Cool Video! I've got the 5d4, the R and the R5 and I totally agree with you, it's the far superior camera. A little thought about your comparison: It would be helpfull to show Lightroom in Develop mode and press "i" so it shows the settings/information for the pictures
Great video! But your clients will never care about bokeh, if its rounded or clipped. I want to get R6, the only problem I have is that it might overheat on me at the wedding, I do photography as well. Currently I have 2 5D Mark IV.
Thanks! This is true! Clients will never notice. But I have took look at 1000's of images from every wedding and I care ;) You would love the R6. All the best!
Shane Long Photography I have real concern that doing all day wedding pictures will overheat R5 and R6, that’s my main concern about it. Would like to know how your R5 will handle wedding, if you can make feedback about in the next video. If I would be you, bring Mark IV to couple of weddings, just in case, you never know.
Thanks so much for the kind comment! Glad it was helpful! My goal was just to use it and tell what I thought of it! The more I use the camera the more I am impressed with it!
One of the best and most informative reviews I have seen so far. Thank you for covering how buttons and moving focus point works with the R5. As a 5d4 user this was one of the things I was concened about. Good to finally se someone talking about photography and operation of the camera in general. Nice job. The 5d4 also have face detection. I think you missed that when your son walks twoards the camera.
Glad it was helpful! I try to make my videos real to how I use my cameras! You are right on the face detection on the 5D4! It is super accurate for up close portraits! He was too far away and the 5D4 couldn't find his face :( But yeah it wasn't my best focusing job ever as I was trying to hold the camera I was recording on. Haha!
@@ShaneLongPhotography using face tracking you should with 5d4 have to used all the collimators with the option which allows you to determine the starting collimator of the Ai servo (aufocus selects the relevant collimators for tracking the face). It's obviously not more efficient than the R5 but you would have had many fewer missed photos. If the majority of photographers had results as bad as your Ai Servo demonstration on the 5d4 it would have been known quickly :) Once again, this fact will not change the conclusion: the R5's autofocus is much better by far :) Thank you very much for your comparison which is very useful.
I moved from 5d4 to the R5 as well, really happy, good to see you enjoying the R5! Nice to see a photographer react too, so many on RU-vid are more focused on video
Davidson Loriston ; the difference is huge! The Autofocus is amazing, my 85 EF 1.2 was great for portraits but had to overshoot a lot with it for anything else, however with Eye AF, and quicker focusing the RF 1.2 rarely ever misses, and becomes good enough to use as a reliable event lens - rarely missing a shot! the IBIS means you can shoot at speeds slower than you could on the 5D4, and the detail and colour in the shadows is significantly better! I always preferred the colours on my 5d3 to the 5d4, but the R5 raw files handle amazingly well! The crop factor is huge, and the files really feel like you are seeing much more than you can with your eyes! Definitely a camera I will be happy with for many years to come... definitely a camera that will reignite creativity and make every project more satisfying :D
@@Bpp908 huge difference. Let some the lenses are worth the upgrade. Even the widest of them at f1.2 are sharp as hell shot open. Those are said to have a resolution beyond 100mp. And not forget the special lenses that are available now.
I am in the should I shouldnt I camp as well... I have the money... but Im not sure its worth the upgrade - but im so TIRED of missing focus on 5dm4 !!!!! Anyway thanks for this... I never thought of mirrorbox cutting bokeh as a flaw but yeah crazy .....thank you
Interesting video!! But I have not seen/heard anything that would justify paying an additional $1500+ for an upgrade from 5DM4. That is, I did not see/hear about any new feature that will improve my photography above and beyond what I am getting from my current 5DM4. I did see/hear about "nice" new features but none "essential" features based on my usage of my 5DM4.
