Canon EOS 30V / ELAN 7NE Review & Sample Photos

In this video, I review the Canon EOS 30V, a very fast and advanced analog SLR that was released in April 2004. It supports all functionalities of modern Canon EF mount lenses, reliably shoots 4 frames per second, and features an accurate metering system thanks to 35 metering zones. In order to test this camera properly, I took it out on a fashion blogger shoot together with my girlfriend.
Find out about my thoughts in this video. And by the way, if you're a digital Canon shooter thinking about getting into analog photography, you should definitely take a closer look at this camera.
Please note: In the United States, this camera is know as Canon EOS ELAN 7NE. In the Asia-Pacific market as Canon EOS 7s.

Alessandro Sozzi Well I agree to say Max vlog is in the top but it is now better than the other ones you comment it is comparable to Eduardo Pavez (far better street photographer in my opinion than negative feed back) or Ben Horne in analog content (also like Thomas Heaton but is digital). congrats on your vlog Max! Im a Minolta guy so I use the alpha 9 or 7 instead the Canon 30v do you think Canon 30v is better than alpha/Dynax 9?

First time visiting your channel, Max. What a refreshingly genuine review focusing on handling and the shooting experience rather than tech specs (the latter of which can be found easily on the web). The photos show typical analog characteristics and humility: natural unprocessed textures, high DR, relaxed framing, and unpretentious finishing. Well done, and keep it up. You just earned a new subscriber.

I have an Elan 7 with BP-300 grip that I bought in 2001 and only put about 4 rolls through, but then got the first Canon Digital Rebel. The camera sat for 16 years until I recently bought developing supplies for home and took the old girl off the shelf. She's like new and delivering great results with a 50mm 1.8 and 100mm Macro 2.8

Thanks so much for this illuminating video. I sold my 5dmk3 2 years ago to buy a Fujifilm system and have been holding on to my super expensive EF glass hoping to use them again possibly on a FF digital canon or Sony when the tech improved and the price went down. After seeing this video I realized I can use them immediately on a canon film body so I checked craigslist and found a perfect like new condition Elan 7E 15min from my house selling for $20usd!! So glad you uploaded this. Thank you again!

I just bought an EOS 30 yesterday, so it's great to see some others like yourself who are vlogging about their enthusiasm for the camera. I want to try my EF and Zeiss lenses on B&W film, and do some IR with the Rollei 400 stock. You say it's a heavy camera, but to me, one of the plus points was that the EOS 30 is around 300g lighter than my 5D MK.II , in its basic form.

Nice video. I had made the transition from film to digital and sold all my film gear but deeply missed the whole mindset of shooting with film. I was poking around a 2nd hand, junk shop in Bangkok, going through of a box of old point & shoots when I spotted a filthy, sticky, sad looking Canon EOS 7. (Japan version of the Elan 7, EOS30) Actually, it was the attached 24-105 EF lens (original Japan build) that got me excited. When I took it to the cashier and asked "How much?" she went to pick it up, felt the dirty, sticky grip, made a disgusted face and said "300 Baht" ($10) I quickly paid and ran like a thief. It took a bit of effort to clean-up. The rubberized grips had deteriorated badly but the mechanics were perfect, the lens, flawless. Finding fresh CR123a's was a challenge but once I had them and a few rolls of HP5, I was off to the Bangkok riverfront to see what it would do What a great camera; solid and smooth with controls where you can get at them. It felt great to be shooting film again and hearing the substantial "ka-chuk" of the shutter. I do miss doing my own processing and printing and still primarily shoot digital but when the mood strikes, it's feels great to drop the "7" in my bag, grab a couple of rolls of film and go chase a few shadows.

This is one of the best reviews I have seen anyone has ever produce showing off the Canon EOS 30V!!! I have the Canon EOS Elan 7e and Canon EOS 7n and absolutely love my results, but your images were absolutely beautiful color tones! I will have to rate my Portra 400 to 200 and see if I can get the result you cam up with here! Thanks for the inspiration! Keep up the good work as I just stumbled onto your channel and love what I see! Cheers!

@AnalogInsights 7 лет назад
fotosbylang Wow, thanks so much for your comment! Yes, you should definitely try to rate Portra 400 at ISO 200 or even 100. I really enjoy this pastel look.
@fotosbylang4464
@fotosbylang4464 7 лет назад
After you rate it at 200. Are you than shooting at what the meter reading says or are you metering and over exposing it by 1/3 or 2/3 stops over exposing it?
@Verdoux007
@Verdoux007 7 лет назад
+fotosbylang You're overcomplicating things. Just shoot 400 iso film at 200 iso (overexpose by one stop) and develop normally (no pulling). This is not directed at you, but I find it funny how new film shooters are scared shitless to overexpose just because that's the opposite of what you do with digital. With film you can (depending on the film) overexpose by many stops and still see no blown highlights (the negative just becomes really thick).
@AnalogInsights
@AnalogInsights 7 лет назад
fotosbylang In this case I merely rated the film at ISO 200 and used the built-in metering (also for test purposes). So I effectively overexposed by one stop. I usually rate Portra 400 at ISO 200 and manually meter for the shadows underneath my models chin (spot meter). This gives me pretty good results.

