Canon R6 FW video update TESTED: I'm switching from Sony a7S III! 

I love these camera influencers switching brands every 18 months. So realistic.

4 months later. Switching from the Canon R6 because of overheating and 30min recording limit. 😏😂😂

One more advantage for the canon: if you all use EF lenses, you get built in ND filter and you get to swap lenses with EF cinema cameras

Just updated my R6. I'll have to test out clog3 later. Excited. I haven't lost any data from an SD card yet, but all it takes is one time and it can ruin a lot. Thanks!

After updating my R6 yesterday, I changed from C Log to C Log 3 today and I could immediately see the difference on the LCD! I can't wait to actually grade the footage. As for redundant recording, it's a great feature, long overdue. I'll have to set that up.

👌🏽 Dual recording, good image, unlimited record time, zero overheating even in 120fps 10bit on a 98° day, lens selection is on point. This video reminded me why I bought the fx3 in the first place great video man! 🙌👊🏽

My only Sony cam is the ZV-1 and I thought that primitive touch screen was only there because I had such a cheap model. I had no idea top of the line Sony cams also couldn't touch to change ISO and other settings. That's just.... Wow

Tony… if you could only pick one camera to last you the next 8 years….what would you buy? It’s a fair question, because that’s the position most enthusiasts are in. Because it’s not our source of income, we don’t have the luxury to make changes like the pros.

*very important and something everyone seems to be missing because you'd think you could just do it is: can't save video setting to c1,2 or 3. So when you want to film slomo, you have to go into the menu, enable it, back out, change your shutter speed. Take alot of time when shooting action.... Great video!

R6 firmware update == YEA!!!

I was super stoked to get the firmware too, I recently upgraded to the R6 over the R. It was already a great upgrade but now it’s even better. Can’t wait to try the CLog3 footage too!

It's 3am, just got home from shooting a wedding. I see this. I update. Tomorrow's wedding will be awesome getting to use CLOG3 and dual recording now. Thanks Tony!

you will still have the A7S3 as your back up camera , it was your working go to for a year and Sony has done awesome considering that have only been in the DSLR camera business since 2005 versus Nikon or Canon

Sony A7siii still the best. Flip screen, EVF, no recording limit. Form factor. I feel like a kid again with it - makes making movies just plain fun.

Cool. I picked up the R6 6 months ago.

No one is talking about the THOUSAND DOLLAR price difference though! If the Canon can come CLOSE, it's worth it if you're starting fresh or upgrading from something really old. Only reason I didn't go with the R6 was because of the initial overheating. Now, I'm re-thinking.

30mins record limit is still a deal breaker for me!

R5 needs dual recording now. I understand it can't do 4k/120 or 8k dual because of the SD slot but at least 4K 60 should be able to dual record.

I just left Fuji and jumped to the Canon R6 and 24-105 f/4. We are still getting acquainted, but since I primarily shot stills I really didn't consider video capabilities in my purchase. Sounds like I may have more camera than I realized, and isn't that a pleasant change.

Great review - thank you! Have you compared the A7siii with Catalyst stabilization against the R6? I don’t use a gimble because Catalyst is a great stabilizer

R6 is a excellent camera plus if you film in 4k 30 or 24fps the battery will die before any overheating issues. 4k60 will eventually but you really need to be trying to make it over heat. At least this has been my experience. I still believe canon could up the overheat limit as they are way more cautious than Sony when it comes to heat. Ofcourse if you record to a external source this is all a mute point. I am very happy with my r6 and it’s becoming a better and better camera with every firmware update.

I got the r6 a few months ago and I love it. I mostly only shoot stills but I'm wanting to try video soon. I've never tried doing any c-log before and I have no idea how how to start. Can you make a video on the basics or recommend where to start?

The only SD failure I had corrupted the files on both cards, not just the bad one. Having the extra card was of no help.

Prediction... when sony later this year releases its A7mk4 we will see a video... "why im switching to sony"... :)))

Very interesting. As an apsc sony user (switched from canon) I miss the interface. I would love to upgrade to FF that has 4k 120p or 60p min. Under £2k is the price tag... so I sit and wait for the Sony a7iii follow up, a7c is same as a7iii, nothing extra. Then then r6 suddenly, gets an upgrade... though arguable, has this changed for me, I dont use 2 slots as a RU-vidr. Still closest to the mark. But RF glass is expensive... as is sony, and a lack of lenses with IS/OSS ....and that got my attention with the stabilisation piece. I will do more research. But sounds promising. Thank you.

Even in the studio I rarely go over the 30min record limit on my M50. Especially now that I have been doing this for a while, I'm able to keep on track easier and stay within the recording limit and most likely only use half the record limit. I have ZV1s that I don't need to worry about record limits, but it hasn't been an issue. For my use case, I doubt I will ever upgrade cameras from what I'm using especially since I'm not using it professionally but only for my RU-vid channels which could work just fine with just using the phone. How is it that phones have no issues with recording video and photos onto their memory while cameras are still having issues? Even removable memory should still be stable enough not to have issues. I think camera manufacturers need to rethink their implementation.

In order to eliminate overheating turn off the LCD and evf and use only ninja. It should help. There are already some videis about it.

Recording to BOTH cards is why I moved to sony for my video - but I still kept my canon glass in the hope one day, one day I could record Clog3 to both cards. Now I just have to choose between the R5 or the R6, but I will have to adapt my lenses for now. This is a fantastic FW update.

And the R6 makes a decent camera too. Not a one trick pony like the A7SIII. I really wish they'd get rid of the 30 minute record limit though. Maybe effectively it won't make a difference due to heat but it just needs to go away.