I think the main thing that can enable certains photos is AF, depending on your situation and what you shoot. But overall, what you'r saying is true but you could say the same thing for almost any DSLR, going back very far in time. As long as I can mount FF EF lenses, have a good central spot AF, and decent enough sensibility and resolution, nothing is "essential". My 5dM3 is still 100% "good enough" and one could say that even my old 40D is almost there. But I'm very happy with the R5 nonetheless, and it makes shooting way more enjoyable ( and easy )
Yeah the 5D Mark IV is a great camera! If you are getting great images with it, keep going! Then when the price comes down in a couple years, see if it would be worth it for you!
It’s 2024, the R5 costs 2650 bucks where I live and still I don’t see a reason to upgrade my 5DM4. Even the specs of the R5M2 seem marginal gains to me.
Thank you so much for your video on the R5. I currently have the Canon 5D mark III, and have been wanting to upgrade for a couple years. Thanks to your wonderful input, I get a new birthday present :)
have you tried comparing jpeg's ? i shot RAW+jpeg large . . if you compare the image raw seems obviously better on the R5 but jpeg on the other hand looks a bit smudge , i dont know if its the settings . . . but i shoot both at 1/80th f2.8 iso 800 with r5 using adapter , PP : standar . .( tho at 1/80th with IS sometimes it looks blury on R5 even on RAW which is weird , 1/8th looks sharp )
I don't know if I quite agree with this video. Don't get me wrong, the R5 is a beast of a camera, but more than worth the upgrade from the 5d mark 4? No. At least not if you're just in for the stills. I personally have an EOS R, which is equal to the mark 4 and I won't be upgrading for at least 2-3 more generations.
So I have this Canon 5D Mk IV and I've been doing my homework on the R5. May think of getting it next year when the price should drop. But I will rent it out in Oct. for a photoshoot and football game. Test before you buy.
This comparison was the most helpful video thus for me with the R5, showing real life comparison shooting against the Mark IV now. I really appreciated you going over the change of button positions. That was a first to see and has been something I've been concerned about, but not anymore! It's helped me see that I really do want the R5 and will spend a little more to buy it! I really appreciated your video and kids, and clean cut, happy face, happy family video! I'll be watching more.
@@ShaneLongPhotography That would be excellent as i loved this review, the best i have seen so far, and i am unsure which one to buy so for you to do a comparison would be brilliant :)
I kinda only watched this video because you're based in Minneapolis and I spent most of my time there before the coronavirus even though I live in Fargo for the moment. I have everything except Canon. I'm happy to see them do better with the camera body but the lenses are too expensive for me. It's the same reason I don't have but one Nikon Z lens. I have more Sony because they had the eye focus and that made my entry into photography easier. When I start getting paid, I might get there R5 but I'm likely to get there RP if it goes on sale this holiday season and the 35 f1.8. I've shot with it. It blew out the highlights too much but I figure that may have been be not being used to Canon differences.
Hopefully the price will drop in the next year or so. I remember it was the same with the 5D3 and the 5D4 when those came out. Price dropped after about 2 or so year.
DO U NOT THIN K THAT WITH A NEW FIRMWARE UPDATE FOR THE 5D4 MOST OF THOSE ISSUES WOULDNT BE FIXED, I SAW THAT THEY GAVE AN UPDATE FOR THE 5D3 BUT NOT THE 5D4, I FIND THAT EXTREMELY WIERD BUT I GUESS THEY DIDNT BECAUSE THEY ARE TRYING TO SELL THE R5
Hey DeJuan! Thanks for the comment! I would think that with a firmware update the Mark IV could at least handle the eye capabilities that the R has as they seem to be about the same camera!
The screen on the R5 is amazing. Not enough love goes to it. I feel more in tune with the art(Eos-r for fun). With my Sony it feels like a machine. I know it’s in focus, but thats about it. Good work. On the video! Ps: Canon please remove the record limit and give me Canon log 2/3. I would love to get rid of my Sony stuff. It really looks like the AF can be trusted(the reason I shoot sony)
Hello, thank you very much for this really practically helpful video. Never seen so much relevant content per second about the R5 :) Sold! Wishing you all the best, be blessed!
