I spent about 2 months with the Canon R6 and like many cameras, there were many things I liked, but there were also some disappointments. Who should buy this camera? Does it overheat? Find out in this video. Canon R6 - bhpho.to/2Su3xrT
I upgraded to the R6 from a 5D mk ii and have the same megapixels, yolo. The 5D mk ii is still a beast and can keep up quite well with cameras that came out 10 years after it!
Megapixels are not overrated. Megapixels equal resolution and resolution matters, a lot. If it didn't, these cameras wouldn't shoot in 8k. Are you still shooing in 480p? If resolution doesn't matter, why aren't you shooting in 480p still?
Wow great video and nice to finally hear an honest review covering the overheating issues and what's the point of buying a camera which overheats when using the higher 4k specs. Sheet I bought the R and used the savings on the RF 15-35!
thanks very thoughtful review. I like how you touch on the nuts of bolts of things you need to know if you are going to use it for either photos or video.
Great review. Just picked one up. As mostly a still shooter and random video clip shooter. This is perfect and a nice upgrade over my r. Too bad it wasn't priced the same as a rp. Can only dream. Keep up the great work
I really want to move away from the crop sensor (my 90D) to the mirrorless. The R6 seems to meet all my needs. Thanks for your clear and concise review.
That is a great take on the camera the canon r6 is a right buy considering the features on offer with some minor niggles... I agree with you on most counts... And yes if canon does not give us the fix consumers alike will look else where for better options.... Nice work 👍
Thanks so much. An excellent and valuable analysis. As a photographer I have only praise for the camera so far. I "downgraded" from a 5D MkIV but was well aware of my reasons for doing so and have no complaints. I have never really done much video work but recently I have been doing more. This has led to codec problems for me. I don't want to have to buy more software to be able to view the files I have filmed. I have no idea about video editing and I would feel happier sending files to an editor who doesn't have to have specialist software to edit my videos. I don't know if the original Canon R produced similar files. Any suggestions anyone may have in this regard would be most welcome.
Liked the review. I hope the video review of Sony a7c will come out soon, and please treat it as a new camera. Most reviewer on YT treat it as a repackage a7III. That's fine too, but it makes inexperience person like me confused.
Just like you said it’s a photo journalist or a go getters camera ....but I also think it’s good for RU-vid especially if you want quick turnaround, great review as always 👍🏼
I also found that you have to set shutter speed something like 1/200+ to get 20 frames per second. Anyway, my favorite feature is Crop movie mode, with 35mm 1.8 I can effectively get 55mm 1.8 macro, which is like 2 in 1, Love it. Also found that Highlight tone priority enhanced gives you same dynamic range as Clog but with a nicer highlight rolloff. Imo LOG is highly overrated. Thanks for video though, have a great day!
Thanks for the review. I really want to get back into cinemaphotgraphy for fun and to capture memories like vacations and camping. Right now, I feel like if they released a Canon RP MK II it would have what I want. Single SD card slot, 4K no crop, 4K 60P and somewhere around $1500-$1700. I still think the R6 is the best choice for me right now and have the money, but it's a big price for a camera as I am just getting back into the swing of things.
Thank you for watching. If you like the camera, I’d say go for it. I doubt Canon would put uncropped 4k 60 on cheaper cameras at the moment. Full frame 4k 60 seems to be a rarity in this price range.
@@HyunRalphJeong Thanks for the reply. I am telling myself that it's overkill but really I am just saying that because of the price... I have the money just being a penny pincher. Good to know though about the full frame 4K crop.
I think that following firmware updates, the r6 makes more sense now for video. It has C log 3, redudant recording on both slots and improved recording time before overheating. Usually, I think most peoplw should be satisfied with the record limit as in real lifez there aren't many scenarios that require uninterrupted 30min + recording.
As a hybrid shooter, I have to say I don't mind the reccording time limits. I figure if I was so into videography that this was an issue I'd be better off buying a pro video camera. Amiright?
