Hi Rob, I have a American High School Football game this Friday to shoot. It's 3pm in the afternoon so sunlight should be good. Should I bring a 70-200 f2.8 or a 100-400 f4.5-5.6 lens for my R5?

A good battery saving trick - my M-Fn button is set to turn off the screens. Very quick and easy to hit once I'm done shooting and saves a ton of battery. I've almost got 1000 shots on a single battery when using that method plus eco mode, etc. Great review, either way!

I too find the R6 the best camera I’ve ever been able to afford as a serious amateur. Along that train of thought, I have 6 nice L lenses I acquired for the D5 Mk III and Mk IV I’ve used over the past 6 years. In the time I’ve had my R6 I’ve seen no reason to upgrade to the seriously expensive R lenses. I have a friend who has replaced several of his EF ‘L’ lenses with the comparable (in focal length and aperture) R lenses. We get together frequently to compare photos and he’s already regretting the major money he put out for the R lenses he purchased when compared to my photos using my EF L lenses. There’s a caveat to this point - neither of us are professional photographers or videographers so we don’t shoot as much as a pro does nor is our income at risk for the loss of a ‘perfect’ picture as opposed to a merely excellent one. In several thousand shots in the past year I’ve had some shots I was less than fully satisfied with but these were each my fault, not the fault of my R6. This is a great camera for the serious amateur and probably for many pros. I’m believing that even if my budget would have tolerated the R5 I would still have regretted the cost of those pricey high cap super fast CF memory cards, all the extra storage capacity I’d need for my PC etc for the shots where the extra cropping advantage would be needed. I can satisfy most of those situations with better preplanning the shot setup values - I.e. a higher f stop, a lower shutter speed and or ISO. I’ve had fine cameras since my late teens (a used Leica M3) then a Nikon F in the mid 1960’s, then more recently a Canon 5D Mk III and later a Mk IV. This R6 beats them all in quality, features and consistent results. I hope that Canon will change the few shortcomings with software updates and price reductions. They will be denying themselves of much of the amateur market out there who will never shell out the price for those R lenses or that wildly overpriced dual battery accessory. $500 for one of those OEM can only appeal to a pro who can write it off his taxes.

My favorite part of the R6 for my work? The 28-70f2 -- there's literally nothing else like it and I love the way the lens renders images not only at f2 but often when I'm shooting at f11. The R6 has surprised me by how much I like working with it and the quality of the files it produces. I have the battery grip for one of my R6 bodies and I agree about the price/I was lucky to find it used but one thing they got wrong on it: the joystick on the battery grip is a little awkwardly placed.
@JM7284
@JM7284 3 года назад
Completely agree. I thought the R6 was going to be one of my sports bodies only but then I started using it for portrait work instead of my EOS R especially after I got the 28-70. Now the R6 is my everyday everything camera (sports, portraits, video) and my EOS R is my studio sit on a tripod camera. I've entertained the thoughts of getting another R6 and having that as my second sports body instead of my Sony A9II (long story...but yes I shoot both Sony and Canon). Also agree about the joystick on the battery grip...it is meh. In short I love my R6, the CRAW files are outstanding, and when coupled with the 28-70 it is lights out.

I have Canon R6 and before watching this video and saw your video thumbnail, I thought did I miss anything about this camera about its negative sides. But after watching the video I am very happy that there is no serious bad or only bad things about this camera. To Rob, bad sides are: 1-Bettery grip is expensive (most users including me don't use it) 2-Screen is always on (not a big issue, and you can turn it off or set it up for view finder only.) 3-Eye piece is fixed and can't be moved (very very minor issue) 4-Can't be plugged network cable (since it has wireless connection you won't need it. To me, it is positive point for R6) Although I don't share the same opinions about Canon R6's negative sides that Rob talks about, I liked his video which was quite informative (pressed thumbs up). Overall, I am quite happy with the camera and right now along with Sony, Canon is the best in the market.

I bought my R6 for video, but I love it for stills too. My suggestion about the LCD: just flip it around to the closed position if you're using the EVF. That turns the LCD off. When the camera is idle, the EVF will also turn off. That should save a lot of battery life, which for me is the R6's biggest weakness. I hope Canon can develop a more powerful battery soon.
@alansach8437

More likely they will release the R6 Mark ii with improved battery life! Keeping the camera in eco mode also helps.
@JohnDrummondPhoto
@JohnDrummondPhoto 2 года назад
@@alansach8437 Eco mode means the EVF refreshes at only 60 Hz, which some people find hard to look at. As for an upgraded battery: good luck. Canon released the R5C that uses the same battery and eats them like tic-tacs. The battery can't even power the lens when shooting 8K/60 RAW; you need an external power pack for that feature. Still a great camera but a massive power cripple.
@roblangejr
@roblangejr 3 года назад
Based on your experience with the R and R6, I upgraded to the R6 recently and I agree on all your thoughts. Two things:1) have you tried dual back-button focus? I have AF-ON set to single point focus, then the * button as face detect focus. No need to go to the menus to switch, just move the thumb. 2) in Red Menu 7 "shooting info disp" lets you choose how the info button cycles through the back screen and the viewfinder. For example, my back screen usually has the settings shown, thus not using as much battery) but I can cycle to plain live view and detailed (icons and the level) live view. My viewfinder cycles through "plain" live view and more-detailed live view.

