It's one thing to love the specs of a camera, it's another to take the Canon R6 in the field on a real wedding, engagement session, and full-day portrait work.
✨✨Are you on the INSIDE? Check out thephotoinsiders.com - EXCLUSIVE video content and learning community for photographers✨✨
Here's my full take on the camera along with Q&A from the live session on my Instagram where this was originally filmed. I’m talking mostly about the Canon EOS R6 for stills, not as much about video, since I’m a photographer I feel bettering doing a Canon R6 review for photography.
Here's my Canon R6 Real-world Review 3 months later. I have used this gear in the field for different real photography sessions.
Hope you enJoy!

I started my photography journey with a Canon Rebel SL1 and I gifted myself with the R6 right when it was released!! I freaking love it!! I never felt there was a learning curve. It has given me a renewed excitement about photography! And with your educational videos, I'm on top of the world! I do enjoy peanut butter with vanilla ice cream with chocolate chips! Thank you so much for all that you do!! ❤

Spot on girl! Once again you've pointed out all the important things. Understanding what's relevant will help your viewers. For my work it was the reliability of the R5 AF you've mentioned, since the most time consuming part of my editing has always been, checking focus. On a regular shoot day, I shoot between 5000-6000 frames. After selecting, there are still 2500-3000 frames left. which I have to check for focus (keeps me up all night). I just finished a weeks shoot for a mail order company with the R5. After checking focus for the first 4 days and not finding any out of focus frames, I felt confident enough to skip checking focus. That's a first and makes a huge difference in sleeping time!!! Keep doing this. You're a great guide! Matthaeus

Thanks a million for the practical review! I rented an R6 last month to shoot a festival along side my trusty 6D. You were absolutely right - the ergonomics are spot on, and muscle memory made it entirely painless to swap back and forth between cameras. In fact, I loved the R6 so much that I picked one up last week. Also, peanut butter on fresh celery. 😊

I went from a 10 year old DSLR to the R5, and the learning curve to mirrorless was minimal. It was more learning a new camera, where all of the buttons & their functionality are. Plus learning the new menus, plus the menu system for video.

Peanut Butter on waffles - I am a Brooklyn based Documentary Filmmaker and in the process of updating my rig for my next film project I watched Jared's R6 video, and immediately stopped looking at replacement video cameras and picked up the R6 with the 24-105 lens. I love how this camera shoots and now I can get back into seriously shooting stills again as well as video. Loved your breakdown of the R6!!!

Thanks for a comprehensive and very "real life" approach review. Totally like the way you present the camera. I came from the 5D4, naturally my perception with the megapixel driven me to choose R5 for it's higher resolution. Like you, I do missed the optical view finder when shooting with flash. Rolling shutter, banding and battery power consumption are some other areas I need to think of when shooting with R5. Oh, by the way, If I am not mistaken, at 36:18 and 39:27, "Exposure Simulation" should be the correct term rather than "Exposure Compensation. Once again, thank you so much Vanessa. Your work is amazing!

I shot an event today with my R6. Used the Tamron 35-150 f2.8-4 and a Westcott FJ80 on camera. I set my aperature to F4 so that as I was zooming in and out my f-stop would not change. I also shot M Auto ISO. The event was in a very dark room with a lot of dark wood so I was worried about high ISO and noise. The R6 killed it! A lot of my shots were taken at 6400 ISO and had very little noise. Definitely boosted my confidence in this camera. I normally shoot wildlife and landscapes. The R6 was my upgrade from the 7DMII. The auto focus, eye tracking, burst rate...excellent! FYI, my backup camera is a 1DX. It's in a drawer collecting dust. :)

I have bought an R6 today on Amazon to use as my 2nd camera along with my awesome R5; delivery in 4 days from now. My main use for this would be for birds and wildlife; using the Canon 100-400L ii + a canon 1.4 teleconverter. I am quite sure that 20MP would be good enough, as we have all survived for so long with the 7D Mkii and even lower MP models. Looking forward to shooting with my new toy. :) Thanks Vanessa for a fantastic session.

