights. Sure there's barely any loss of contrast, but the giant flare around the sun itself is rather ugly and obvious in my opinion
I like this lens overall, i wish there was a little more distortion from it however - just a personal preference when using wide angle lenses i like that barrel distortion!
You said it was a good lens so out and got it another lens made in taiwan its a little more heavy than the others but feels good in the hand another good buy. What do we have next a review of the new canon ef 70-300 is usm would be good although I just got it at a bargain price.
Canon is jerking everyone around. They should release their mirrorless cameras in EOS mount and be done with it. I know they are concerned that will destroy the DSLR...but they are dragging out the inevitable and we don't need to go out and buy all new lenses for M cameras.
Peter Richey It doesn't work like that, unfortunately. A new mount was needed due to the different flange distance. that's why Sony came up with the E Mount instead of just using the older A Moynt
EF/EF-S lenses: 10-18, 18-55, 55-250 EF-M lenses: 11-22, 15-45, 55-200 and it gets even worse with primes. 22mm prime ($250 aperture increase basically), 28mm macro (hope those bugs don't mind being touched), and an expensive 32mm that seemingly nobody asked for since the Sigma is cheaper and on par visually. what is this marketing strategy even?
Stop crying, there are a lot of benefits to the ef-m system. The ef-m lenses are smaller and lighter. The 11-22 is optically superior to the 10-18. Lots of people have been asking for a fast standard prime for ef-m. The Sigma 30mm is inferior to the Canon 32mm in many ways, take sharpness and fringing. So just stopwith your whining and continue shooting with what you like best

Wow. This post didn’t hold up well, considering there are people switching to EOS-M to use that the 32mm prime which is as good as any L lens has ever been.
@@israrhussainaquarius if the image dark, check your shooting setting, you can also shoot raw and boost exposure to make image brighter. Its a good lens.