R6 shooter here: for the auto viewfinder to LCD switching, I map a button to manually switch between them since I usually shoot through the viewfinder and use the screen as my AF point select and drag, and disable auto switching by selecting either screen or LCD. I find auto switching to slow or unpredictable, leading to missed shots. There is also a battery grip with Gigabit Ethernet, though a bit pricey!

I rented recently an R6 for a day to cover a Europa League soccer match. I used it as my main body with the 400mm f4, DO IS USM MKII and the second body was the 1Dx MKII with the 70-200mm f2.8 IS USM MKII. I had very limited time to set up the R6, watched your RU-vid videos and did not read the manual as most of the menu is similar to the 1Dx MKII. Size & handling: light weight body and made a small and very manageable size combo with the 400mm DO. Felt good in the hand, easy to carry ( I used to lug around a 1Dx MKII + 400mm 2.8 IS USM MKI and the difference is night / day) solid but definitely need the grip. Being used to 1D bodies the R6 felt a bit ‘toyish’. AF: I used the face detect which is useless for soccer as it chooses the player it wants. Switched to centre point assist, which worked fine. Tracking is excellent and sticks to the players. It is a pity that the R6 do not have the option to optimise the AF-On and * button for different cases like the 1Dx. Used case 4. Frame rate: very good as long as the battery stays over 50%. Big disadvantage. I used mainly 1st curtain and mechanical. The electronic shutter is not good to me as it is silent and I want to hear how the camera clicks. Battery life: not very good. I changed battery after half time to keep the frame rate high. That's where the grip with 2 batteries will come handy. EF lenses: flawless operation with the adaptor. No need to buy expensive RF glass. One thing that annoyed me is that the IS stays on all the time as opposed to the 1Dx MKII that the IS kicks in with the press of the shutter button. would that wear out the IS motor very fast? Could that be sorted with updated software, I wonder…. EVF: Not my favourite coming from DSLRs. Going from dark LCD screen to bright EVF was not ideal. In addition, there is a lag when viewing photos / looking at the LCD screen and going back to the EVF. Missed a couple of action sequences. LCD screen. Stays always on. Is this normal? Can it be switched off? It’s like having live view on all the time. Buttons: a bit confused as I wasn’t familiar with the different layout to the 1Dx. Image quality: Excellent! I was using the same settings like the 1Dx i.e. 1/1,000, f4, ISO 6400 and it is clear that the R6 is using the 1Dx MKIII sensor. Less noise than the 1Dx MKII for the same settings. 1 stop I’d say FTP transfer: excellent. Fast and integrated into the body. Well done Canon! Buffer: Excellent, doesn’t fill up even shooting JPG/RAW (main reason I will be selling the 1D MKIV)

I'm really happy with my R6. I'm also a (amateur) sports photographer and I shoot a lot of basketball and volleyball. High ISO is also a necessity when shooting indoor sports. With my R6 I can use high ISO and the image quality is still more than sufficient. I find the 20 megapixel a big advantage instead of the 45 megapixel of the R5. The photo cells are bigger with the R6 so more light photons can hit the sensor, thus increasing picture quality. For me this is a big plus. I also don't need to crop too much so picture quality stays perfect for publishing on Flickr or FB. For me the only downside of the R6 is the placement of the Rate button. With my 7DII it's on the right side and I can easily change rating on the fly. But with my R6 I need to use my left hand for rating photos. So for that short moment when I do this, I can't take pictures because I have to use both my hands. But for me that's the only downside. I absolutely LOVE this camera. I use this with my Canon EF 70-200mm F/2.8 L IS III USM for shooting basketball and volleyball. I use the mechanical shutter so I don't have problems with the rolling shutter.

I've done side by side comparisons of dozens of raw files taken with the R, R5 and R6 with the best RF lenses, all taken at the same time and when I output to 45 MP in camera raw, in a "blind" comparison I can't readily identify the R5 or R files vs the R6, zoomed at 100% magnficiation. If I output the R6 files to 45 MP after using the Enhance feature in camera raw, the R6 files will actually look sharper and more detailed (when viewed at 100% on a 5K monitor). I sent files to graphic designers and most picked the enhanced 45 MP R6 files as being the sharpest and most detailed.