Love the video as its one of the first in depth videos that talks about still photos and not video. Thank you for sharing. I believe you stated at the end of the video that you shot a 10hr wedding with this camera? How many batteries did you go threw? How long does a battery last when shooting a wedding? I have the 5dsr and I can put that on at 4 in the morning and it will last most of the day. Thanks again for a great video.
You are welcome! Yeah, I have shot multiple weddings now and the go through about 3 batteries. I use two cameras at the same time, but they are both usually on. The other night I put in an old battery, took 370 photos on a portrait session and had 75% battery life left at the end of the shoot. So the battery life is good. I have like 8 of those batteries so it isn't a big deal to me!
Thanks for a great review. Coming from a 5d4 myself but just picked up the R5 and really look forward using it. Based on you usage so far would you ditch back button focus in favor of the native AF and having a huge investment in EF lenses would you stick with those or start migrating to RF glass?
Glad it was helpful! You are going to love it! I rarely ever use back button focus now. The new AF is perfectly accurate and very smart. And when needed, dragging the single point AF around works great. I have been adapting my EF lenses the last couple years and they work really well on the R cameras. That said when I am shooting a wedding it has become very cumbersome having an adapter on one lens but not on another. Trying to switch the adapter and then put the caps on... So just this week for me, I have switched over all my main lenses to the RF lenses. They are insanely good! I will have reviews up on those new lenses eventually hopefully!
Hi , great detailed and real world review. A couple of other points that might be useful to people are as a hybrid shooter (coming from the 5d4 to the R5) there is the benefit of being able to shoot video through the view finder which really comes into its own on sunny days when the LCD is often so hard to see on the 5D4 . Another is for us retired folk with bad knees the flip out screen makes a heck of a difference for getting those low or overhead shots it is the one thing that if the 5d4 had had I would have kept it longer.
Those are great points! Doing video through the screen is really nice outside on sunny days. And I didn't even think about the bad knees aspect! Happy photographing!
How about battery life? I saw it was rated at 220 shots per charge with the EVF vs the 900 or so for the 5dmk4. How does this translate to the real world?
Hello! Great question! I hope to cover it in my next video! I usually go through about three batteries. With my 5D Mark IV maybe it was two. Not a big deal at all. I have like 8 of those batteries now since Canon has kept the same basic model of the years! The other night I did a one hour family session and took 370 photos and was at 75% battery life at the end of it. Not sure at all how they come up with those ratings! Hope that helps!
Great video! Was wondering why you didn't use DPAF for face detect tracking on the 5D4? Whenever I used my Mark IV, I found that worked very well. Obviously the R5 DPAF II is vastly improved though.
You are right! I should have! I have loved that mode! In the moment I missed that. I was trying to just use a more automatic mode to compare it to the ease of the automatic mode of the R5.
Great question! Adobe DNG converter. It is a free download! Then I import those files into Lightroom. helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/using/adobe-dng-converter.html
Sorry for the slow response! I have been crazy busy over here with wedding season and haven't had time to check my RU-vid comments. I shoot in mechanical with the slower continuous mode. I find it more responsive than the first curtain mode. Hope that helps!
It's nice that there are different cameras for different budgets, but definitely helps to be making money as a business to help buy it! It also holds it value really well to sell it later and get some of that money back!
Great video! Love the bokeh balls observation. Question: did you ever find out how to not have the screen go black when shooting in servo mode on the R5?
This was a great comparison! Looking forward to your ‘real life’ comparison between the R5 and the R6. Very interested to see what you would recommend after testing out both.
Thanks! Yeah that camera looks amazing!!! No doubt it will function just like the R5 but just have less pixels and a few less bells and whistles. Hoping sometime to play around with it! I have like the R5 so much I just ordered a 2nd one as I shoot with 2 cameras!
