Hi Jared,love watching your videos.ive got the 24-105mm lens,love it. What I’ve done on my cameras,I’ve changed the depth of field button to the crop button. So when I need a little bit more zoom I press the button and get a 1.6crop. Thanks for good advice and tips 🙏🏾👍🏾

Thank you for watching! That a great tip! Saves you from having to do a lens swap and miss the shot.

@@JaredHoymanfound your video doing research for lenses for travel. Planning a European trip for the fall. Thinking of the RF 24-105mm f4 (as a general walk around) and a Tokina 11-20mm f2.8 (for interiors, tight streets, big architecture). Also considering taking a Sigma 30mm 1.4 Art for candids/low light. All with a Canon R10 aps-c. Trying to be as minimal as possible, but don’t want to be left without the right kit. Major FOMO. Thoughts?

I've been skipping through the R series (R to R6 and now to the R6 MkII very recently). I got the RF 24-105 F4 L as the kit lens with the Canon R, and have kept it all and moved it to each camera. I have stuck with all the RF lenses, even though I got the EF adapter as part of my EOS R kit. When I decided to go to the R line, I sold all me EF glass (several L lenses) and started buying RF glass. So far I have the following RF lenses: 24 1.8, 35 1.8, 85 2.0, and the 100-400. My next is going to be RF 70-200 F4 L and eventually I'll probably get the RF 100-500 L. I've always loved the 24-105 L (had the EF version in the past), great all around lens, especially for candid and vacation shots. Going to the Med for 3 weeks soon and hope to come back with some great pictures. Keep up the good work!

You will love the 70-200 f4 RF. It is super sharp. My dream lens is the 100-500. One day!

Glad you had a great vacation! Anything to get away from the brutal winters lol. Have you ever considered the RF 24-240? Non L but possibly a great travel lens with that reach

I haven’t thought too much about it but many people including yourself are bringing it up. I should check it out. It would hit a huge focal range.

Jared, Love your channel. Keep up the good work! As for travel lenses, the RF24-105 is a great pic, but don't sleep on the RF24-240. More reach, smaller, lighter weight, and less expensive. I used to travel with my L-glass..... These days, I combine the 24-240 with my RF "Nifty 50" and it makes for a compact and flexible kit. This coming from a fellow Canon "fanboy" of 50 years and plenty of RF L-glass (including the "holy trinity") to choose from!

Hey Jared...always great content! It would be great to see your F2.8 vs F4 trilogy comparison!! Love the RF 2.8 glass but have been considering going to the F4 zooms paired with the RF 35 1.8 and RF 50 1.2 to help decrease the weight of the bag🙂
@JaredHoyman
@JaredHoyman 5 месяцев назад
I think that's a good idea. A lot of people, me included, do not need to be shooting at 2.8 most of the time. The weight of the bag and travel does make a HUGE difference. Not to mention when you have a light setup you are more likely to take it out to shoot than if you have a heavy one. I'll probably have to rent the 70-200 2.8 RF, but then I will have all 6 lenses to do a solid comparison with.

Hey Jared! Glad you had a great time with your family on vacation. Loved the video of your daughter biting the lime. Did something similar with my daughter except we used guacamole. The expressions are priceless 🤣 Have you ever used the Canon RF 24-240? Thinking of purchasing it to compare it to the RF 24-105 f/4 L and the RF 70-200 f/4 L that I currently have.
@JaredHoyman
@JaredHoyman 5 месяцев назад
That’s is funny! I didn’t even have to dare her she dared herself lol. About 11yrs ago I mistook wasabi and thought it was guacamole. My table laughed at me while my mouth was on fire. As for the 24-240 I have not tried it. I kind of forget about that lens but it would be a good one to test. Not that it makes a big difference with today’s tech but I heard it does major lens correction inside the camera. I would be curious since that would be the absolute only lens you need for vacation.

I have used the RF24-240 and purchased it after travelling with my RF 24-70 and 70-200 f/2.8L. Too heavy, and too much if trying to pack and travel light. It's one of my favorite lenses (I also do and love it for street photography) given its flexibility. I now take it with the RF 50mm f1/8, flash, and one of my R6 bodies.. I'm more than pleased with the results. Is it "L" glass? No. Does it require in-camera or post-processing corrections? Yes. The lens corrections do a fantastic job and, heck, I'm going to edit the photos anyway! I picked mine up on the secondary market in like-new condition for $600.........