One I feel you missed: The articulated screen makes it possible to shoot 'strange' angle shots (bug eye view/over the head) much more easily BUT this can be a problem in bright sunlight. I do not shoot sports (but still like your channel!). For bug eye view my answer is working under a dark cloth like the old time view camera operators but shooting while holding it over your head from the back row or to get a high angle is still pretty much working blind. Increased brightness via a sensor would just waste battery so I am not suggesting an easy fix. Also: If the back screen on all the time bothers you, just fold it in against the camera and open it only when you actually need to 'chimp' more than you can do through the viewfinder. I did reset a button to restore the focus point to center and have to open the screen to change some settings but the requirement to have the screen on al the time is a choice you make. It would be great to have a button that would turn the screen off and on with one push just like the 'to the eye' sensor and that would be possible in a firmware upgrade. Tell Canon. Great video (even if you shoot sports rather than what I shoot).

What a regret! Despite loving Fuji's colors (yes, we notice the difference at the time), I miss Canon's ergonomics and usability. I think I will keep the X-T4 for street photography and buy an R6 for more professional work (photojournalism and clients). It looks like a perfect camera. Or almost perfect. I have camera setup C1 sports, C2 wildlife and the spot button assigned to animal eye. Works well. One thing to remember if you use C1-3 that those settings are for that mode only, if then you switch to TV, AV ect your setting all change. I would add one more dislike about the R6 camera-no voice recording. As a sports photographer, I frequently need to make voice notes on the image frame so I can retrieve the verbal notes using Photomechanics. The 1DXs have that feature and it is a must-have when writing descriptive captions for those photos sent to the media wires. The R5 has a recorder, but who needs 45 MP images for sports and a bit more degrading on noise? Facial eye recognition is a challenge for action sports, unlike other events such as weddings. It's hard to make a crescent wrench do everything! Ha

It is a way to stop that back screen. Choose a body buton and set for switch between VF/screen (customize buttons in camera meniu). This way the screen will stay off and only de viewfinder on. This apply to EOS R but I'm pretty sure it will work with R6.

A camera of this class never historically had LAN ports, so while I understand the frustration of not having it, it's also an unrealistic expectation for this camera class. Not even the much more expensive R5 has that, without the grip that is, which should also work on the R6 as the grip is interchangeable. Maybe that's why it's 400 pounds? That feature was always reserved for the flagships.

Hi Rob, I have an R5 but the menu’s are the same I think, I have my * button toggle between eye tracking and single point only so its really quick to change without taking the camera down. The button to the right of the * I have set to toggle one shot and servo. Hope that helps. Also agree the battery grips are shockingly expensive but I could not do without mine on long days and worth having. Also I love the fact that moving the focus point is really quick with the thumb on the rear screen (even quicker than the joystick for me) but I also use the feature of the joystick single click which returns the focus point to the middle if you have moved it.....such a time savers. 👍

Thanks for this video. The shutter on my second camera (which is a T7i, decent but not even in the same league as the R6) just died, and I've been going back and forth over whether to try and get a second R6 or pick up a used 1DXii (since they're currently going for about the same price). Wasn't thrilled about the fact that I'd have to also get completely different memory cards and batteries for the 1DX, but I wondered if it would still be worth it overall. But I think with this video you've convinced me there's not really anything the 1DX can do that the R6 can't, at least as far as what I would use it for, so it'll be a better move to keep everything consistent. Much obliged!

As others have said, you can customise some of the buttons to turn screen off etc. Unfortunately those buttons don’t work when using a wifi connection, the camera switches the screens back on when I’m downloading photos to my phone and that is a totally unnecessary battery drain. I’d also love to see a ‘DSLR’ mode where the viewfinder is only activated by the proximity sensor, but when you pull the camera away, the back screen doesn’t switch on. I know there are some options to customise how the screens work but this would be a good battery saver for folk used to only using a viewfinder.