Shane Long Photography Wow that’s amazing!!! I was thinking to save up for the R6 since it’s more feasible to attain that camera within a shorter period of time. But seeing what the R5 is capable is making hyped😂
Hello! If it were me, I would for sure go with the R6. The AF is on a whole other level, it comes with IBIS, and two card slots. And 20 megapixels is more than enough 99.9 percent of the time. Hope that helps!
I moved from the 5D Mk4 to the EOS R, and now the EOS R5. I love it but I was worried when I got the *temperature warning* icon while shooting just stills. This happened to me at three weddings on both of my EOS R5 bodies. The only way I've found to get around it is to turn the camera bodies off when not actively shooting. Other that getting worried about overheating I haven't had any issues at all and absolutely love these cameras! I plan to make a RU-vid video next month on my journey from the 5D Mk4 to the EOS R and now the EOS R5.
I had the same progression! Would love to see your story. Interesting on the overheating. I haven't have any issues at any of my weddings or even doing sports shooting 20FPS. But you might be on to something with turning it off. I have a habit of turning it off after every set of photos. My thumb just naturally turns it off. And because it boots up sooo much faster than the R, it is almost instantly ready when I need it.
@@ShaneLongPhotography - Coming from the 5D Mk4 I'm used to keeping my camera bodies on all day. Didn't seem to be much of a problem with the EOS R but now with the EOS R5 bodies I had both of them throw up the *temperature warning* icon before the ceremony even began, but that was leaving them on all the time. Ran through two of the "old style" batteries in the grip on one body in less than 4 hours and the other body with two new batteries in the grip made it all the way through just fine. I'll reply to this thread when I get my video up, probably in about a month. Just subscribed, thanks for the great content!
@@ark8tct - *heat issues* - It depends on the situation, but I can tell you that if you're shooting only stills, you won't have any trouble at all. I've been using two EOS R5 bodies since they first came out (I got up at 5am to order them on the release date), which has been over a year and no problems at all when shooting stills. This year I've been doing more video than previously (although still images remain the bulk of my work), and I've only had the *red* temperature warning appear once. It was during a very long wedding ceremony while I was recording in 4k HQ mode. It made me nervous but I got through the entire ceremony (over an hour long) and no problems. The *temperature warning* icon that I occasionally get while shooting stills is *white* and doesn't affect anything or prevent me from taking images. I've seen other videos that describe the possibility of it being linked with the C3 video settings in order to warn you that the camera is getting warm, in case you're shooting hybrid and about to switch from stills to video. It makes sense but I haven't had the problem often enough to worry about it, so I haven't made any changes to the way I do things. I still haven't made my RU-vid video (hopefully in the next month or sooner) detailing the 5D Mk4 vs the EOS R, and EOS R5. There are so many good things about the 5D Mk4 compared to the 5D Mk3 that it deserves its own video! *Bottom line* - If you're using the 5D Mk3 and considering upgrading, I would *strongly recommend* going mirrorless (EOS R, EOS R6, or EOS R5) instead of the 5D Mk4. With the EF to RF lens adapter you can use all your existing lenses (including the EF-s lenses for crop sensor bodies) and they'll be sharper than you've ever seen. When I got the EOS R, my only regret was that I didn't do it sooner. Autofocus is so accurate it feels like I'm cheating! I've written a lot about this stuff on Photography on the Net, so if you get a chance to check out those forums there's a ton of information from others as well. Oh, and you asked about character/color/warmth, and I can tell you that the first day I shot the EOS R (owned it for less than 12 hours), I shot Metropolitan Fashion Week and was really impressed with the image quality over the 5D Mk4. It wasn't a dramatic difference, but I really liked what I was seeing in the shadows. Hopefully this helps answer your questions.
That R5 is so nice. I have a question, does the refresh rate of the evf slow down when using ef lenses and the high speed continuous frame rate? That’s one of the few things i hate with the R.