Wow my R6 just got way better for video. I've been shooting videos handheld and haven't used my gimbal since. My only concern was the 1 SD card recording and that's fixed as well as the addition of Clog 3. I am considering getting a ninja V for the unlimited recording, no overheating and extra video features but non of my gigs are requiring that lever of production right now. The R6 is now by far the best camera quality/price for most people.

Why is nobody talking about Sony's gyro stabilization? Afaik that is not available with other manufacturers. Of course, it adds one additional post-processing step for the Sony, yet your stabilized final footage even far outperforms gimbals, from what I have seen in tests, as I don't own a compatible Sony model. I'm just wondering why maybe 5 % of reviewers even mention this feature?!

R6 is a clear winner in the stills game. Now its video capabilities have gotten better :)

If you're set up for it (HDR monitoring card) give the PQ "instant HDR" a try

finally canon actually beat the best of sony in video through their regular imaging camera!......thats the power of canon, canon doesnt need to make separate video centric cameras....and now the white elephant in the room......rich people problem....chelsea jumping systems from nikon to olympus to sony to canon to fuji to pentax to ricoh to i dont know what!..........tony jumping systems on basis of firmware udpates........ lets see when next firmware udpate comes from sony or nikon or fuji......i believe he will even jump to olympus if they send a new firmware update!.......btw i m a canon fan so i dont mind these both coming over to canon system :D :D :D :D

I find it frustrating on my R6 that I can't connect an external monitor and record internally. Fine if I have my external recorder but I'd love to just have an external monitor on set. Fix that Canon, please...

Canon deliberately locking out features is exactly why I wouldn’t go back to Canon. I put up with ‘years’ of that BS and had enough. And currently they don’t have any features that draw me back. As for using log footage when shooting a controlled talking head RU-vid channel… why would you? It’s not needed to try and recover extreme contrasts. So yes, you don’t need c-log or s-log in that scenario. S-cinetone is fantastic! And active stabilization works great, don’t kid yourself. If you can’t hold a camera steady while using active stabilization, there is something wrong. And if you’re jumping around like a monkey, yes, you’ll need a gimbal or Catalyst Browse. And I don’t believe that Chelsea can only hold a gimbal for 2 minutes. She’s likely stronger than you are! Hahaha… Whoa, there’s an episode I want to see! The arm wrestle between the two of you! Lol 😂. I’m putting my money on the amazing Chelsea! She has the unstoppable drive to take you down. …. Ok, my joking around is done. Go shoot with your Canon, now that they have decided to let you have some more features. They are so kind! Lol

People are usually ranting not about RU-vidrs switching cameras, but RU-vidrs saying that some cameras no longer rock. It's even more vibrant when a person purchased a camera based on RU-vidrs recommendation 😁

I changed from canon to sony specifically because of the lack to duel record. Not having that was un acceptable for pro work. If they allowed 3d party lenses i would move back.

Hi Tony, There is a photographer on youtube that claimed no heater problems on Canon when he turned off the screen and viewfinder within three minutes of starting recording of video. u can record unlimited video, on R5 & 6 just shut donwn the EVF and the screen use an external monitor and u good to go for days

Tony, the ISO 100 vs. ISO 100 test results are mute once you go to higher ISO values. The a7Siii has what appears to be a dual gain circuit and cleans back up to base ISO levels of noise at ISO 12800. Give it a shot and make a quick side-by-side test under the stars. Both in video and in stills A7Siii produces a cleaner image in low light.

There's no way on earth that someone could convince me by saying that the R6 is better for video then the a7siii!

I had a compact flash Sandisk fail/corrupt the images twice over a two month period and luckily had a 2nd slot. I called Sandisk for a replacement and they said it has to fail three times! This was 5 years ago. I just through the card away.

OK Tony, what about Custom buttons? Why R6's Custom bottoms are not available for video? Sony cameras allow to use them for both photos and video.

Copying in two cards will not protect bad files. It will only safeguard your backup files. The system works like one card works as the backup of the other card, now if there is any bad sector related corruption in one file the same corrupt data will also be transfeted to the second card, basically will not protect your data from being corrupted. Unless you configure your cards like RAID 5, as in computer servers Where multiple drives provide redundant data storage in synch with one another, but multiple drive give you storage capacity of one drive. But in cameras cards work as a backup of one another.

Nice talk and important topic! Good to see Canon added dual slot recording for video. Hopefully Nikon will do it too. I also complain a lot about the 30 minute per video clip limiter most camera companies have left in their cameras. It can be super irritating in longer form recordings when I have my cameras hooked up to AC power.

RE Stabilization, doesn't the R6 crop 4k? As a result, does it do some software stabilization? Also, have you used Sony's Catalyst Browse to use the gyro metadata? IMO, you can get better performance than any in camera stabilization. Sure, it's a bit more work in post though support will only get better. And yes, it will crop a little too though you can tune the amount.

Hang on here, Tony. Are you saying that the 20MP sensor on the Canon is better in lowlight than the 12MP sensor on the Sony? That would mean that if one can do without the 4k 120p and limitless recording on the Sony, one could have a Canon "lowlight monster" for $1000 less than the Sony?

Finally someone willing to call out the A7s3 for not being as good in low light as everyone thinks! It looks so good if you switch it to 12,800 but anything between like 2,000 and 12,800 is too noisy and that's a big range of ISO that's just no good. That basically means if I'm in even slightly low light conditions I have to go all the way up to 12,800 and then put an ND filter on to drop the exposure back down. What a pain.

Pls give ALL-I to 1080P with clog3. That is all I asked for..