R6 is an AWESOME camera. I liked shooting with A7iii. I LOVE shooting with R6. AF is just as good and can't tell difference in image quality. R6 is a homerun imo.
Really valuable insights, thinking of getting the R6 for my RU-vid channel. Just used my Huawei P30 but actually have a 5D Mark II with very good lenses. However I travel a bit and record food. Maybe a 50mm F1.4 for cool street photography. Do you think it would be good? Greetings from Hong Kong ☺️☀️
My biggest negative with the R6 is how it switches between photo and video, your unable to save custom video settings. This for me makes it very difficult to use for fast hybrid work.
I shoot surfing from the beach with my EOS R6 in 4k 60 movie mode. The issue I have is the camera constantly overheats, even in cool weather conditions while not actually recording video. It overheats just from focusing on the subject while waiting to press the record button without actually recording any video! I simply have the camera on and I am watching the viewfinder while waiting to press the record button when someone gets up on a wave. In an entire hour of shooting, I probablly end up with 3 total minutes of actual recorded video. Is it normal behavior for the camera to overheat while simply waiting to shoot? I have temporarily disabled the servo-af and it has no effect. It still starts the overheat countdown timer while simply just waiting to record. I am leaving the viewfinder on the entire time to wait for someone to surf. Is the viewfinder alone, enough to trigger the overheat or is it the constant focusing that the camera is doing while waiting to press the record button that could be causing this?
I've heard mixed reviews about the AF. Potato Jet said it was the worst he's seen in any Canon, and that the natural color tone of the camera was a lot warmer than normal. Still no redundant video recording. Still has a 30 minute limit. No All-I. Overheats worse than the R5. $2500 + an expensive native lens system that's still working on covering the basics. I'm honestly happy with my 90D right now. It's a workhorse.
I really didn't think the AF was "the worst" I didn't notice any problems with it. Colors always changed with every generation so it's not really a big deal. You compare every 5Ds they were always different. But everything else you mentioned, kind of disappointing.
So would you say the R is better to get if you want it for decent 4K + Stills? Based on price tag + specs?

Hey could you test something for me with the R6? I want to know if it’s possible to shoot a time laps with eye autofocus on? I would use this for self portraits. I use this method with my old 6D and magic lantern. I set up a time laps and every new shoot the 6D hunts for a new focus, so I has to stay on the right position in the frame and can shoot a lot of pictures of me without having a trigger or phone in my hand. It would be amazing if this method would be possible with the R6 and the eye detection autofocus, because i could move free in the frame without thinking of the focus, because the camera allays would search for my eye. Would be amazing if you could test this for me and give me a answer or maybe do a tutorial on your channel because I could imagine a lot of ppl could be interested in this method too. Best regards from Germany 🇩🇪😊🙌
I ordered the R6 a few days ago. One thing that I feel will be a major drawback for me is not having internal recording while outputting clean HDMI. I shoot events where I need to display on a big screen. I also want to be able to record for highlight videos and the R5 is a big step up in price for just that one extra feature. I don’t need the other features of the R5
One thing that no one seems to comment on is the quality of the image seen through the viewfinder with morrorless cameras. I've not tried one of the new ones, but I was never happy with electronic viewfinders in the past, preferring the optical viewfinder for its clarity.
If you use the camera's for what they are made for, than they won't overheat If you want to shoot only video, than buy a ciné or video camera, not a hybrid that is made for stills This is one of the best mirroless camera's out there, together with the R5 they are the best there is at the moment in my opinion I sold a part of my Sony gear, didn't disappoint me at all
R6. Is there a way to keep ON the 3x3 grid or electronic level while recording video? These stay on until the moment i press the record button, then disappear. My videos keep coming out with a tilted horizon. Thank you
On the R6 reviews I'm finding it difficult to find details on the viewfinder capabilities as far as panning a moving subject whilst in burst mode, is your view blocked by continuous previews and if so are you able to switch it off and if switched off is your subject visible real time ?