Great question! That annoys me too on the R! I just tried it out for you and it was improved from the R! As a wedding photographer, most of the time I just in the slower burst mode there are times where that extra burst is nice so it is good to know it doesn't lag like it did before!
Alright well here a solid question. Looking to upgrade from Mark II full frame( got it used for under $300) I have one full frame lens. Gonna be picking up the 70-200 2.8 lens Is it better( I don’t shoot professionally) To get the mark IV and an EF 70-200 2.8 lens Or the 70-200 lens an adapter and the R5? Yeah I know price is big.
Great question! Having used both extensively, I would personally go with the R5 and the adapter any day! The AF, and the camera as a whole, is on a whole other level. It's truly something you have to have in your hands to feel. And if you don't need the 45mpix, look at the R6. Both would be big upgrades! Have fun!
you don't/didn't need ANY of the buttons on top of the DSLRs. I never have to remove my eye from the viewfinder. go into the menus and program your custom functions/buttons. takes 3-5 mins. GREAT VIDEO btw
Totally agree! I used those buttons all the time! And yet I had a hard time getting my finger to press the correct one since they were all in a row. I have found the R5 has more programable buttons and dials so all the functions I need are even easier to access!
Really liked your informative video. I am a professional photographer, and will only shoot stills. No video work. What is your suggestion on memory cards. I'm confused about what is a CF Express and UHS ll, and how big it should be. I'm not technical.
Hello Penni! Great question. Here are links to the SD and CF express cards I recommend! I usually use 64 gig cards, but I sometimes use 128 if I want to put a whole wedding on a card! CF Express Memory Card: amzn.to/3iQ6ajV Sandisk SD Card: amzn.to/2ZgLiKJ CF Express Card Reader: amzn.to/38Ih3jd
Can you explain to me the test you were doing with the boy walking toward you, on the 5div please? How do you set up the camera to track a subject, through the viewfinder, and take stills? I've never understood this. So for wildlife I have manually focus on moving subjects to get stills but it seems you could track a moving subject through the viewfinder and get stills? Thank youl
Hello Stephen! Sorry for the slow response! I have been crazy busy over here with wedding season and haven't had time to check my RU-vid comments. Yep you can totally track a subject through the viewfinder! Maybe this article will help you out! blog.lensprotogo.com/2017/05/03/understanding-canon-5d-mark-iv-autofocus-af-points-af-areas/
Finally a review showing the camera comparison I needed and being used for the things i shoot and the way I shoot. Well done and thank you! Also...I may hate you now because I am probably about to spend $5k. Lol
I think ISO tests is not accurate...if you test with F18, then there will be noise due to narrow aperture as well..maybe testing at F4 in darker areas makes more sense.
Good thought! I was just curious how it would do and since it wasn't yet dark out it was the only way I could think of to make the photo dark ;) I could have used a faster shutter. I have since tried it out in dark situations and it is pretty amazing!
love the review, just what I’ve been looking for. I’m looking to upgrade from the mk3, mainly for photography rather than vids. Would you recommend the R5 still? Any other brands or models you’d recommend looking at in Nov 21? Thanks so much!
Thank you! Been using the R5 for over a year now and have zero regrets. The camera is absolutely incredible. The R6 is also amazing if you want to save a little money. I don't know the other brands very well, but I am more than happy with the R5!
In your opinion, would the 5D4 be better to learn and grow on instead of having a camera like the R5 that comes though for you almost every time with less effort?
Hello Russ! Sorry for the slow time to respond. I had to take a break from RU-vid as I was super busy with photoshoots and family life. You probably have already made your decision. I personally would just jump into mirrorless and get either an R or and R6. The tech is so much better and the EF system wont have much re-sale value. Hope that helps!
