The RP was a mistake, too many cutbacks. Yes, smaller price, but I would have paid another 1-200 for lpe6 and full 4k and unlimited recording or maybe even just move the 30 min limit to 1 hr. Hopefully RP2 this year will FIX some of the drawbacks of this camera.

The RP is amazing. And I'll share something that may be controversial. I own the Sony A7RIII. Prior to this I owned the A7RII--they are both excellent cameras. My Canon RP has better eye recognition focus than either Sony. How? The RP is worth every penny.

Hi Wes, I did a photoshoot with both the RP and the RP 50 as they both use the same battery. Together I took more than1100 shots in 240 minutes. There was still battery-life left on both camera's. Both shot RAW in the highest setting. Usually I do not take so many photographs of an event. The RP performed well. Is this a professional camera? Yes, if one knows the thing and has a back-up camera. just in case.

I haven’t watched the full video but I know when I moved from the 5D/6D I struggled a lot. Now that I’m completely used to it, I can never go back. I find that all of my L lenses and art lenses work better on the RP than they ever did on the DSLRs. Seeing the exposure, eye tracking, moving the focus point with the track pad (touch screen), accessing the entire Q menu while looking through the EVF and being able to change anything: chomping my images in the EVF without anyone knowing I’m doing it; all a game changer. I. Cannot. Go. Back. All that said, I have tried some RF lenses like the 85 and 35 STMs and didn’t like them. The macro functionality made for too much hunting. They were too slow to focus. But I’m coming from L and art glass so YMMV. I think using the EF-RF adapter with the filters is the way to go. There’s clear, ND, and CIrcular polarizing. With the clear in the adapter, it’s impossible for dust to reach the sensor when you change EF glass. Put in the ND and CPL even with fish eye lenses and never worry about vignetting because the filter is in the adapter. I don’t think I’ll ever use RF lenses!

Hello, I have been shotting DX going back to the release of the Canon 20D. I still have numerous APS-C DSLR's . The only camera shop you can see cameras at these days around me is Best Buys. We were recently in Maul and while my older DSLR's did great in RAW, it was challenging when we went to evening functions, shows and a Luau. I went in to see the 90D, but I after not getting a new camera in 5 years, I would really like to experience Full Format and Mirrorless. I am an amateur photographer since the 70's and do mostly people and scenery photos. I also enjoy shooting RAW and putting the RAW images through Lightroom and Photoshop. I see 3 options within the Canon R line. 1) RP with kit lens - RF 24-105. Pros: would be lowest cost and I would get an excellent intro to Canon Full Format and Mirrorless. I would expect a great leap forward at high ISO from my latest 5-year-old DSLR's. Perceived concern: the better build and features of the R6, Spending good money on a kit lens. 2) RP with a RF 24-105 L. Pros: I would finally get to experience L glass. Perceived concern: not a R6, is the extra cost of the L lens $900 more be worth it and noticeable from an IQ perspective. 3) R6 with RF 204-105 STM kit lens. Pros: love the feel and of the R6. I like heavy cameras. It seems more solid. The RP seems to feel like it has a Rebel build. I really like my Rebel t2I which has been flawless. Sensor cover when changing lens. Would have more feature function. Better ISO. I also like the joystick and the classic EOS dial. Perceived concerns: price, it is over twice the price of the RP. Would not have budget to get L glass. Even a R6 would be pushing my budget limit. So my 3 big questions that I can’t really answer 1) would the R6 be overkill. 2) Would the IQ be noticeably better on the R6? 3) Would I be better off getting the L glass with the RP vs the kits glass on the R6? I have always heard to invest more in lens's that can be used over multiple bodies over time. Would welcome and appreciate feedback for from you since you seem very accomplished with the RP. Thanks so much.

@KaReEdCa 2 года назад
@@nyindallas1 thank you for the kind words. Having owned the the RP and now own the R6... I may be able to address your questions. Yes it's always great to invest in glass.... But there comes a time that a camera will also yield great results. I went to the RP, from a Rebel T4i or 650D depending on your side of the pond. The noise and dynamic range were not as impressive as I had hoped to gain. I later realized that the Dynamic range of the RP was not that much better than the 650D. So that meant that shadow recovery while improved, was not very good. I learned to work around it, and you can do so, but it does require learning the limits of the camera in post and shooting within those limits to ensure good results. Don't get me wrong it's a good camera, but I'm glad I've upgraded to the R6. The R6 is an amazing camera. Low light performance and much improved dynamic range for me as a landscape photographer gives me plenty of latitude without deteriorating the image in post. The only "downside" to the R6 is the 20mp sensor, but for me this is a nonissue. I've printed 3'x 4' photos and they look amazing. I will offer up another option... The R is still an incredible camera, good dynamic range particularly, it's fast to focus produces some great images. It's about 40% cheaper than the R6 and will give you about 90% of the performance. If you are willing to spend the R6 $ + f4 24-105... Id go with the R the F4 lens, and a lens adapter. The lens adapter allows you to use your ef and EFS glass, until you can move up to ef L glass or more RF glass. Hope this helps, and if you any more questions don't hesitate in letting me know.