Great video discussion from a hybrid shooter point of view. Having to limit your video shooting waiting the camera to cool down is a no go for a lot of people.
On my 6DMarkII I can take about 2500 shots before my battery runs dry, though it really depends on extremely much factors. Like how fast am I shooting, which functions do I use and so on. So talking about battery life always, worried me, like it seems so little, but my experience is those numbers are never correct as I can shoot always more then mentioned. Though I do notice that the battery can go up quicker the longer you have the camera. Like I cannot get to 2500 shots anymore now with the same battery I had since I have this camera, maybe a max of 1500. Though still a huge lot compared to what's mentioned each time. So, even if I worry with the R6 on how much I can shoot, I think I will be fine. I totally will be buying more then 1, even if those batteries are more expensive then a lens nowadays.
Because of this overheating limitations BS from canon, i'm switching to Z6II from EOS 1DX... And i will keep all my L lenses because there is an amazig EF to Z adapter from Fringer that work very damn well.... Good job Canon.
I don't think it will sell at its price point, versus the 33mp Sony 4 just released. I think it should sell for $2100. I am disappointed it wasn't at leas 24mp too. 20 mp is not great for cropping in or switching to APSC mode for tele extension reach. The rest of the stills features are great but then most of the competition is too.
since have you mentioned canon 90D few time in this video , and since i Own one i would love take take your point of view about the 4k in this camera many say that 4k crop provides a better image quality than an uncrop 4k but after i put both on real life test i found no difference , which type of 4k do you prefer on this camera (90D ) . and thanks for responding.
On the 90D, based on my testing, the cropped 4K was a bit sharper. (my review is on my channel) but for things like RU-vid, it doesn't really make much difference.
@@HyunRalphJeong thanks for responding , i will definetely give it another test under diffrent light conditions to see again which one is better because based on the specs the crop 4k is better and also when the camera shows heating this means that its making an effort to give better results .
@@MonroesArtStudio i do have a 90D and i got R6 lately but the 90D will always stay my second camera for long 4k videos. i mainly got the r6 for the 4k60 and 10bit 422.
which camera would be better? Canon R6 or Nikon Z6II. the Z6II is totally new. but im right before to order something. right now i find Nikon has a better f1.8 lenses. The R6 has better auto focus. Dynamic Range would better on the Z6II hmm..very hard decision this year.. on the other side Nikon needs help to get on track again.. haha..
Is it worth more than twice the price compare to RP? Should I go for RP and get myself an extra lens and enjoy the compactness? I'm using 5D mark3 for years now, it still takes great photos but I hate the size and weight. It's the primary factor that drives me into mirrorless.
In terms of size and weight, I feel like they all feel quite similar with any full frame lens attached. But if you don't care about the extra features, definitely go with the RP and save $1500.
Good review thanks, expecting my R6 tomorrow :-) Was a tough choice between R6 and R5, but I don't think the 8K and higher mega pixel is worth the difference. I'll probably spend the extra bucks on the next generation. I shoot mainly stills and some small video clips 1-5min so overheating is not an issue. The R6 should work just fine, upgrading from APS-C
Something that still bothers me from switching to Sony from canon in 2017 was the lag when switching iso Ss and Aperature quickly. It doesn’t matter unless your in a fast paced environment for example on canon 5div it’s instant as soon as I hit that dial or crank it to go from f1.4 to f4 it’s instant. On my Sony’s it is not I was wondering if you or anyone reading this could compare them side by side and let me know if the canon mirrorless are instant or seem the same. Thanks
The EOS R when it first came out was a bit laggy time to time and quite buggy but it all got resolved with firmware updates and I didn't noticed any issues with the R5 and R6. It does take a little longer to start up compared to DSLRs but other than that, everything feels quite snappy.
