So m50 is a mirrorless? That means it's lighter than the SL3. Can I just get the older SL2? I heard for video, the m50 is a little easier to use. That's why it's more popular for video creators.
I've watched hundreds of reviews on RU-vid but they've never cleared my mind, until I watched this video! I'm a beginner and I'm finally going to buy an SL3, thanks to you!
I actually just got my M50 but I think the SL3 is phenomenal as well. I am upgrading from my old and loved 40D so it would have made sense for me to get SL3 and just use the lenses I already have. But I have to say I really really just wanted a mirrorless camera and wanted to stick with Canon. So getting the little converter isn't so big a deal.
Have you enjoyed using the m50 more than the 40d? Im looking to buy my first interchangeable lens camera, I really like the idea of mirrorless, but the 250d/sl3 looks great value.
A huge benefit is the EF glass on the SL3. You have more options, more used options, and you get the "free" extra reach the crop sensor gives you. Plus when you us an EF lens on a crop sensor you are only using the center of the glass and that is the sharpest and least distorted area because it is the easiest to manufacture. Granted you can do the same on the other one with spending even more money for an expensive adapter. Then again, you now have to deal with an adapter. I also like how I can compose, preview, and focus and imagine without even turning the camera on.
Thanks for sharing this interesting perspective! Sometimes that crop does come in handy! I guess it's a little bit fo a double edge sword, but it does depend on what your shooting. At the moment you can get the M50 and the Speedbooster for the same amount as the SL3, so the cost is constantly fluctuating. But having the extra battery life and the optical viewfinder are also huge benefits of the SL3 over the M50.
@@KaiCreative You are absolutely correct, if I shot video I would have purchased the M50 all day long. For my needs the SL3 worked. Coming from someone that takes 40 minutes to decide on a netflix video it wasn't an easy choice but, I don't regret it.
I’m still using a 1200D with a nifty 50 and 24mm (I know shameful 😂) but I must say I’ve got faster with the controls and am looking to upgrade to either the SL3/M50. That adaptor is really making me lean towards the SL3 though..
@@daktadre The 50mm f1.8 on the SL3 is gorgeous. It makes you look much better than you should lol :) I use that lens more than any and the 55-250mm next.
appreciate you man. I was looking for a video that actually took the time to explain the M50s photography abilities instead of the hyped up vlogging capailites that everyone was hyping up. Im a hybrid shooter but more on the photography end. This video is what pushed me to get the m50 i am extremely happy with it thank you!
I would definitely choose sl3 'cause of clean hdmi output and a bigger body which helps to have a better grip on ur hand. It can take up to 1300 photo with some settings if i am not wrong
I love my M50 but I did not know bout the crop factor of 1.6 for the senzor sow a bought the 50 nifty wiche with a normal adaptor ecuales to 80 mm lens then a gat the 30 mm lens from sigma times 1.6 ecuales to 48mm ,sow finele a gat the perfect lense for my portret fotografii 🥰🥰🥰
In the end I got the SL3 + the nifty fifty (50 mm f/1.8) for cheaper than the M50 alone. And recently I got a used Sigma 10-20mm f/3.5 for an incredible price - something that wouldn't have been possible had I gotten the M50.

I was debating which of these I want to upgrade from my T100. I chose the sl3 mostly because I own 4 lenses and didn't want to purchase an adapter to use them. As I'd rather use that money toward purchasing another lens. Great video! It helped confirm I made the right decision for my needs.
I'll probably grab an M50.. No Kit lens.. I need a small lil camera to run on a gimbal for real estate video.. That cam with the 11-22 would probably work well.

