Dominating the R5C content market on RU-vid. I love it! I shot a bunch of stuff in XAVC CLog3 today and I'm struggling with the colour correction. Felt like I nailed the exposure, but really struggling to max out that dynamic range without blowing out lights or crushing darks.

RAW with ISO at 800 or 3200 seems to give me the best results. I kept underexposing my shots thinking I had good exposure. The color on under exposed shots... for me up to this point with use, has been worse on color than overexposing. I have been surprised how much I can get back in post with bringing highlights back down. The waveform monitor helps a lot, but ultimately, I have invested in the PORTKEYS LH5P II monitor. It is only $400, has insane brightness and has been allowing me to pull much better focus and make much better exposure decisions fast.

@@AshvonChamier I stuck to the two native ISO values myself, but as you pointed out in your video, in CLOG-3, it's those muddy shadows that I find to be a problem. Never heard of that monitor! I was using the Ninja V, which -- hot take -- I've never been a fan of.

Amazing video, thanks for sharing. Could you (if not already) go over how you are exposing for C.Log in the field? I'm having trouble determining what values I need to stay under, specifically exposing for human footage in a brightly-lit outdoor situation. I tend to under expose and I've seen that most people are slightly over exposing when using C.Log 3. Recently been recording in Rec.709 Wide DR but that gets baked-in to the footage, albeit making it easier to get nice footage straight out of camera. I know I'm leaving a ton of potential detail and DR on the table by doing this, and not fully utilizing the sensor capabilities of the R5C.

I understand your situation. I found for a good while that if I was using the VIEW ASSIST canon offers in the camera while filming in C-Log 3, I was underexposing. When I didn't use "view assist" and viewed it a C-Log 3, I was more accurate but sometimes overexposing. At this point, I use "view assist" and expose just to the point of clipping the highlights. Sounds ridiculous, but if you go to the point where this just happens, again while using "VIEW ASSIST", the highlights are not actually clipped in the C-LOG 3 footage. But of course, they will be if you go any more past that threshold you just want to touch. If I am run n gunning between in and outdoors, I have been putting it in Auto-ISO. So I can film the transition all in one continuous shot where I am focusing on composition and focus. Hope that helps!

Dude thank you so much! Great video. I wonder if my raw footage looked so bad simply bc of me grading my xavc footage and using those grades. And all of the quick conversion luts by canon ive been using were for clog3! Going to do some testing for sure. Also, i love that shot u did of the flower. Just. WOW. Edit: After changing the raw file to CLOG3, my grade now matches my xavc footage way better. Makes sense. Really helps. Also, do you have/use canon's official conversion LUTs? They are pretty damn awesome. I wanted to note to you since I watched ur other videos: my 8k raw runs fine in the new premiere. Maybe u should update or reinstall gpu drivers or reinstall premiere. I think you listed your PC specs before and I reckon we have very similar specs. 5950x, 128gb (mine may be faster), 3090... but I have a killer mobo that could be helping as well. I have to run it in half resolution, but I have no problems. Lastly, I wanted to ask: what do you use to denoise? I notice you have red giant as well. I have Maxon One, the new red giant complete, and was wondering if you like the magic bullet denoiser. My main issue with 8k so far is that its just so much noisier since its not brought down to 4k and doesn't noise cancel.

Sweet! Glad that info helped clear up your RAW settings to get those LUTs to perform as expected. Yes, I do have those Canon LUTs installed. I am finding myself using them half of the time. When I do use them, I am often times using it at only 70-80% intensity. They are good! I just have such a large library of LUTs, I bounce around a lot, especially while doing all this new testing on the new cam. Then on some grades, I don't use any LUTs and just craft a look from scratch. That is super cool you have such a similarly specked computer and thank you very much for letting me know your performance is good in the latest Premiere. I will try reinstalling as doing just the update has still not resolved my issue with real-time playback. Totally with you on only runing at half resolution. I should have mentioned that is what I was doing in the OLD PREMIERE real-time playback examples in that episode. My computer was built by Puget Systems and I have been nothing but happy with it. This has to be some weird hiccup with software install/setup. I do use Red Giants Denoiser on my projects. However, I have only needed to use it a couple of times on any of this new R5C footage I have been showing. I think I am overexposing by a half stop pretty consistently. That might be why my noise levels have been acceptable or non existent in mast shots I have been reviewing?