@@felipeleoni that makes sense. So I understand the 30 minute limit must be really annoying for you. You would have to go back every 30 minutes to hit the record button again. Yeah I see that's not great over a 2 or 3 hour session. 📸✌🏻
Thanks for the review! I haven’t heard anyone talking about the over heating in stills mode slowing down the FPS to 6.8. I was wondering if you notice this happen if you were just shooting stills? For example if I was shooting a wedding (camera would stay on continuously) without any video is it possible for it to slow down? Or for that matter if its just sitting on a desk and kept on do you think eventually it would get warm enough that it would slow itself down. Thanks again have a good one!
Thank you, the camera only overheats from 4K video and it does not overheat from shooting stills. I really tried to make it overheat by shooting bursts for several minutes but it didn't happen.
If your recording time is a priority for you should get a Blackmagic or cine camera. A shot that last more than 30 minutes long is pretty boring I don't care how pretty it looks. For recording clips to create dynamic content this is perfect.
That's an unbelievable amount of shots you were able to get out of the battery, especially for an old one. Please explain how you were using the camera, must have been a lot of testing with the electronic shutter i'd imagine...
@@HyunRalphJeong I don't know mate, still seems like a stretch that you would have been able to achieve a shutter count like that in any kind of real world use scenario. What's your secret? Surely there's something your doing (or not doing) to really maximise battery life. Really, me and i'm sure countless others would love to know...
I rented an R6 for a weekend to shoot soccer and some casual stuff around the house. I got 800-1000 shots, and about 5 minutes of 1080 video and the battery was only down to 30-40%. Not quite as good as 2500, but still more than the advertised 300. The thing I did was to set it so either the viewfinder or the rear screen were on,and I could switch which one with a custom back button assignment. This was my first mirror less experience and it was driving me nuts with the auto switching. I also turned off the automatic image review, as I was trying to follow soccer and it gave a much more natural viewfinder experience, IMO. I was pleased though that the battery did well. It was one of the specs I was worried about. On a 5D3 the battery seems to last forever. Definitely not so with the R6, but also don't think I'll be changing it every 2 hours. I normally leave a game with 300-500 shots, so I thought I'd have to change once or twice during the game, but not so. And the high speed mechanical shutter worked the whole time as well.
@@bbasiaga That's all pretty intersting. I'm going to tweek the settings on my R6 as best as I can think of and see what kind of battery life I can achieve. Something tells me it's going to be a real challenge to get 2700 shots with 15% battery life left without spaming the electronic shutter in burst mode though...
IMO, Canon have produced the R6 to stop the migration of Canon users over to Sony. With the R to EF adapter a Canon user can still use all their old L glass. That is a big deal over buying a A7iii and replacing L glass with G Master !
The R6 seems to be aimed at getting Canon DSLR users over to Canon Mirrorless. The R5 is aimed at winning over customers at other manufacturers (e.g. Nikon). Judging by the huge viewership of R6-related reviews and all the comments people are leaving, it looks like a lot of Canon DSLRs are trying to decide whether to make the jump over to the R6.
20mp is too low for me (i like to be wow'd when zooming into images). prefer the eos r at 30mp, but i hate the ergos of the r and the r6 is much better in everything except resolution. prefer the r5 over the r but its too expensive, hard to justify.
huge megapixel count is severely overrated, at least for my preference. 5d classic and mkii still hold their value even with the plethora of camera available today
Agreed. I went from 5dii to Sony r series and I want to go back to Canon now. Can’t drop 42 to 20mpix though, and R5 too expensive. Want IBIS. Decisions.
I also thought so. still went with it and can tell you: there is almost no difference. I have sharper images then with my 24mp camera. by no doubt. this mp BS is completely not relevant to sharp images unless you blow up your images for time square billboards. and even then I would say that the Eos r6 will compete. the only issue is battery life as opposed to dslr. but there are solutions for that obviously. its a beast.
Remember mega pixels were the easiest way to explain quality to normal consumers. Professionals in ProSumers no that there’s so much more that goes into the quality of the image that megapixels alone. The sensor on the R is about five years old and it does not render nearly as well as a new sensor in the R6. Because of this the difference between the two is so minimal that most people can’t tell the difference.