Hey Rob. I'm heading into work so I don't have the R6 with me but there is in fact a way to set a custom button to toggle between the back LCD and the view finder. I had my depth of field preview button setup to do that (if I remember correctly) but I ultimately switched it back as it got annoying to constantly have to press the button to toggle back and forth. There is also an option to put the camera to sleep (which may not be what you want) but it turns the screen off as well. The negative is that you have to dedicate a button for these functions. It's worse than the EOS R in that the D-pad on the EOS R would allow enough buttons to set a ton of functions due to the D-pad being able to move in 4 directions. Also once you get the battery grip you'll have double the power so this may not be the biggest issue. On the matter of the battery grip and the LAN port, you can get the WiFi version of the R5/6 grip which has a built in LAN port but you won't be happy with the price. Only $1000. 😆🤣🥲😭

The eyepiece is removable, but it’s not like our 1Dx/1Dx2 click style, so it’s not really useful to remove for rain cover reasons. I also find that, for sports, images around the eyes are soft at longer focal lengths. The almost seem pixaled, just not crisp. Anything up close is sharp as a tack, but moderate distance, it’s rough.

in my view R6 is canons best camera at the moment. better than my r5. This modedial is better, u dont need to push it down and watch the small screen to see what mode u are in. this small shoulderscreen drains my battery and is of no use for me - and u cant deactivate it. so its quicker and easier to change modes on the R6. When i shoot weddings - its not very good to have the big 45mp files - needs more space on computer and more time to work with. i dont normally crop 40-50% of my pictures, and 90% of people watch pictures on small screens like mobile devices... R6 has little better low light capabilities like R5, too. i think this its more important than more resolution for most people in most situations... Its better to have 2 SD-Cardslots than just 1 and CFexpress (if u dont wanna shoot 8k Video). SD Cards are way cheaper and fast enough for 4k video and taking pictures... Battery Grip is no problem to me, because i prefer to take 2 batteries with my instead of a grip - grips make the cam havier and i prefer lightweight on wedding days. but i see that this could be a minus for some people - i just think the R3 is more aimed at sport shooters. The Screen is always on issue will be fixed in firmware - pretty sure... (perhaps already) Eyepiece - yea i dont know - could be a problem to some people... The LAN-Network is not on the side, because this camera is not aimed at sport photographers in the first place. with this feature the camera would have been more expensive. the same goes with weather sealing. A LAN connection is something only a very small group of professional sport photographers really need, it makes sense for canon to not include it here...

Hey Rob, great video. I’m an R6 user and all of your points resonate with me. One thought though, with respect to build quality, I wonder to what extent the sheer weight of the 1dx contributes to your impression that it is rather more robust. I think in our minds, heavy = strong, and maybe that’s fair, but I suspect that the R6 could take a bit of a beating.

Thanks for sharing! I was at the shop the other day had the R6 in my hand, and was gonna swap my R for it. The R6 was discounted €400 euros plus there was a €150 canon cash back, but it was the last day for it. For various reasons I didn't get it... Now I wish I did, but feel I can't do it until I get at least as good of an offer as I had then! :/

Great overview - and very much agree! Also have the R6 for now and am very happy for it. Don't think you mentioned the SD write speed - but I'm sure as a sports shooter you have noticed its very fast. Feel your pain with the rain cover. Will get the high MPIX R later as I'm a pixel hog, but I have used Gigapixel AI with great results so far when I needed some extra pixels to work with.

Unfortunately, the negatives pointed out are quite lame. Ethernet is old tech..u have wifi as replacement,Battery Grip extra even in a R5 or 5DMk4etc., If you're not able to switch off view finder, then enable power save mode..that should help you solve that problem. Also, you cannot compare R6 with 1DX..R6 can be compared with R,6D,5D MK4 or even with R5... All the positives are good..but negatives are not justifiable..maybe you can put it as good to have..
@RobSambles

Thats an excellent video as I have been thinking about the R6 for some time now! One question please - I understand that you only get the full 6 axis stabilisation if you have a native RF lens mounted. If you have an EF lens monuted via adapter (as I assume you do) do you notice any real drop in performance, such as slower times to find focus, and does teh loss of IS make a difference to you. Apparantly it reduces to equivalent to 2 Axis

Is there blackout in the viewfinder with the R6? When shooting the Nikon Z6II, it displays the last shot you just took for a fraction of a second, making it very difficult to track the action. Wondering if the R6 is similar in that regard.

Hi Rob, I enjoyed views and your take on shooting on a 1D body and then shooting on your R6, I got to the stage where my 1DX got left in the bag more and more so I sadly sold it on and I bought the 800mm and the grip. As other guys have posted, you can set the rear screen to turn off by setting a button to switch it on or off or you could set the power saving to ECCO MODE this will power down the rear screen (page 728 of the guide) another thing you could do would be to switch on the power saving option to 15 or 30 secs or better still close the rear screen ? Believe it or not the rear screen uses less battery power than the viewfinder. Regarding the lack of a LAN Network plug, could you not use the Canon connect app on a tablet or phone to upload your shots?

I’m curious if you’ve noticed any shutter delay/lag (the amount of time it takes for the shutter to fire after focusing) on the R6 vs the 1dx. I looked into the Sony a7iii for awhile but decided against it after hearing its shutter actuation is slower than that of the canon 5diii, the camera I’m currently using.
