Canon Err 01 - How to fix faulty lens communication 📷 

Error 01 is not caused by dirt on the contacts. The error is caused due a problem with the lens diaphragm (usually only occurs on zoom lenses) NEVER use cleaning fluid on the communication contacts on the camera body! NEVER !!

I also suggest go into your cameras setting and do a sensor clean . When I made sure the battery was charge , followed suggestion I looked in the menu and did a sensor clean since I noticed it was doing it automatically. This -worked !

Also when you put the lens on turn the aperture to the highest aperture so f22/29 and take a shot and then turn in it down to as low as it can f3.5 or 2.8 and shoot again I've no idea why this works but it does I

I get this error on occasion, but when I do get the error it is almost always at the most inopportune times. I can usually resolve the issue by wiping down the contacts with a lens cloth but your statement of this happening because of the oils on my skin blocking the contacts has me curious, how exactly does oil from my hands cause this to happen when I have never actually touched that part of the camera with my hands or fingers? I have always been super careful to not only make sure that contacts are never touched I also take extra precaution while changing lenses to make sure nothing falls into the body of the camera.

I'm getting the communication error with only 1 camera body and only 1 lens (5Dm4 & Sigma 28mm) -- the lens works fine on a different camera & other lenses work fine on the 5D --- any ideas?

I had this issue earlier on the 24-105 lens and had to take it to Canon for servicing and it cost me $150. I got this same error today at a professional shoot on the 24-70 f2.8 II, and was shocked that this error turned up in the middle of a shoot without reason. I was worried about another trip to Canon. But on watching this video I decided to try cleaning it with a cloth, and voila, it worked. At least for now. Have another shoot tomorrow, lets see.

When I'm shooting with 50mm 1,8 on my 77d at specific f2,2 shows this error to can anyone help?

It was weird. It did not work for me either. But what I did was have the camera on on auto with the lens on and the lens on manual and started playing with the ring by zooming in and overturning the ring 25 percent and then taking a picture. Zooming out all the way and zooming in completely and turning the ring 50 percent and took another picture. I did the same steps until I got to 150 percent and the camera lens started working. Hope this helps.

Do you know what that error is called? scheduled obsolescence. That error has no solution and has nothing to do with the lens or contact cleaning. I have several lenses that work fine with other cameras but they don't work with my canon 5D Mark III with Err 01. Service is more expensive than a new camera.

Mine only happens when my 70-300mm lens goes to about 200to300mm and then I get the error.

this video is misleading. I think more likely than not, error 01 has nothing to do with dirty contact, because those pin head at camera contact is retractable pins, they are made that way so that when you mount the lens it will press sharply against the contact at the lens side. if there is "oil" on the lens contact that is thick enough that it can prevent the hard pressed pin to not touching the contact, you will have to be really oily, think petroleum tart like oily. It's like if you connect a lamp to the wall socket and it does not lit up, would you think the reason is because your hand oil prevent a good contact? more often I think the problem has to do with defect electronics and circuit board that is connected to the contact, touching the contact with your finger could be the reason but not because of the oil but because of the static charge that burnt the circuit board that connected to it. you would kill your lens much much more likely with static charge than wipe-able oil.

Seriously! What is this world coming to? I don't know if I am more shocked that you made this video or that so many people are drooling over it.... Folks, it literally, yes LITERALLY, says this on the back of the camera. Seems like this would have been the very first thing you do when it tells you to clean your contacts... clean your contacts! What I want to know is what do you do when that is obviously not the problem.

I had this error as I use old lenses and adaptors so the only solution for me is to put gaffer tape on the metal where the adaptor and pins meet works for me..FYI. this is for use with a canon ds5.. I do have EF mount lenses but they keep saying the error so put gaffer tape on the pins of the lens *Not the Cameras pins* This means you can only use the camera in manual mode which is the mode I use all the time..

Does NOT work. It is the "band" - inside the lens - which is broken and needs to be replaced. Everything else is rubbish

Excellent video. Two comments. First, 'cloth' should mean 'freshly washed, non-'fabric softener'' but otherwise well used 100% COTTON t-shirt. Paper towels are made from wood, which is poison to gold contacts. Fabric softener leaves residue. Non freshly washed will have body oils which are leave residue. Synthetic cloth is plastic and can be abrasive. Second, solvent really shouldn't be necessary, but if you have to the only One True Solvent is grain alcohol. All others leave residue. I know this sounds super extreme but these contacts are super sensitive. Pencil eraser, might as well use 220 grit sandpaper, followed by throwing the lens in the garbage. The WD-40 mentioned made my neurons absolutely cringe OMFG!! BTW the worst effect of residue is not just that it is an insulator, but that it collects dust/pollen/micro size smoke particles from the air.

I bought Canon 28-300 3.5 - 5.6 lens and working only on lowest aparature settings. So 28mm f3 5 any higher error 1 no matter what you do also on 35mm, 50mm etc

I keep getting this with 2 of my lenses, but only at 1 focal length, change the focal length even by the smallest of 3mm and it works

I have a Tamron 18-200mm, canon mount with this issue. General camera repair in Pasadena couldn't fix it. Any suggestions?

This problem only occurs with my 21-year-old Sigma 70-300 1:4-5.6 APO lens on a brand new M50 MkII using the Av mode with the aperture set at any value smaller than f4. Seems to be okay on Tv and P though.

Contact cleaner would work, NOT WD40!!! NEVER BUT WD40 IN ELECTRICAL DEVICES!!!