@@AshvonChamier that must be it. Im very much an under-exposer. Definitely going to work on that. I appreciate all your replies to my comments. Im having a blast figuring out this camera together man! :)

Good info. Thanks. I shoot in WideDR a lot. And adjust color for look from there? Great shirt. How many young people give you the tilted head look? It's funny shet.

HAHA! Thanks. Yeah, I had to snag the shirt when I came across it. I am still experimenting with WideDR as well. Lot of fun options to work with in this camera man. Loving it!

Thanks for your video. I am old to video (I was thinking too old) but new to color grading, and I've been struggling to figure out C Log 3 and Adobe Premier. Many RU-vid videos seem to be steering folks toward Davinci Resolve. My preference is to stick with Premier Pro, rather than having to learn another system at this point, so your video was very helpful in getting me started! I downloaded a bunch of C Log3 luts from Canon and I am a bit confused about the differences between them all. After watching your video I am getting the sense that I don't actually need them if I do the simple adjustments that you suggest, but I'm not sure if this is correct?

Great! Glad you found it helpful. I still do all my color grading inside of Premiere but I do also like to use some RED GIANT MAGIC BULLETS suite of plugin tools for some particular tools it offers. That being said, you can do an insane amount just using LUMETRI. You do not have to use LUTS. I usually do use LUTS, but over the years, what I have started to prefer is to adjustments like I show in this video to get my base look rather than using the LUT to get my base look. Then I use LUTS as a look to put on top. I most often do not use a LUT at its full intensity. In the LUMETRI PANEL, go to the CREATIVE TAB to add a LUT and then adjust it's intensity. I often use a LUT somewhere between 30-60%. After figuring out which LUT you think is adding a cool overall look, you then might find you need to go back and make some small adjustments to your EXPOSURE and CONTRAST for the particular LUT you wanting to use. But, you don't have to use LUT's at all. Sometimes I don't. The CANON LUT's don't have much of a LOOK to them. They are just an attempt to help you get you to base line. Sometimes, that you you pretty close. You will still then want to explore the intensity of the LUT and adjustments with the sliders I show in the video of Exposure, Contrast, and Saturation to cater to the LUT. Best of luck continuing to explore. If you are curious to see how far you can go with just color grading inside of Adobe Premiere, feel free to glance at my website. Literally every video was done inside Premiere, using LUMETRI and a little boost with Magic Bullets Plugin tools which are way more intuitive than RESOLVE. www.RoughCutProductions.com

cool video, that helps a lot because i was thinking to get the c70...in terms of dynamic range and shadow recovery...what do you think how many stops of dr has the r5c in raw?
@AshvonChamier
@AshvonChamier Год назад
Thanks! The most in depth spec driven breakdown I have seen done on the R5 C showed around 12.5 stops when filming in RAW. That being said, I have also seen side by sides of it pitted against the C70 and was surprised how little the C70 eeks by with a bit more DR performance even though it is rated at 16 stops. Then I tested it against my RED EPIC DRAGON in a very ROUGH harsh condition test here in this video. The R5 C held up REALLY well. Overall, every time I see side by side, I like the sharper more robust image coming out of the the R5 C over the C70. Here is my SUPER rough harsh dynamic range test I was referring too against my RED EPIC DRAGON. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-kZWkH8FqgJg.html&t

Great video! 👍🏻 12Bit RAW is just so nice to color grade with... I'm definitely going to get the R5C as my main camera sooner or later, and I've just found out that you can shoot 3K 120fps in RAW!? 😄 It would be great if you could test this and make a video about the slowmotion capability of the camera in general, e.g. 5.9K 60fps RAW, 4K XF-AVC 120fps ...