I shot Canon DSLR for 20+ years and most L lenses didn't thrill me (had most of them). I used the 16-35 and 70-200 2.8 lenses, but the rest are all Zeiss ZE (7 of them). When I dumped my 5D4s and moved to an R and R5, the heavy zooms went away. I adapt the ZE lenses and I'm happy, but they stay in Missouri. I traded to a 14-35 ƒ4 and 70-200 ƒ4 for travel, with a fast 50 Milvus 1.4 in the middle. Funny, I just wasn't loving the 70-200 as I had since 2009 (many versions). I again traded the 70-200 for a 24-105 and, for what I use Canon now for, am pretty happy. I also live in Hong Kong half the year and shoot Leica with the same 7 focal lengths (go figure) on M10M and M10R. Unfortunately they aren't weather-sealed, so on a recent trip to Japan from there, I also brought an R5 with the 24-105. It rained a lot and I'm glad I had that combo. I'd do no better with the 70-200, maybe worse. Now I'm looking at the 100-500 to leave with and extend my Zeiss primes in the US, but I think I'm done with 70-200. For travel, its the 24-105 (and the Leica kits!).

Jared I have the F4 24-105 L lens like this. I was going to buy the F4 70-200 L, but I didn't. Cancel order. 😢 I have canon EF F4 70-200 L. It is heavy. Don't know what I should do!! Happy you stay off RU-vid and enjoy your vacation!

Maybe rent the 70-200 f4 RF and compare it to your EF not only in image quality but weight and feel too. The size is the reason I shoot as often as I do with it.

I have the 15-35 and 24-70 2.8 lenses (and that 70-200 f/4!) but I have always been tempted by the 24-105. How does the distortion compare between the two standard zooms? On the wide angle, I felt the 14-35 was doing A LOT of correction compared to the 15-35, but I don't think I've seen a similar comparison between the 24-105 and 24-70.
@JaredHoyman
@JaredHoyman 2 месяца назад
The distortion correction is nothing like the 14-35, but in all honesty the final image of the 14-35 makes me not care what happens behind the scenes. The 24-105 is a great lens and makes it easier for me to just pick one lens for causal shoots or outings.

I bought mine used and seems like new. I haven fully taken it out to get every bit of testing done, but a few shots could reveal an issue. I may have to return it as many shots are looking soft on my R6-II. I'm going to do some comparisons against my 70-200 f/4 and see exactly what's going on. I'm hoping I don't have to return it, but the few shots I took are not even close to being sharp. I'm pretty disappointed with it so far to be honest. I still want this lens, but maybe not the copy I have.

In comparison to the 70-200 f4 the 70-200 is sharper throughout the focal range than the 24-105. At least from my experience.

Excellent review Jared…. f4 is the way to go for me, don’t really need the f2.8 as it’s heavy and expensive. This is a perfect lens. One question Jared, do I give away my EF 24-70 f4 for this one ? I also have a 70-200 f4
@JaredHoyman

I would sell the 24-70 ef for the 24-105 f4 RF for sure. Is the 70-200 f4 Ef or RF? I have the RF version and it is super sharp and light.

Would the 24-105 f4 be the better option for a student/hobbyist than the 24-70 with the 70-200? I know that the 15-35, 24-70 & 70-200 are the "F2.8. Trinity", what constitutes the "F4 Trinity"? I hate the thought of having to invest over $6000 into lenses that whent there are more rational options for my situation...
@JaredHoyman
@JaredHoyman 16 дней назад
For a hobbyist I would highly recommend the F4 Trio. I use the 14-35 Professionally and Love the 24-105. I actually don't shoot that much with the 24-70 2.8 rf.

Best travel lens for outdoors, definitey. This, and the 50 1.2 for indoors and night time, and you're done. That said, a 35mm 1.2 or 1.4 would be suited even better than the 50 1.2...
@JaredHoyman

I agree! I’ve been holding out to see what canon does with the 35 L. It would be an easier lens to walk around with at night than the 50.

@@marknongkhlaw1674 Indoors, even my RF 50 1.2 is often a little too much on the long end. So the light vacation kit ideally would be 24-105 and a fast 35mm for me.

I’ll be honest, I hate this lens with a passion. Maybe it’s just my copy but it sucks beyond measure. Any live subjects end up looking dead. It’s like there’s hardly any data in the raws when it comes to skin tone. People come out looking gray and there’s nothing you can do about it. I find that this lens sucks the life out of everything you shoot. The RAWs were very unpleasant to work with. My 50 1.2 on the other hand… that thing is magic. The raws are just so easy to work with and skin tone always comes out looking lovely and beautiful.
@JaredHoyman
@JaredHoyman 2 месяца назад
No complaints on my end, but compared to my 70-200 rf f4 the 70-200 is amazing in contrast. I've always wanted the 50 1.2, but I cannot justify it unless it fall in my hands ;)