This may be a weird input, but I truly love how soft the SL3 is in on the skin, whereas the M50 shows too much heavy detail that will be needed to edit later on,

Great review, but I was wondering whenever people mention 'nifty fifty' it is usually the F1.8 version and not the f1.4. The price difference is also double. The f1.8 would cost around $115.00 US (+/- 10 US dollars). I have both lens and the F1.8 seem more sharper then the F1.4. But of-cause the F1.4 is faster and a bit better in low-light situation. @@blakemartin1700 yes it is 50mm but they were using the more expensive f1.4. If you been playing canon for a while you will know the nifty fifty is always the f1.8 version. Go check it out if you don't believe me. it is a bloody great value lens and something out perform the f1.4. I have both lens. The f1.8 verions 1 & 2. cheapest I seen at the time it was selling brand new $89.00 US. But was almost 9 years ago.

Same . I got it to do at home photoshoots of my newborn and toddler. I already bought the sl3 today. Hoping i made the right decision. Bought the 50mm 1.4 and the 24mm 2,8.. crossing my fingers that I don’t regret it lol. Congrats btw 👼🏻

I got the Canon eos m50 with its kit lens 2 weeks back majorly for videos but it takes amazing pictures. Currently investing to get an adaptor & the 50mm lens.
@@holo6883 Yes the Viltrox speedbooster magnifies the effective focal length by 0.71. So you multiply the crop factor of the M50 (1.6)*0.71 = 1.136 * focal length (:
Great video :) I'm leaning towards the SL3 or the 250d as it's called in my neck of the woods :). I'm new to photography, just want it as a hobby. I'll mainly be taking pictures of my dog and on holidays (once this covid-19 hopefully dies down a bit) so I don't really need anything crazy lens wise. I can't wait to have a play around with it.

If you're here trying to decide which camera to buy...here's my recommendation! The Canon Rebel T7i is better than the SL3 by quite a bit. Just an all-around better quality camera for only $100-$200 more depending on where you buy it. The T7i is great for photography and video. 45afp compared to 9afp on the SL3. That's huge in terms of quality and versatility. There is also the option to film in 24fps, unlike with the SL3. It's strange that the SL3 is randomly lacking that feature. The SL3 is also lacking a hot shoe for external flash. The SL3 almost feels like a fluke camera with all these features it should have missing. I personally would not spend the money on it, especially with word that the newest version scheduled to come out in 2021 will have some upgrades and added features. It will suit some people's needs better than others. I'd say the people who plan on using the camera for gaming/RU-vid/vlogging, etc...it's aimed more towards you than a photographer/videographer. Just research and make a decision based on your own personal needs/opinions, as there are other options too, like the M50. The only thing the SL3 has in comparison to T7i is 4k video and a mic jack. I don't need that personally, and the video capabilities on the T7i are more than enough for most people's needs. I absolutely love my T7i and am very satisfied. I believe you will be too if your main use for a camera is ***photography*** and video! Those 45afp are truly everything! As well as the ability to shoot video in 24fps. Oh yeah, and it has a hot shoe! Hope this helps someone!
Per Canon Decision, which compares cameras across many metrics, the SL3 is rated substantially higher than the T7i (129 out of 1271 cameras versus 162). Bottom line, beyond such objective comparisons, we select our favorites based on personal preferences as well, so stating that one is "better than" another is often subjective. But in terms of objective specs, while the T7i is a fine camera, it ranks a bit below the SL3.
For me, I recently got a T6i and an SL3. The T6i is a little heavier but not noticeable for me. I thought about the M50 but decided on the SL3. If I liked the smaller form-factor I would rather have a Sony.
@NagarjunaLucky I am on my second 250D/SL3. The first one I could not get a good focus with it. This one is much better and I think I like it better than the T6i.