One last thing moving the autofocus points I like to use my thumb on the back of the touchscreen. I'm left-handed so I use my left eye dominant and I'll use my left thumb on the left bottom corner and I can hit Focus points super fast
Hi thanks for the video I'm thinking of change to R5 from 5Dmark4 but you used only EF lens with adapter or RF lens and if is EF only how good responds the camera with does thanks in advanced
Both! I have been using the RF 50 and RF35 and adapting all my old EF lenses. The EF lenses work really good. Better than they did on my 5D Mark 4. But it is becoming a little cumbersome with the adapter so I am starting to sell my EF lenses and I am buying mostly RF lenses now. The RF lenses are incredible!!!
I don't have the R5 in my hands yet but could the black screen you mention be due to the shutter mode you are using. I see there are 3 modes -Mechanical Shutter - Electronic 1st Curtain Shutter & Electronic shutter. I think the electronic 1st Curtain is the default.
Thanks for the suggestion! You are correct that it came defaulted to the electronic 1st curtain! I just tried out all three and the all gave me an initial black screen though the electronic shutter was very brief. I need to play around with the settings more to figure it out. I called CPS, but it was still too new to the rep that she didn't know the answer. If you figure it out let me know! Hope you get it soon!
Best review so far. Pity that in Australia there’s little change from $7000. I have a couple of questions Can you use the batteries from earlier Canon cameras? What size is the c raw?
Glad it was helpful! So sad it costs so much there! My sister once lived in Australia! Yes you can use the older batteries. I have batteries up to 10 years old from my old 60D and they still work great! File sizes are very manageable. I just took two filesto compare for you at ISO100. The full RAW photo was 40mb. The CRAW was 20mb. Hope that helps!
Great question. I just finished an engagement session tonight. I had a fully charged old battery in the R5. I took 394 photos and still have 78% left on that battery. So it works way better than advertised. The R5 usually uses about three batteries on a full 10 hour wedding. But not a big deal at all. I have so many of those batteries now since Canon has kept basically the same model for years!
@@ShaneLongPhotography ohh thankyoouuuuuuu sooooooooooooooo muuucchchh it mean with a new battery it can take easily 800+ shots I'm right?? And with battery grip with 2 new batteries it can take almost take 2000 shots I'm right 🤗
I've had the Eos R for a year and was great for portraits.. I like the R5 because I do a lot of animal photography now as well as Landscapes. The extra megapixels make my landscape photography phenomenal and the extra megapixels also allow me to crop especially when I'm shooting birds in flight. Sometimes the birds are just so far away I'm talking almost a thousand yards. And I can still get usable images
Totally the R5 is amazing with animals. I recently bought 100-400 so I could shoot birds, but like you I find myself cropping in a lot and the R5 is great for that!
True! Yeah I would never do that in a portrait session. But I took a landscape photo the other night and exposed for the highlights of the clouds and WOW the shadows I was able to bring back in the ground was incredible! So much fun! And so much easier that taking a bracketed exposure.
Great review, can't wait to have mine. Jesus... how can the canon 5d4 be big for holding.... you must have very small hands... or me big ones. :D hahahahah i think then i will miss the grip of the 5d4
Yeah that will be a subjective one based on size! For many people I think the 5D Mark IV is a great size! I have been shooting with the R the last two years (and the 5D Mark IV) and got used to the size of the R. Hope yours arrives soon!
I'm wondering if that initial blackout when you shoot in burst mode is due to the fact the R5 defaults to Electronic First Curtain Shutter (the R didn't do this). I wonder if full mechanical would fix this.
@@ShaneLongPhotography No, sadly I don't yet. There are EOS-R and EOS-R5 groups on Facebook with quite a few users with R5's. That would be a great place to ask!
Hope that helps!
All of the above! My kit included two 5D Mark IV's and two EOS R's. Both great cameras! If the R had two card slots I would have sold off my Mark IV sooner.
