I don't understand people picking this stuff apart. All the modern cameras are excellent and do most anything a reasonable person with a remotely normal use-case could want. It's surely more of a preference which system you prefer at this point. Some are cheaper, some have more interesting glass, some may have ergonomics you like etc.

Canon's decision on the global shutter makes perfect sense. The readout speed is now fast enough that it's very rare you'd need a global shutter (judging by real-world testing), and why would they want to take the dynamic range hit? The latter is going to reduce utility for far more people.

The head-scratcher for me is that the two standout features (the AI autofocus modes) are on both cameras, and the R5ii has more megapixels for less money. None of the R1’s advantages over the R5ii justify the price. I think the people priority AF is going to make the R5ii huge with wedding shooters, just for the ability to always pick the bride or the wedding party out of large groups.

All well said Matt. No one actually had the official camera(s) and it strikes me that most of the negative comments are coming from either Nikon or Sony shooters or Canon shooters who were never going to buy the R1 anyway.

Actually people have used R1 in the field already when they have developed it. I know there's for example F1 shooter who was using R3 before and tested/used R1 before launch. As a end quote he said that R1 is superior against R3. Like Matt said R1 is a very specific camera for a narrow market. It's like well iterated tool for a certain job 👍

I just wish the R5ii would have had dual CF Express type B card slots. If your main card fails, you are stuck with the backup card. The R5ii at 45mp could really have used the second CF Express type B card slot. The R1 really doesn't need both.

It's makes the R5 mk 2 Rolling Shutter worse than Z8 . Also the buffer on the R-5 Mk 2 is very small in comparison to Z8 PLUS you have to wait for an undisclosed time for it to refresh PLUS Going by the fan in one Battery Grip : Surprise Surprise : R5 mk 2 overheats especially when doing 4 k video downsampled from 8k . Weather sealing in R5/2 is not as good as Z8 The AF in Z8 is iffy to begin to use but it's far more sticky than R5/2 ... So as time begins to fly past this is looking like another questionable move by Canon inspite of what the long haired one or the one with a wife in the pic says .... Z8 is already looking like a generation ahead or R5/2 and we have not yet begun to speak about the highly affordable pricing of R5/2 for billionaires

This is the big point that Canon is making that people are ignoring and focusing on perhaps the less important stuff (like noise and DR, and the fact that the R1 "only" has 24MP). They're neglecting one of the key elements that most pro photographers look for in a camera -- AF, and I think Canon did a good job here, even though for the enthusiasts the R1 maybe didn't hit the mark in terms of resolution (since a lot of people like to compare it to the Z9 and the A1). But they're missing one of the biggest aspects of a "pro" camera... Plus I don't really understand the big hype about shutterless designs. I mean I know there are benefits to them, but there are also drawbacks that people aren't realizing could become a problem for them in some cases if they use strobes, for example, and specifically some third party strobes in HSS mode. This is one area that I wish my Z8 had a mechanical shutter (I have a Zf, thankfully, so it's not really an issue as i can use that instead) but it is something that people sort of ignore in the shutterless vs shutter design. OF course a shutterless design will likely let you shoot faster (higher burst rates) but part of that is also the sensor too which the new Canons have fast enough readouts that it probably isn't a concern. That is somewhat of a strange response by the Canon rep, as I would think most people would want to implement a GS if they could because of the benefits, but it probably takes a heck of a lot of processing, and they may have needed additional hardware (and much more expensive sensor design) to pull it off and they probably couldn't find a way to make both happen (faster AF and a global shutter so they focused on what they're already good at which is AF). HOwever, part of me wonders if this is also intentional (and the rep was tiptoeing around the subject as Canon may have plans for a global shutter higher-res body for a Mark II in development, and that the current R1 is more or less a filler to stop people from moving to Nikon or Sony, although some probably have after seeing some of the specs and the price of the R1). On the subject of global shutters this does make me wonder if Nikon might try something crazy like a dual 20MP sensor design with dual Expeed 7's or 8's (whatever that might be) and effectively make a high-res global shutter design that is basically two imaging systems fused together for speed (each processor would handle it's 20MP of the sensor and essentially split the workload. Not sure how reading the sensors would work but if they were fused together it's possible that that is also split up but it's just something I was thinking about as a "workaround" to the current design(s)).

The price is the same here in Australia (I actually paid less for the Canon R5 mkII than I did for the original Canon R5), so hardly seems a necessary criticism for you.