I don't like peanut butter but I absolutely like your hardwork and professionalism. I think this is a better review of the Canon EOS R6 than anyone or anywhere else. And I don't think it can be done better.......from a wedding photographer's perspective. Of course 'better camera' is a subjective topic but you laid out your use case perfectly and a professional with a brain can easily decipher useful info from this. So thank you!

And since the world is going mirrorless, this appears to be the best camera for someone with quite a bit of Canon glass. Oh, I don't eat peanut butter. Crazy, I know.

As a 1DxII owner the really difference with the 1DXIII and R6 is totally Durability and weather related. You can drop the 1DXIII and it will still work. The R6 you might break the IBIS. The 1D series camera was designed for photographers who were going to be using the camera in rough conditions and who would be shooting a high frame rate. Not so much Frame Speed as frame rate. The first year with my 1DxII I should over 100 thousand images. I have had that camera since it came out and have never had the shutter replaced. It will be interesting to see what the life of the R series camera will be when it come to durability. All great gear from canon and all tools that can do what ever you throw at it. I can say this my R camera (that isn't sealed) has worked flawlessly in foul weather. I'm sure that these new bodies and all the new bodies to come will be great tools.

Having used the 1DX III professionally and owning the R6 the difference in IQ is non existent. Yes it’s not built like a tank but if you think it cannot take knocks then think again. The AF and IBIS are in another league to the 1DX III making getting keepers much much easier and predictable.

I've never had the autofocus on be fast enough to capture speedskating. I'm leaning towards the R5, as I frequently crop down the photos. And I'm a bit spoiled by the 30 megapixels in the 5D4. The fact that you shot a paid professional wedding with the R6 is more than enough to silence issues one may have about lesser megapixels than the original R. The difference with R5 would definitely be noticeable and More MP is always great but the benefits of the R6 having two affordable card formats over the R5 and the lower file size will greatly reduce overall cost and workflow time. Add to that the EOS R being quite inferior in features and more importantly ergonomic and buttons, the R6 does make a better case for itself. The only major issue I see as a crop shooter is the fact that adapting my crop glass even to the R5 might not yield the best resolution let alone on the R6. But that's something for you all to keep in mind

You're absolutely right about focus, it's so easy it feels like I'm cheating! I loved the AutoFocus improvement from the 5D Mk4 to the EOS R, but the EOS R5/R6 is another very noticeable step forward. Also using the ProGrade cards in my R5. They're great cards. I have the "Exposure Simulation" mapped to my "Favorites" menu so I can quickly turn it off if I'm using strobes. The only reason I didn't get the R6 was the lack of a top LCD display. I actually use that quite a bit, especially shooting with two bodies, so I had to go with two R5 bodies instead. Stuck around to the end and I have to say that I love peanut butter and honey sandwiches, tastes almost like caramel.

@@VanessaJoy well I have studied the specs again (and some other reviews) technically there are no great differences unless you are taking videos... since I am more on photography than videography the R6 does for me pretty much the same job as the R5 - then for me the only criteria I have to get my head around is the difference on Megapixel - and as you said as long someone is not doing huge banners six-foot-high (which is not my case), my present DLSR has 20ish, and that is fine - I am actually getting more my head around the R6 and maybe invest the savings in glass :-)

Thanks for the review Vanessa! I have an R and just bought the R6 based in part on your video.Not sure which one is going to be primary and backup. Hope IBIS is silent, because the sound of lens stabilization, which seems to run almost constantly in the R, upsets the critters I photograph. Hope R6 lets me turn on silent IBIS and silent shutter while shutting off whine-y lens stabilization. My favorite feature of R is manual focus guide, and whoever at Canon created it deserves a hug. ...By the way, I like to put peanut butter on doggy treats...what dog doesn't love peanut butter frosted cookies? :).

Thanks Vanessa. Just wondering if you used any form of light reflectors for the outdoor wedding photos at, for example, the 22min 05s mark?

I do for sure, but not in that picture you mentioned. Here’s a video on reflectors: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-05VnzDxuYpg.html

Here in Australia the R5 is over $5500 (not to mention the crazy prices for the lenses) I have a 5Ds and a 5D3 and a 7D and really the choice comes down to what else I could do with my $$$ to progress my shoots - studio time ? Travel to a great location , models MUA's , Lenses , lighting gear ... Props ... all these things might get me better shots than a new Camera - even one as capable as the R6 and R5 Great video @Vanessa thank you !