Thanks Shane for the review. I also have the MK4 and the IDX but focusing has always been an issue trying to shoot wide open, and capturing sharp images. I have all the fast glass 35 50 85 100 105 Sigma 135 I love shooting wide but miss so many great photos. I took out 4 RF lenses from Canon and used them with the R camera. 28-70 50 85 and the new 70-200 It was an amazing experience being able to shoot, compose and not have to worry about focusing. You are right the focus system is excellent and the R5 will be even better. Others have mentioned its not a game changer and may not be. Depending on how and what your are photographing. But for most I agree this will be such a joy to work with. I was a film shooter when I started. I had a Hasselblad and 7 primes lenses. When I switched to digital. I purchased the IDS that was the best camera on the market then, and the only full frame. I paid $11,400.00 Canadian. Just for the camera. Then also purchased a number of lenses as well. That was tough selling off the best Zeiss lenses and switching. At least now changing systems, you can use your EF glass and slowing change over when ready. Thanks for sharing.
Hey Photophil! I think you are on to something there! I had the same problem shooting wide open with fast lenses. The R5 has solved all of them! In my next review coming soon, I tested out the R5 with the RF85 1.2 with running subjects, it work perfectly! Thanks for the comment All the best!
@@ShaneLongPhotography thanks Shane I did get the opportunity to try out the R5 R6 and a few RF lenses. So I ordered the R5 RF 50 and RF 85 Great glass and an amazing camera like you said Thanks for sharing your video It was excellent to hear what you had said
I've decided to go R5. Will wait for the Mk2 version and compare it to the Mk1. Right now I dan get a brand new R5 from Canon for $3300. I only shoot photos, so if all the tech in the Mk2 is video centric, I'll get the Mk1!
I love the R5 it has been great for me. I've been doing everything from portraits to Formula Drift. So it really is a great camera for everything including sports. I'm also from Minneapolis area as well by the way!
@@ShaneLongPhotography this camera has made shooting for me even more fun. I have become more comfortable shooting different styles and subjects by using this camera. I'm debating on what lens I want to get next. Not sure if I want to go with the 85mm 1.2 DS or the 50mm 1.2. I've been doing more and more engagment photos and hoping to make my way into shooting weddings this fall. My second camera I have the 50mm and 70-120 2.8, so I think the 85mm may be the one I choose.
Nice video. So while this video is helpful, it doesn't answer all my questions before I spend $3800. I am also curious about what happens if you change lenses if I had forgotten to turn the camera off.
Hey Rich! I am working on my full, one month review of the camera and will have it up hopefully in a week or so! If you change lenses with the camera will on, the sensor is exposed. Turn the camera off and the shutter closes. I can't tell you if it is worth it for you, but after one month of using it, the AF alone is more than worth the price for me. It is absolutely incredible! All the best!
@@ShaneLongPhotography Thanks. I was wondering that since the IBIS could be active with the camera on, and you change lenses, that could cause some damage.
@@ShaneLongPhotography Thanks for your response. Normally, i would turn it off. I sometimes forget with my 5d MIII and have not experienced any problem, but it doesn't have IBIS and I wonder if forgetting to turn the camera off would affect that delicate mechanism.
This was a great video... I have been shooting with the 5DM3 2 years after it came out... was thinking of doing an upgrade to the 5DM4 because the prices are dropping but now thinking I should get the R5 or R6 instead. I 99% of the time do wedding and family pictures so don't need allot of the features but having great focus and better ISO would be so helpful. I somethings take 30 pictures of the bride coming down the isle in AI servo mode just to get 10 usable photo's. Thinking this one I won't need that many which will make for faster editing.
Hello! Thanks for the comment! You are onto something there! I literally was just saying to my wife how many fewer photos I take now that I know the focus hit every time. And I have now been shooting couples walking down the aisle with my 85 at 1.2 and it hits every single time! I definitely remember like you said having to overshoot situations hoping that the focus hit! Those days are gone with the R5 and R6! I would HIGHLY recommend them over the 5D4. All the best in your decision!