I only wish the R6 was higher resolution 20 Mp seems a little low to me? I am mainly a stills shooter so the video aspects don't concern me that much. How does the R6 compare to the EOS 90d ?
I used 5D mark i (12MP) and iii (22MP) for a long time and never had problem with the resolution but that obviously depends on what you do with your photos. I think also because the R6 has better autofocus and sharper lenses, you might get more sharp images than with DSLRs.
I don't get why people keep saying 20mp is not enough when people shooing iDX for wedding for billboard for fashion for all kind of pro work is good enough. Unless you shoot landscape and blow up to full wall size...really do you need 26mp, 30mp, 45mp?
I'm still ok with my 7dmii for some reason. 🤔 Maybe next year though. As a pet photographer in mostly day/evening light with a 70-200 2.8 I'm no quite there yet . But looks interesting. 😎
In my eyes, when you want a good videocamera, you should invest in a camcorder/video/cinema camera, and not in an EOS system. Because those are made for photography. But that's me.
Ye, a bit overfocused in general about video capabilities of cameras made mainly for photos. Who records for more than 30min straight anyway? Would think most would record clips here and there when buying these cameras.
Is toch ideaal als je een apparaat hebt dat op beide vlakken presteert? Plus het gebruik van diverse objectieven, zodat je het dure glas niet voor één enkel doel hebt.
@@AzizSaidov-zh1np for me nikon z6II is more reliable with good image quality for stills and ok with the video capabilities and also works out cheaper compare to over heating and expensive canon r6 and r5...
@@AzizSaidov-zh1np Reliability that's why. and you don't have to pay 2500 for a 20mp stills camera. Common, R6 has great af and good ergonomics but they asking too much money for that. 2018, A7III has an 8bit video recording did you see any professionals preferring R6 over A7.
@@AzizSaidov-zh1np well i see your point and i partially agree. I believe either system is good and actually we are nitpicking here. Every person has different experience, and what works for me doesn't work for someone else. 👍✌️
@@sonicvboom I don't own one but I did rent one for two weeks. Although the eye-lock works admirably in well-lit situations, it hunts endlessly in very dim to dark environments. I tested it using the Sigma 50mm 1.4 art lens with the EF-RF converter.
Disappoint...most Sony no flip screen but the 7siii is very expensive and has drawbacks and better for video and the canons overheats crop and record time limit... Hope Rp replacement 2021 be better $999? I just have m50 for now but plan upgrade to ff eventually.
Question does the R6 overheat for stills like let's say around 36 degree Celsius and shooting pictures over 3hours obviously shutting it down occasionally whenever not in use does it overheat at all I will not be using it for video at all then what about it
I'm getting about 38 mins before it overheats in 4k60 (constant tracking of the TV). My recharge time is much different than yours also. I'll have to wait more than 20 mins before I can get 15 mins of record time. Sometimes it doesn't record the entire length even though it has time left. This camera is an update(s) away from being a great reliable run and gun wedding video camera. The quirks still need to be ironed out
@@HyunRalphJeong yes, firmware 1.1.1 recording in clog, to Lexar and sandisk UHS-II cards. I did notice that in 4k24/30, you can push the limit a bit more, but not so much in 4k60
Thanks for your thoughts on this. I've been following your reviews on the new Canon's compared to the Sony system which I currently own. I was very close to making the switch back to Canon, after trying out the R6, but in the end, I could not get over the lack in value the camera brings compared to Sony. I think the R6 should be at least $1999, especially for the 20megapixel sensor and limited 4K recording. I really enjoyed the stills photography experience and it's overall speed, but I feel like they don't have as many options on the market yet for the lens lineup, and the good ones are quite big, and in my opinion, negate the purpose of moving to a compact mirrorless systems, in the first place. I think this system is perfect for existing Canon users that held on, but for already mirrorless camera owners, I don't see this system bringing anything new or unique to the table. It is an extremely fun camera, and with I could buy it in addition to what I already have.