Pro tip - it's not *always* simply that the contacts are being dirty. My 24-70/F4L USM does need a new fladbed cable, and i do know other Canon lenses with that issue as well, like the old 17-40 L. You could believe that i tried *everything* all the web tips, but it's bogus. I need to replace that special cable inside my 24-70 F4L. Sometimes, ppl get a tip on the web, and think it'll fix everything, but it doesn't. I shoot >34 years, FYI. Get my lens repaired soon. 🙂

Hi, I think I put my 24mm stm in my backpack and might've bumped it a little, it's not even getting recognised by the 70D now... Aperture shows 00, no motor sound inside lens, AF-MF doesnt change anything and Err 01 when trying to shoot. Any idea?

My Canon 6d is having trouble with my Canon 100mm macro but it works with other lenses. I put the lens on my Canon 1100D and no problem.

My camera only seems to show this error in AV mode. Why is that happening only in that mode?

I walked away from my camera and it dropped on the carpet so now it’s saying a error. So I think I have to take it to a camera shop now or leave it alone for it don’t say it anymore

Interesting video.... So what if the lens has a very tiny bit of play once the "click" has been established when installing the lens?

Right, when it said "clean the contacts" the first time, I naturally cleaned the contacts repeatedly before resorting to RU-vid. But by why does this body need to communicate with the lens in order to record an image you just shot? Warning comes right after releasing the shutter- My autofocus and iris are working fine, it will AF and close down and release, but then after freeze on this screen and not write the image file; which is clearly irritating when you thought you just took a photo. More curious because I sometimes use old or dumb-adapted or cinema lenses that have no electronics or AF, and they work fine with the camera, every shot. Like, do you know a menu setting or firmware upgrade or something to tell it to record the shot regardless of whether the body can chat about it with the lens after the fact? Like "ignore post-shot focal length metadata" or something?

Luckily it’s the 50mm lens that my camera came with, I usually use a 300mm and it works.

figured it out: only get the error when using the zoom lens...and the battery is running low...

Nice, I was cleaning my contacts with alcohol and a q-tip, just used a cloth and a little elbow grease and IT WORKS!!!

I had already wiped the contacts with no luck, but this video made me want to try again. I used a different cloth and spent a little more time wiping it down. Unbelievable, it's working again. I took over 100 photos with no error message. In the past, up to 10 would return the error. Sure hope it lasts until I can finally afford to purchase an R setup.

Had this very issue last weekend. My (brand new) Canon EOS 80d stopped communicating with my (brand new) Sigma 18-300 zoom. More likely to be the pins aren't making full contact because the Sigma zoom ring is very stiff; it's a known thing with this lens apparently. So probably when I'm zooming back and forth, it's maybe pulling the pins and contacts very slightly out of alignment. Less likely to be dirt or foreign debris as the lens and camera were mated in the shop when I bought them. A good tip. Thanks. Will give it a try should it happen again.

.for those using off brand lens..i found the error came up when i used dslr canon with "pull style " manual/AF on the lens,it showed the error when i kept my pre-sets on ( portrait,sport,TV) and used manual setting on THE LENS. i am thankful for your video for helping with cleaning process..also!

My camera was dormant until an aquaintance tried her hand at taking pictures and screwed everything up as well as now I am repeatedly getting this "clean the lens contacts" message and it is frankly annoying. While watching this, I used a soft fabric and nothing. Your company can help me? I do dare say I hope so.

Many times you only need to twist the lens on the mount a little for the connections to form correctly.

If you have a lens error 1 it is an intermittent fault inside them lens if cleaning the contacts do not work other solutions like putting the lens on then backing it off slightly does not constitute an error fix. The problem lies inside and will need servicing as most quick fixes is not a permanent solution you can also short out other electrical parts of the camera. With The error I message clean contacts is what it says there are other ways like manual mode select maximum aperture turn camera off then turn on and select minimum aperture turn off this sometimes resets the chip inside the lens also removing the battery and refitting may also fix the problem other wise it's a service job DO NOT - buy a EF lens used with any electrical problems at all the seller knows it will be a very costly job to fix after all that why he is selling it .Only buy used EF EFS lenses if you can pyshsically try them on your camera.

Non of these suggestions worked for me. Could have something to do with the age of the lens? The lens is a Tameron AF 70-200 2.8 with an Ultrasonic Silent Drive. I don't see why it shouldn't work.

Why does no one ever do the video you Actually need. Does anyone actually need a video telling you exactly what the error already tells you to do? I need a video showing what Service does when you get this error and you find it isn't the lens. A while back the solution was something like changing the Fstop All the way up, taking a picture, then all the way down, taking a picture, and you were good to go. Which no one mentions, but that definitely worked. But this happened again, and now we can't change the Fstop at all. But it's not worth servicing because it's too old. You're better off buying a new one in many cases. I also wonder how of you send it to canon service, then they say, "yeah it's broken" then charge you to get it back again. With our printer we had an issue and they wanted to just start replacing parts one at a time to decide what was wrong. The list included nearly All of the printer.

I cleaned the contacts - didn't work. I snapped the lens in, then rotated it back about 2mm, turned the camera on and it took the shot, then I snapped the lens in properly while on and the lens became fully functional again. Weird!

So I bought a used lens from Amazon worked fine for a couple pictures then the error code popped up and I was about to raise all particular hell you saved a ebay merchant from my wrath

I have a efs 55-250mm is and it give me the faulty the lens still does auto focus and it still work but the aperture and Image stabilization doesn’t seem to be then I straight away took a micro fibre cloth to wipe the lens contacts and it doesn’t work and I keep wipe it then try take a photo again but still it’s the same and I tried search how to fix it and all RU-vid have is people telling me to tape the lens contact but I don’t want to do that bc I want my lens to work properly and not making it into some glass junk infront of my camera then I stumbled upon this video then I tried wipe it again and still nothing happened. Then now Im so sad bc this lens won’t work and I don’t have the money to replace it and the only shop that fixes lens in my states charges like crazy expensive so ya I dunno what to do now
