The Canon EOS RP has been a very interesting camera. Some aspects of the camera were a bit disappointing for video, but what about stills? Was I wrong about this camera? Who is this camera for? Should you buy it? Find out in this final Canon EOS RP Review.

sold my Fujifilm X-T3 for the EOS RP. I shoot stills. don't care much about video. maybe i'll catch my kid running for action. wanted the better low light and lenses from canon.

I considered switching from Canon to Sony (Alpha 7iii) based on all those negative reviews. Then I tested both the Sony as well as the Canon EOS R (because I thought I should at least get the R as the RP isn’t good enough) and also the RP. I got my RP yesterday and can only say, not only is it amazing (absolutely fine dynamic range and noise level, images are fabulous), I am also very glad that I did not pick up the Sony after having tested it (and a college also bought one). The feeling, usability, and everything are just so much better from my point of view on the canon and spending more on the R really wasn’t worth it considering the prize difference. The RP offer sich a good package for a great prize and all that in a very small and light case. Of course there is no perfect camera out there. Most RU-vid testers are looking at cameras from a movie recording perspective, but most buyers don’t care for that feature. The Sony (which many RU-vidrs consider to be the only thing to get ) is good for videos, and it’s a great camera from Sony but no camera is perfect. If you visit forums or talk to people who actually use all those cameras or own them, you often get a complete different experience as to what you find on RU-vid or similar channels. So now that I actually bought and tested the RP I am really glad with this purchase and can only say it’s so much better than what many RU-vidrs said. And now many suddenly revert and are actually positive about it... In the end I learned again to better test things myself and that some specs on paper don’t tell the whole story. Once you actually use a product it also comes down to many more aspects like how usable it is, and how many thoughts for even small things where put into it, that positively impact the day to day use of it. Those things are hard to test and can only be experienced by really using it and discovering all those details in certain situations. Cameras these days are already on such a high level, what is considered „bad“ these days may have been the most „pro“ thing yesterday. Unless you are a real professional who often faces edge cases where you really need to squeeze out the absolute best of your equipment , you may never need or notice those differences in like eg dynamic range and others. If you are interested in buying a new camera, regardless of brand. I recommend going out there into a store and test it or even rent it to check it out in a realistic environment. Having some small extra features, 10% more dynamic range, or extra pixels is worthless if the whole camera just doesn’t fit you and your work. Each camera has its advantages and disadvantages, find the one that fits your workflow and remember that there is not perfect System out there, everything has negative points too.

Yeah, it happened with 5D mark iv and 6D mark ii as well. They were supposed to be terrible based on reviews but yet, I thought they were great. Like you said, there's no camera on the market today that just inherently takes bad pictures. But my complaints about the RP wasn't actually the image quality, but I felt like if you need an affordable full frame camera for photos, you could just get a used 5D mark i, ii, or a 6D mark i for less than half of the price of the RP. For paying $1300 you get a smaller mirrorless camera which can be beneficial to some people but I think in about a year or two, the price will go down, more affordable native lenses will be available, so it will be a much more complete package.

I tell people constantly, a camera is more than a spec-sheet. People seem to completely ignore UX design, interface, lens selection, body design ,ergonomics etc. All because of Dynamic Range, Autofocus points and other technical metrics. A technically brilliant camera isnt worth anything if it's not enjoyable or encouraging to use. I've used all 3 big FF MILC's now (Z6, EOS R and A7III) and between them I'd rate the Sony the best technically ,but the worst ergonomically. I'd rate the Nikon best in terms of ergonomics and controls. But I'd rate the EOS R the best when it comes to lens selection. Like you stated, I'd highly encourage everybody to rent all 3 if you are serious about buying one of them, and make up your own mind. You are totally correct in saying that what we call "bad" today (Like the EOS RPs sensor performance on a technical level) is still amazing and takes great photos.