I’ve used both now for years and they are still going strong - really up to you if you prefer mirrorless or DSLR - honestly the m50 is slightly more compact
I recently bought a SL3. I mostly use bridge cameras so I am not used to the shutter noise. I need to go find some good subjects to shoot with the SL3 as I have found it challenging to get decent shots so far.
I do not find a fundamental difference between them except for the mirror, although I own a Canon 250D camera, but it performs well both in the photo and in the video

With M50 we have to buy extra battery, adapters and with sl3 canon brand's own flash lights.i wud go with sl3 in this case bcoz m mount lens are costly with m50.
Hmm.. thought my T6i was outdated by mirrorless- I need to appreciate my trusty T6i - still producing amazing pix. Canon- it's always a GREAT investment ❗
I still use my 18 megapixel Canon T6 for photography. I'm going to buy a 85mm 1.8 lens for portraits. I use a Sony a6400 for filmmaking. But when it comes to skin tones, & color my old trusty T6 still does the job.
So all things considered. The only real difference is the EVF vs OVF. They have the same crop factor in the sensor and you can get a cheap adapter which can be upgraded if you want less crop. The viltrox isn't a must. Extra batteries are needed for the M50 from the get-go and it has less auto-focus points. But the 250D can only take like 350 shots when you use the screen for those 3k focus points and using your OVF in harsh sunlight with those 9 points seems like too big of a trade-off to me (unless you're used to DSLR I guess, I'm new to this). It's better for vlogging thanks to the eye tracking though. The M50 at a lower price seems like a better deal to me for photography
Hello kai, just wanted to know if the 9 af point through the ovf really matters much as compared to m50 evf 143 af points?? Im someone who is switching from iphone to a specific camera! I am literally stuck in between these two beautiful cameras! Please help me if you can. My main purpose is photography(hobby) and congratulations on your 10k subs!!!!
atul ojha thanks Atul! It depends on what you are used to - I come from a DSLR background and am used to the optical viewfinder and setting focus points manually - but I’m getting used to the EVF of the M50 also both of these cameras have DPAF too which you can use to take photos (: if you want more versatility with video too I’d probably lean towards the M50.
Thanks kai! In india the price difference is not much! 30-40 u$. So i will probably go with m50. Later on i can buy the adapter and the lenses for dslr which are pretty cheap as compared to m mount lens!
Hey atul. I have the same dilemma. I'm having trouble choosing between the sl3 and the m50. The main gripe with the sl3 is 9 af points on the ovf. I thought i could solve it by just using the camera in live view mode, but then i heard this in another review that using it in live view mode would decrease the sl3's battery to a great extent. And the sl3's better battery life is the main reason why i wanted to go with the dslr in the first place!! I'm very confused. I would love to know what you chose and your thoughts on this please
I have both of these on my shopping cart Amazon. I want to improve my RU-vid channel to give that cinema look view. Action cameras and phone cameras don't do this. Excellent video, thanks for showing this. Thumbs up.
Interesting vlog Kai. Owning an M50 mkI I have been disappointed by the news of the spec for the mkII in my search for a second camera body. While the M50 is very cute, portable & light (by the time added a small rig cage with extras it became less than light) I find it a bit fiddly to grip and may well end up with a 250D along side it in my camera bag. Good vlog & advice, I've subbed.
How is the sl3 in low-light? What is the sweet spot to select a all in 1 lense for a beginner with low light pictures and videos and for taking pictures of moving targets like kids etc...

Let's be honest Kai if you're buying the M50 or SL3 or both you may never have the funds for Canon L glass. Sigma Art or Contemporary will get you close to L glass at a more affordable price. I have the Sigma C 16mm, 30mm & 56mm f1.4 lenses for the M50 and have my eye on some Sigma A lenses for the SL3 in particular the 18-35mm f1.8, & 70-200 f2.8. While I own a nifty fifty I wonder if I should stick with it or invest in the Canon EF 50mm f1.4 as the thought of attaching it to my speed booster on the M50 to achieve a sub f1.4 sounds appealing?
Great question. Turn the camera to video mode first (top dial off -> on -> Video camera icon), then hit menu -> go to the spanner icon -> menu 4 -> Select grid when shooting -> choose the grid you want. Hope that helps (:
kai hope you are keeping sound health, this video is just i was looking for. but even now i am not able to decide on a particular model, my needs are image quality and capability to get decent pictures in low light, my interest is 90% photography and only 10% video, and photography is absolutely new task i have taken in hand after retirement as purely hobby.