@@ShaneLongPhotography Thank you for the info and reply. Another question for weddings I don't need 45 Meg images because normally 16x20 is the largest anyone ever purchases. So with the R5 is I turn down the res to medium I think your video showed it at 21Meg which should enough so the question is shooting in lower res a bad thing or should I have the mind set I paid for 45Meg so I should shoot at 45? I realize this question is a personal preference but looking at your website your allot more skilled then me so your opinion matters to me. Thank you
Hey William! So I thought you could shoot the R5 in a lower resolution but you only have the option of shooting at 45mpix or compressed raw. I shoot at the full resolution and then I have the freedom to crop if I want. I currently export my photos at 30 mpix. The R6 will print 16x20 no problem, so if you don't do drastic crops, that camera will serve you very well and you will definitely save some money! And if you get the R6 you won't have to buy the more expensive memory cards. Two of my friends have the R6 and they really like it for weddings. Hope that helps!
In the shot where I did ISO 8000 I didn't have the shutter speed set the same even though the ISO was the same. 1/500 vs. 1/400. I pushed the exposure of the R5 image slightly to match the 5D image in that one and was shocked so that the grain didn't change so I didn't want waste time in the video explaining what happened. So if anything the R5 image should have been cleaner than the 5D image. In my upcoming review of the R5 I demo the high ISO of the R5 and I am waaaay more impressed with its high ISO than I ever was with the 5D. Hope that helps explain it.
I have the 5D Mk IV and up to this moment I was happy but now I feel inadequate. The cost of the R5 however means I wont be changing anytime soon. The cost is also increased in needing new batteries and CF Express cards. Then there is the advantages of new RF glass over the older EF .... even though the adapter allows EF mount glass. If I get rich by magic I would change to the R5 for the animal eye tracking and the IBIS. Not that bothered about 8k video.
what about r6 then? It's got everything except for the resolution. But to be honest 20mpx is plenty even for canvas prints ;) and cheaper dual sd cards.
The 5D Mark IV is still a great camera and you will be able to make amazing photos with it! Keep saving up and the price of the R5 will eventually come down!
@@mcd5778 it had issues whit mirror motor ( 25$ piece and job done by me), seller was fundrising for 1dx or smth, were short whit 400 euros, i was right man on right place :)
@@ShaneLongPhotography In some reviews I've seen they say that the ISO performance of the 5Dmkiv would be superior to the r5 above ISO 200. What did you find ?
@@ShaneLongPhotography Thanks, yeah I have one, it's a lovely lens, I chose it as it was, I think, the only 85mm with IS, I was interested in how it performed on the R5, most EF glass seems to adapt seamlessly, it's probably going to save me dropping another £2k on the RF 85mm, at least for now!
Dude, I think you. need to review your 5dmkiv usage,. I'm flabbergasted as. to. how. you manage to make the 5div incompetent when it's not. Just because you have the R5! Lol
Thanks for the comment! Yeah the 5D4 is a great camera! I used it for 4 years and loved it. Looks like you are making some great photos with it! Keep it up!
@@ShaneLongPhotography tnx for the reply, dint mean anything bad with my. comment though. I think it's how you used words, well it is what it is. By the end of the day, a camera, or a mega pixel does not make a photo.
Great question! Love it! I now much prefer shooting though an EVF than an optical viewfinder. In actual use I don't notice a huge difference between EVF of the R and the R5, but the R5's viewfinder is better.
I think it is awesome. I went for the R5 for a little more wiggle room of cropping. But for a lot of people I think the R6 will be a phenomenal camera and a great deal. I have another video on my channel where I talk about my through process leading up to my decision between the R5 and R6 if that would be helpful for you!
The 5D is maybe a little better unless you are shooing it in live view like I used to. I will cover it in my upcoming video I am making. At the last wedding I took 1,300 photos on the first battery with the R5. It lasted about 6 hours!