@@HyunRalphJeong I have been in that ballpark. Sure, I got great images out of the EOS 5D classic, in good light that is. Some fantastic colors. By stating, "get a used 5D mk1" etc, you completely ignore the modern aspect of the RP or nowadays cameras for the target group - EVF, the benefits are obvious, "see what you get" is revolutionary - High ISO performance, with lens and all things equal you get more keepers in low light scenarios - Dual pixel AF and Eye AF, for portraits, again revolutionary - Ease of use, transfer and share the images taken in an instant, wifi, bluetooth to your phone, Snapseed them away to social media - A screen you can rely on and actually use (the 5D mk1 screen is garbage, and you have to rely on the histogram) - SD instead of old CF cards and CF readers - Old camera price is around 200-500 USD, if shutter counts are ignored (only Canon service can read 5D Mk1) it could break in an instant and your hard earned, saved, cash is now gone - Heavy body with spongy buttons What type of EVF (millions of colors or hz), grade of high ISO performance or DR are past the diminishing of returns for most people and only matched upon user based workflow, then the incremental improvements are "worth it". Mk1, 2 etc are truly great side cameras, as I see them. This is the reason I sold my Mk1 and I'm now on the hunt for either a RP or the R.

RP is a great camera for its price. Though 24-105 RF (or EF) lens is not really impressive at all. 24-70 EF or 28-70 RF is great but very expensive, Buy used prime 50mm 1.4 EF (for $200) or 85mm EF and you will get the best image for tiny budget.

This is just not a good camera for the price and crippled features. Like you have just mentioned,, the Sony A72 is a much better choice and its cheaper. Since the 4k in the RP is cropped and useless, then it is only a full frame still camera. Also the Sony A6400 is better than this camera in most features and it is cheaper too again. If you are already a Canon crop shooter, and want to get into Canon's full frame, just get a used 6D original. They are selling at 500 to 800 dollars. And if you want to vlog, then get an other Canon SL2. And you still have money left over. All in all,, as a consumer,,, Price vs Features,,, you are just not getting your money's worth with this RP !
@HyunRalphJeong
@HyunRalphJeong 5 лет назад
It is a pretty hard sell to a lot of people. But I'm guessing by next year, the price will go down like other cameras did. Sony and Nikon will also come out with $1300 full frame mirrorless cameras and only the consumers can win haha.

@@HyunRalphJeong I took a look at B&H prices for a RP with a lens. Its a wopping $ 2,199 bucks. The adapter bundle runs out and its an other 200 bucks extra.... And a Sony a7 iii with a kit lens is $ 2 198 bucks. Sony is one dollar cheaper and it is 100 times better camera than the RP. I am a Canon shooter myself,, i own a T1i, T5i and a 6D1, and there is nothing in the RP that i need. And also, these RP native lenses are crazy expensive.. They are super sharp a beautiful lens.. but way out of my price range even for a serious enthusiast. I think Canon dropped the ball with this one !

I do think people have an opinion without using the camera. I have a 6D mark 2. Yes another hated camera. I was considering a Mirrorless, but just can’t justify the price hike! For an all round camera that does everything good, the 6D is just really good. WHY? Cost: it is now very competitive and a lot cheaper than the “R” which I have been looking at, Yes Sony make some good stuff but native lens are expensive, + lacks the selfie screen which is really good for vlogging, food and low high filming. Weight: yes the mirrorless are light, but the 6D mark 2 is either very close or lighter when fitted with lenses. The “R” lens are heavy and even if you use the adapter, this pushes the camera over the weight of the 6D mark 2. The sony is only slightly lighter. Colour grading: For people who don’t want to colour grade, the jpeg colours are so natural and this makes editing quicker Lens EF lens are easy to come by and have some very good lens options at good prices. 4K Doing 4K properly uses lots of data and processing, I think this is for top end professional photographers, bit rate I find is more important, but if uploading to social media they compress the footage anyway. So how good really does the camera video have to be? I find the 1080p footage downloaded from my editor at the highest bit rate, looks excellent. The RP with the adapter? What is the weight? Is it much lighter than the 6D mark 2. So why go mirrorless, yes it offers a EVF view finder, which is handy and better lens (at a price) but for the hobbist/vlogger, who is not professional, I still see the 6D mark 2 as a very competitve camera