I think based on just the specs sheet, it is very difficult to see how much different the R1 is comparing to the R3 because beside shooting 10 fps more, they are very similar in terms of most of the specs. Maybe the autofocus of the R1 is much improved comparing to the R3. One thing for sure is that both R5 mark ii and R1 can do pre capture in Raw which is something the Nikon Z9 and Z8 can’t do and I suspect that pre capture raw won’t happen with the current generation of cameras because even in jpeg mode, it’s pre capture can only do the normal jpeg instead of fine jpeg so I reckon it could be the limitation with the current image processor even though the sensor readout speed seems to be quicker than R1

Canon seems to be behind on sensor technology. Everything around the sensor looks good if unfinished, but 24 MP with 40 fps isn't going to wow anyone these days. For $6300 too. I do wish Sony would release a competitor to the Z8 for around $4,000... or drop the price of the A1.
@russellwright9961
@russellwright9961 Месяц назад
I strongly considered Canon at one point, but didn’t understand why they are so much more expensive for everything. The RF lenses are great, but my goodness they are expensive. As for Sony, I’ll be surprised if they develop a camera that can compete with the Z8 in terms of specs and price. At the moment, you can get a Z8 for $3500 USD; I just don’t see Sony competing with this…
@sidvicious3129
@sidvicious3129 Месяц назад
I think you are right Matt, Canon normally, along with Nikon release their flagships at $6500, but Nikon undercut the market, which was smart for market share. If the autofocus is as good as now being stated and if Canon had of launched or even now changes their price to match Nikon at $5500, the R1 would be a runaway hit. People are looking at what does $1000 get you that you can't currently get in the market now. This just shows how badly Sony needs to reduce the A1 price to either the A9III or even to $5500 as it is way overpriced in this current market. If Canon allows more RF manufacturers creating glass, Tamron and SIgma and reduce that price to $5500 for the R1 and $3999 for the R5II the market will belong to Canon forcing Sony's hand, which is what Nikon did with the Z9. It is just a matter of will Canon allow greed, like Sony with the over $6000 pricing to dictate MarketShare. Canon is not far if any behind Sony and Nikon. Nikon just made the better decision.

What Canon brings to the table with the two new iterations is not to me revolutionary for RFP tag? I was expecting the R5II to have better tech compared to the Z8 but honestly not much? To me the R5II's auto capture ability to shoot in raw is perhaps the only plus point. This body cost more then the Z8, so I'm not so wow about this new unit at all. The prices of the RF's lenses is just to high, leaning close to Leica's Summicron range. I think Canon got it wrong for what the R1 offers? The R3 could do almost all the R1 does. The R1 should get a dose of higher pixels and not 24. Nikon I think got their strategy right with the Z6III and Z8. Sony shooters using the A7R5 will not lose sleep with Canon''s new two releases. Lastly, Canon's refusal to allow third party lenses to be on board is baffling? Gone are the days when third party makes were not up to the mark? That isn't the case now. Sony and Nikon will benefit from this clause alone. Earlier on about 3 months ago, I was expecting Leica's SL3 to be a show stopper but sadly, that too turns out to have little incremental improvements from the SL2. I was more impressed with Lumix's GH7 and Sony's A9II more to be honest? Let us see what Fujifilm will come out next? To me for now, the Z8 is still almost the near perfect camera body

@@UnconventionalReasoning Having competition is great because it forces everyone to do better and be more innovative. I think from 2012 to 2017, Canon and Nikon didn't update or innovate their DSLR cameras much because the two of them were at the top. No one was going to dethrone them anytime soon. They stuck with DSLR while Sony in 2013 invested heavily into Mirrorless. It finally paid off in 2017 with the A9. Even then, Canon and Nikon weren't too worry and still made DSLR. At one point, Canon thought about releasing a 5D mark V but canned it because Mirrorless was the route to go in 2018 when the a7iii came out being far more affordable and better. What attracted me to Mirrorless was the EVF, Face-AF and especially the LIVE view!!! I made the switch to Sony mirrroless back in 2015 and it was scary. Because if Sony failed, my a7Sii would have been a junk camera with no resale value. Glad Sony succeeded and forced Nikon and Canon to invest in Mirrorless tech or get left behind.

When someone is asking about cameras, standing in sight of the Canon, Sony, Fuji, Olympus, Nikon, and Panasonic counters at a camera store, the company is often more important than a particular camera. If the corporate philosophy is, "We don't owe you anything. You'll take what we give you and like it," I'll steer them to a different brand, one which is more responsive. I have been postponing the transition to a mirrorless camera, it does not feel right to me, the optical viewfinder has always been my best friend. Now, I have been using continuos lighting due to video footage needed simultaneously. I feel it’s time to let DSLR cameras go (5D MKIV and 5DsR), motion blur is consistent and high iso adds too much noise for large banner prints for advertising or image cropping.
