Over the past three weeks I had the opportunity to test the Canon RF 100 f/2.8 L IS Macro in Costa Rica. This lens was used both during the day and at night on the R5 and R10. In this video I would like to report on my experiences regarding image quality, operation, SA control, autofocus and image stabilizer.

I've been using the rf100 for the last 18months, sensational lens. Macro is brilliant and also makes a good portrait lens also. One of my favourite lenses ever 👍👍

In the UK that lens is £1449!!! I can get it grey for £799. I think for macro work as you say a used EF100mm for a fraction of the price fitted on the R7 might be good (100mmx1.6 crop) so similar to your Sigma 150mm f2.8 with a FF. The focus stacking is great even works sometimes handheld. I decided to hang on a little longer to Canon recently got a R7 as I still have awesome Canon lenses. If the R5 II is just a minimal update ie no stacked sensor I'm think Nikon. For macro I'm tempted to go OM-1 with it's stacked sensor they come bundled with a good lens quite cheap recently. I'm seeing some great work with that camera and there is a new OM-1 II update about to be announced. Great channel deserve more subs.

Some absolutely stunning images! Would be great to see your handheld and tripod workflow (the rf100 probably has gone back to Canon now though). Canon absolutely need a EF 180 macro successor and the MP. I myself are more than happy with the EF100L macro. Enjoy Costa Rica

I have a similar setup R5 and R10, the latter with the 100-400. I love how light, cheap and sharp that combo is. I use it with a pair of Godox flashes with great results. One question, when bought the R10 i thought it would have the pre-capture feature like the R7 and R6II, but I can't find it. I should have done my homework better. Still like the camera though. We just came back from Panama and the birding was incredible. Thanks to fantastic local guides.

The R10 has pre-capture! You need to activate it in the menu 😊

they could of made the lens cheaper and dumped the gimmick SA feature that nobody will ever use

Maybe two versions? I know people that do use it in certain occasions

For me, the 100-500 is good enough for butterflies and dragonflies that I couldn't justify buying this lens. But, it looks to be pretty great a a dedicated macro. I bought the 35mm RF macro and hardly use it, because you'd need to get extremely close to the insects. That lens is actually pretty good for landscape!

Fabian the macro that I use is the Sigma 180 F 3.5 it's over 20 years old and with the adapter on the R7 it is a great combination for doing Butterflies and also caterpillars small insects like ants like what you're doing and especially on frogs .

Very valuable info. BTW, are there any problems with Sigma 150 on Canon R5/R10 ?

You can manually focus with the lens, but not while actively engaging AI Servo AF. With the camera in AI Servo, you can manually focus if you do not have focus engaged by shutter half press or BBF. Manual focus is available full time while in one shot. I assume that you were trying to manually focus while focus was engaged with the shutter button or BB. That said, I find the description of your setup problematic. You have AF on the shutter button for spot and you BB for animal eye. Why don’t you move to a dual BBF setup and remove AF from the shutter? Put the spot on the AF-ON and the animal eye detection on the * button. That way you will have access to either manually focusing or focusing by changing the lens to distance subject without the problem of engaging AF with the shutter button or worrying about the AF/MF switch.

Thanks for your input. I made another video about why I use this setup. I can’t recall a single time where I needed to stop my AF in the last two years (except when using this specific lens). So I really don’t see a single advantage in BB AF. In my setup I can use the *button to switch to a different shooting mode

@@FabianFoppNaturephotography There are several other buttons that you can use to switch to a different shooting mode other than the *. I don't know your entire process, but I can't think of any macro photographer who cannot use the advantage of stopping AF and focusing manually by moving closer or further from subject to fine-tune focus. As good as the AF works on the RF 100, manual focusing is still standard for macro work. Removing AF from the shutter is a major advantage for macro for this reason. Nevertheless, the ability to use MF while you are not engaging AF is possible with this lens. Your issue is setup-based. Taking the time to remedy it would have resulted in a better experience with the lens. Using resources to produce a video without having taken the time improve your experience seems somewhat unfortunate.