Purchased the Canon EOS PR and matched up with a Tamron 28-300mm F/3.5-6.3 Di VC PZD lens and now enjoy taking photos again. Image quality is excellent and, best of all, all of the features of the Canon RP work with the Tamron lens including all the video formats. The camera fully recognizes then lens and has built in correction factors that you can enable. I purchased the Canon RP before seeing this review and the review is spot on. I am not a professional photographer but like a higher end camera for vacations. This camera and lens combination gives me the flexibility I was looking for. Like any camera, it will take a bit to learn all it can do. I have read the entire manual so at least I know what the camera is capable. Only downside I have encountered is that the macro, portrait, and landscape presets are a submenu of the CSN dial making it had to quickly change from one mode to. the next. There are three programable positions on the top dial that I will read up on and try to program to be equal to the macro, portrait, and landscape features. So far I am impressed with the overall build quality and the weight. The full sensor is a must. First time I have been able to take a 70m photo of the dog, then zoom in on his eye utilizing Photos and see the reflection of the house in the eye. Very cool.

At 9:46 "Just understand that this is an entry level camera and you're not going to win any awards with it".... Really?? I think it's unfair to lead people into thinking they need an expensive pro level camera to win awards. An award goes to the actual photo, not the camera it was taken with. Pro cameras don't necessarily take better pictures; they are usually more robust and faster. They have shutters built for heavy duty use, bigger batteries, dual card slots, weather sealing, etc. But picture quality is not that different. I am a Sony user. (I only shoot stills). I have an A73 and A6400. I love them both. However I end up going out mostly with the A6400, just because its lighter. It's all about weight when I'm walking with a camera all day. So I've recently added an EOS RP + 35/1.8 to my collection and I appreciate having full-frame in such a light package. My attitude towards cameras is not to obsess with what each one does and doesn't do, but instead to work out its plus points and decide if I need them for my working style. In the case of the RP, its strengths are it's weight (for a FF camera), simple menu system (compared to Sony), touch screen and colour science. It's capable of taking incredible images - that could definitely win awards. I enjoyed your review. Thanks.

I bought an RP because I'm coming from an EOS 30D from 2007, so anything is going to be much better than what I have now. However, after shooting with a friend's 6D I decided that I like full-frame a lot better, and I wanted a lighter camera to take with me more places. So, I spent a little extra and picked up the RP instead of an 80D for the full frame, and chose the RP over the 6D2 because of size. Being able to use my current EF lenses but also the upcoming RF lenses makes more sense to me as well.

Almost 2 years after this video, I have been enjoying for some time going out with my RP and one or a few prime lenses, for walking around photography. It complements the 90D in permitting the full use of the primes. And going out with the 2 bodies and 2 lenses, is like having 4 focal lengths. A 24mm and an 85mm make an interesting pairing.

I shoot 5D, 5D2, 3 and 4. I bought the RP because I was going overseas and wanted a backup body to my 5DM4 that was light and could take my EF lenses. I didn't consider the R version but once I got to playing around with the RP I was sold...the fact that ANY point on the sensor can be a focus point would be why I'd switch to this line completely and give up all my 5Ds. I wish, wish, wish there was a programable back wheel that could be used in conjunction with the index finger wheel to allow me to move the focus point while the camera is to my eye (I shoot through the viewfinder). I can use my thumb on the back screen with the camera to my eye but my hands are quite small so I have to work a bit harder than I'd like to get it where I want it. It's a great little full frame camera and well worth a look.

if you have 5D MK IV and EOS R. Then you do not need either 6D MKII or RP :). I got a RP too. Love it. Camera's for me is mainly for photography. Video is secondary. I do not think Canon made this for videographers. The target audience is probably are photographers who wants to take decent videos when they need it. Those people do not care about cinematic 24FPS footage or 120FPS or 4k dual pixel focusing. I also got an control ring EF adapter for this and just love how quickly I can change settings with the ring. At the end, I would not be surprised if Canon sell this more than EOS R. Unless you are picky videographer, this is plenty enough at almost half the price.