You are right the focusing system is the same, they have the same amount of phase detection, but they use the normal pixel for the AI-People/Animal detecting and the eye detection. The R5 has more pixels, the R6 has more contrast in the less but larger more sensitive pixels. You have to say where the difference might be, I assume in lowlight, the bit higher contrast of the R6 may be better, but not so much that it actually is feelable. But what would you say about the lenses? They dwarfed the camera and the lenses are growing (28-70f2 or 85f1.2 are larger than before on a smaller camera). The R6 has a better contrast/line resolution than the 26 MP predecessors however the R has a bit more but not so much as the 30MP would expect you to have. I found the adapter working perfectly, but the handling is not perfect as a lens like the 24-70Lf2.8 is front heavy and the camera is small to keep up with the weight distribution here (but the pictures are great and autofocus is better than with ever STM RF lens.) I used it with a current Godox flash and the pictures are perfectly lightened (distribution, shadows smooth, color natural and on the point)

Thanks for the review, upgrading Now full frame camera, since the original EOS R is much cheaper, is it still worth it to buy it, or the R6 is the way to go?

Is there any differences in editing the files between the r6 & R5? Does your preset work the same on both or do you see a difference?
@VanessaJoy

There’s definitely a bit of a difference since the R5 produces a file that’s twice as large. But my presets work the same on both as far as what I see from them

Hi. I seen many comments, videos about R6 colours being worse out of the camera compared to R5, I don’t really care about resolution but many times I used jpegs straight from camera. Is it worth it to pay more for R5 for that reason?

Just subscribed. Thank you for the review. I like my PB melty on toast. My 7 year old Rebel T4i just broke - shutter stopped flipping. It still seems to work if I could only get in there & remove the broken shutter so it stops blocking the sensor. But it’s a good excuse to get something new. I took a good 400K/10TB photos/video with it, so money was well spent. Looking forward to watching your other videos.
@VanessaJoy
@VanessaJoy 3 года назад
You might be able to replace the shutter. Have you sent it to Canon?
@wallymoon8619
@wallymoon8619 3 года назад
@@VanessaJoy Thank you very much for your reply! I assumed Canon didn’t fix such old cameras or it would not be cost effective. My T4i pkg is really feeling its age - super slow multi-shot (1-1.5pics/sec) & 3 exhausted batteries. Shhhh, I need my excuse to my wiser half to get new stuff! LOL My Rebel XSi body & kit lenses still work, but it was impossible to get sharp images on Sports mode w/o a tripod & setting the timer. Salivating for IBIS 🥵.

I did the same thing. I use the R6 with out the grip to decrease the weight. The battery is awesome for still. I shot 1320 pics on one battery at a wedding 3 weeks ago. It’s also a lowlight monster

I have question, just bought R5($4300) with RF 24-70 f2.8, unfortunately not able to get any sharp images at all,and find out My R5 r5 sensor misalignment, I’m not sure is really misalignment or because not latest firmware , I’m thinning return my R5 and buy new R6 or just replace with another R5, any thoughts? Thanks

The 1DX III has an optical low pass filter. The R6 according to Canon has a non-optical low pass filter that is built into the sensor. I assume that means a digital filter, but they didn’t make in clear on their website.
@set3777
@set3777 Год назад
The R6 has an optical low pass filter TOO. The R6 has the same sensor and the same DIGIC-X processor as the 1DX III. Since it is not feasible to have IBIS in DSLRs, only R6 has IBIS and 1DX III has not.

I have no problem with AF with Tamron 150-600 G2 and Samyang RF 85 1.4. It works very good I had good expirience with my son’s M5. I bought R6 and problems witth back and front focus with Tamron disappeard. Unfortunately usb docks are assencial for firmware update. I had one for Tamron (AF adjusting for my 7D). Samyang with new firmware works with IBIS. I haven not checked shooting rate with a stopwach but the rates are radther proper 12/20.