@@KaReEdCa thanks so much for taking the time to reply. Your photos are world class. As you can see from the attached I have lots of cameras but have not purchased a new one in some time I will look into the R. Doubt any local store will have one. I have always made what I have work. I just shot 800 photos with my reliable Nikon D5200. I look forward to finally getting my first full format camera!

Cool video Wes! The RP has always seemed like an interesting camera to me. What I don’t like and what keeps me from pulling the trigger is that the shutter doesn’t have the protection that the R, R5, and R6 have. I don’t like the idea of ever having to clean that thing! 😂

For larger hands the canon extension grip makes a big difference. Enabling eco mode for better battery life. I think this camera is a great alternative to the fuji apsc cameras especially for travel, and casual non professional work. Yet, can do professional work if needed excluding fast moving subjects.

I have three alternatives: -Canon M50 II -Canon RP -To wait. Maybe Canon would try APSC cameras with RF mount, killing the M mount in the process. Maybe could be a RP II or other affordable full frame in 2022. Even Nikon maybe will launch a Z3 or something. I think I will wait up to the things settle down a bit.

Wes, if you own a Canon camera and use it to shoot video, YOU MUST LEARN HOW TO USE AND TWEAK THE PICTURE STYLES! Can I be any more obnoxious than that? I don't think so. But seriously, until I learned this I was more than a little bit pissed at both my M50 and RP. Also, the HD no-brainer video mode on the RP can be both fun and useful, and the HD mode for stills is a creative blast - and it really can work well hand-held! Lots and lots of videos out there on how to use this camera, but most of them ignore these topics. 😎
@WesKriesel
@WesKriesel 2 года назад
So the picture styles only work on jpg correct? It's something I'm going to try out. I did make a video about simulating Fuji's Acros Yellow with the Canon monochrome picture style. I use my R5 for client work and typically shoot in raw.

Shooting in the Fv mode is great. Look it up! The metering is pretty accurate. The camera will let you know after the shot where the focus point was and if there is any clipping. I heard the gentleman say to shoot to the right, and yes, perhaps less noise, and yes you can bring back some in processing, but beware once blown, it is gone -- nada. When in doubt, take an extra shot under as well. Or if you have the time, and it is not street photography or some action one chance shot, why not shoot a 3 shot bracket? I would also assume, on a normal shoot day, and keeping it all running during say a street shoot, you can rely more closely on 200 to 250 shots. Savings modes and turning off the camera and such might get you more, but don't count on it. I bought a Canon battery for backup, but switch-out of top-off battery at home before leaving for the shoot. Canon makes the camera in Japan, which is great for bringing back jobs to the home country. The Canon optional grip is good when using zoom or heavy lenses, and is less needed when using the 50mm prime. That 50mm is great for $199 -- great value. I use JJC lens hoods which can be bought through Amazon. I use various cameras / brands. My photos are on SmugMug. search: lorenschwiderski smugmug

Excellent video. I’m a current r5 owner who is looking for a secondary camera mainly for sports. Now 80-90% of the time I’m going to be shooting with the r5. In your opinion , can the rp do the job especially with all the firmware updates. I will be putting onit rf L glass and realize it only shoots 4fps. But as stated above , it will be used 10-20% of the time. Your thoughts

I used extra third party batteries as well, but for my purposes I have found that using a lightweight external PD battery pack with wired dummy battery inserted into the RP works far better if I'm shooting all day. When I'm out in the field working landscapes I also carry my extra batteries as well as the small PD (power delivery) battery pack. I did some research and found the PD external packs to be the safest that I could find to work with my Canon cameras. I have a Juice Box and a Ainope 10000mAh 18W fast charge battery pack (small fits in my palm and I have small hands). The small 3rd party batteries will not give dis-charge status on the Canon RP, in menu like the Canon branded battery. The Juice Box is so large that I have never powered it completely down while working with the RP. The Ainope that I purchased has a digital read out on the unit to let you know the percentage of charge remaining on the unit itself. I use it with a smart phone arm band that can also be used on my belt. Works a charm for the RP, and with a separate dummy battery for my other Canon cameras I get to use my packs with them as well! Hope this helps other folks that needed more power for their RP! Thanks Wes!