Nuwan Sam Yeah you’re exactly right. In my previous video I said I wish the EOS R and the RP were just one camera. EOS R’s sensor and video capabilities with RP’s body without the screen and touch bar at about $1699. But RP at its current state I think will appeal to a lot of Canon upgraders

I can't do pictures and videos simultaneously, even if I'm a wedding pro. Which means a waste of features. The RP looks impressive if photos are the main thing. For vlog ? Well... people do vlog with their phones or GoPro already. For filmmakers ? I think true videographers will always opt a Cine anyways. What I don't like about RP itself is the confusing setup restriction for videos even if the lens got nothing to do with it. Strange. Rather than forced to pack something weird, I would prefer the RP is a total still-only camera but then make it even more CHEAPER.

IMHO this camera would serve the need of a lot as an affordable light weight full-frame that has enough general purpose feature. For me, this is my backup for 5D MK IV. I may miss the burst speed as my daughter does horseback riding but the focus system is better so my hit rate is better, low light is way better, although small it's balanced better with my 24-105f4 than the M5, and I have a pile of batteries as it uses the same one. The faster processor also means it sends images to my phone way faster and I love that it can send them in real time (although this does time out or go to sleep or something somewhat frequently). I failed at transitioning from DSLR (6D) to MILC (RP) the first time. I got annoyed that it didn’t work like a DSLR and sold it. I just bought another RP and have committed to actually learn the features seriously this time. I never found face detection and tracking very useful before but I just set up C1 with settings you suggested (face tracking/Servo/center focus point). I think it might work, especially when I do events. Being away from the RP for a year makes me appreciate it’s features - though I still love my DSLRs. For low light events, an RP/6D combo is going to work very well.

I ended up selling it and getting a second 6D. For events, having identical cameras that you can operate without thinking - in the dark - was more important. Plus, moving the focus point - or even finding where it wandered off to, was a pain. Face tracking chose the wrong face often. And the bigger issue is that faster L lens are very, very expensive. @@HyunRalphJeong To my mind the camera industry has a major problem in that with sales now a quarter of what they were at the peak, manufacturers in order to maximise sucess and recover their R&D and tooling costs for any new model are using a scatter gun approach of throwing in everything including the kitchen sink into the specification. Now whilst reviewers and brand fanboys may think this great I think it horrible because body only prices start North of 2,000 £, $ etc and you end up with a "feature fest" you don't need and probably won't even try. In this respect I agree with you, despite the fuss Canon is probably going in the right direction Here in the UK, you can pick up a host of second hand gear of any brand from very reputable dealers, the kit comes with a warranty and you end up with great value for money. I believe this camera is aimed at Rebel series shooters who want to upgrade to full frame and mirrorless. I have a Rebel series Canon and this one would give me better low light performance, EVF, using the EF lenses as native, without crop factor and getting greater DoF. I already have 2 extra batteries for my APS-C camera, so with the one the camera comes with, I will have 3, which is plenty. In short - for me, the RP would mean better image quality, no learning curve (since all the menus and buttons are pretty much the same), and lowest possible price to move to FF and use the EF lenses I already have anyway. How is all that a bad deal at $1300?

So this video crushed me. I can’t afford a nice camera but I’m def trying to use my RP to win awards and get my photos onto billboards, I was under the impression that this was the next best thing to the R6, and that I could get away with wildlife lenses for my wildlife and surfing photography :(

Ferrari is a bad car because of bad fuel economy! Just understand this is a 1300 entry level camera, and you shouldn’t expect to win any awards. Talk about being straight to the point!

I just purchased this camera with the grip attachment and the ef lens adapter I think this camera looks great and very affordable I was going to get the eos r but after doing research I was sold on the rp and now it's on the way in the mail and I purchased extra batteries as well as a USB so I can attach it to a dummy battery

Also im a filmmaker and im going to be using this camera for my short films I've been using the Canon t6 so this is a huge step up and I never use auto focus at all I'm always using Manuel focus so I know the 4k will be alright without autofocus especially when I'll be leaving it on a tripod and pulling focus