Hi Guys, I know this is an old video now. I wanted to add another comment. I have an EOS30, not the V model. I’ve owned it from new (2001) Recently the camera back latch failed. It seems to be a common issue on cameras of this era. However, I was able to buy a replacement part on-line and I was able to do the repair myself in less than 15 minutes. The procedure involves just removing 5 or 6 screws and taking off the end cover and the front cover off the camera to get to the latch and swapped over the contacts that indicate that the back is closed and locked, reattached the spring and reassembled the camera. Whilst I had the front cover off I was able to treat the grip material to stop the rubber becoming too sticky. I’m pleased to have got it working again.

Your girlfriend is an excellent model, looks like she has a great understanding of photography. @AnalogInsights 6 лет назад
Thanks so much for your comment. If you like the pastel look, you should definitely give it a try to push Porta 400 by one or even two stops. The film can certainly handle it and the results can be (depending on the light, of course) incredibly beautiful. :)

Love this camera. Got two of these bodies, that I bought around a decade ago for 30 Euros each as they were pretty unpopular back then. The only analog body I kept. I cannot really understand why you would prefer a A-1 or T-90 over this one. The EF mount allows to adapt most vintage lenses as well.

People that like cameras as accessories more than actually shooting film? I picked up two of them for my photography, one for black and white and one for color. Share the lenses with my digital cameras. They're great for getting good results from film. I've found through trial and error that there's no way to make digital look like film, and there's no beating a black and white darkroom print.

Aarón, you should enjoy the 650 - even better, the 620 - path-setting cameras in the EOS series. Owning each of these as well as a 7, I find the 650/620 more rugged than the 7. Only one focusing point, but not a huge drawback in the more deliberate world of film-shooting and still economical to own. And, yes, the EOS-3 is a magnificent example of more advanced EOS design.

Cool video! 3 years ago a bought a cheap EOS 300x which is much smaller and less professional than the EOS 30V but was also one of the last Film EOS Cameras that Canon has built. I shoot an digital EOS Bodies since 2006 and so it was a very cheap and easy way to give Film a try without spending a lot of money. I got my camera for just 20€ in a very good condition. The handling is also very simlar to digital EOS Bodies. The EOS System has a really big advantage compared to the most other systems. You can use any Autofocus EF Lens that was build since 1987 until now. If you want to go deeper into the EOS System give the EOS 3 camera a try which is my main analog camera these days.

Great review! Too bad I was in Nikon camp, I have Nikon F100 which is also as digital camera, but I think this one is much better than Nikon F100. And Nikon F5 is really heavy for my taste. But they are both a bit older than this Canon EOS 30V.

Amazing.. would you recommend this model vs the original eos 1 or eos 1 HS ?

Thanks for your comment, Glenn. As I haven't tried the EOS 1 or EOS 1 HS, I cannot really speak to how they compare to the EOS 30V featured here. Sorry. :)

Great stuffs usual! Do you have a video showing the process after you take a roll of film? Do you develop it yourself or lab? Keep up the good work.

MrDCB1234 Thanks for your comment. These photos were developed and scanned by my lab but Jules and I intend to do a video on at least black and white development and scanning at some point. Maybe even E6 development.

What do you think about the Minolta X-700 ? I have a dslr but want to get into film as well
@AnalogInsights
@AnalogInsights 7 лет назад
I really enjoy shooting my Minolta XD7 (which is similar to the X-700) and love most of my Minolta lenses. You might want to take a look at my review if you're interested in the Minolta system: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-fu6x7SxSTns.html By the way, the "living room" part of this video was shot with a 35mm Minolta MC f/1.8 lens. :)

Hi Max, I own this camera as well. Any tips on how to use it effectively? I use this body shooting Kodak Portra 400(shooting in ISO400), you use it as ISO 200(you set camera as ISO 200) and then processed as ISO 200? Anyway your images are excellent as usual. Your girl friend looks photogenic as well, you lucky guy.

Hi! Thanks for your comment. If you would like to achieve such a pastel look, overexpose Portra 400 by one or two stops, so set the ISO to 200 or 100 and meter to match that ISO. Like this, the film receives a bit more light than it would usually need but this is perfectly fine in the case of Portra. You then have it developed at box speed (meaning ISO 400) to get these kinds of pastel colors. I hope this helps. :)

Hm, maybe you can find some of the alternative models like the Canon EOS 3? I'm not sure how they were called in Australia when they were released.
