Interesting lens! With some strange quirky features, but can see it'd be a good lens for all round beginners as well. Nice review mate, I like how you put the video broll together, very eye catching!

Funnily enough I recently got the Nikkor 24-200 superzoom lens - I love it. Not quite as sharp as the S-line lenses, but not far off considering the focal range. I see Canon have one-upped Nikon with the range on this one, but shame about the lack of weather-sealing. I think you said before, Canon don't really do it on the 'cheaper' lenses. Good review - really liked the shot at 3:25 too. 🙂
@LetsClickPhotography
@LetsClickPhotography 3 года назад
Thanks Robert - yeah that shot at 3:25 - I've been chasing a shot there for a while, this was another one of those chasers, finally got the real deal the other day.....sure it'll be in a vlog to come. I actually really wanted this lens to be suitable for me. I can live with a slight image quality loss for the gains in versatility and weight. This would have been a great focal length, but Canon and their ways (even at a £1kish price!)....and I expected it to be as well especially with the Nikkor 24-200 being weather sealed - the win goes to Nikon.

Great review Dave, whilst I might not be a Canon shooter it was still interesting. The other Old Trafford bit made me laugh, poor old City 😂

Thanks Andrew - I do like a good rib poke at City's expense.....all for Andrew Hamiltons viewing of course hahaha. Appreciate you watching Andrew, I know that these 'brand' led type of films can be a bit boring when you don't have the gear so appreciate you taking the time. Have you got anything due out anytime soon? Been a while since I've seen a video.

@@LetsClickPhotography The day job has kept me busy plus some family stuff so it was just a couple of shorts this last week. Got a couple of vlogs on the go at the moment, went out and took some shots for a lens review and at the same time did another vlog with the FZ82 (to keep the audience happy). Sunday I was out shooting Film with the MJUII so hopefully the images come back from processing ok!

i cant believe Canon are still putting out lenses without a lens hood, When your spending that kind of money i expect one and feel cheated for it not to be included its a bit of plastic cone, they mass produce and can only cost them pennies to manufacture ! Nice look and review of the lens though mate !
@LetsClickPhotography
@LetsClickPhotography 3 года назад
I know right - this is the great Canon rip off. Charging £50 + for a lens hood on top of the price of the lens is just daylight robbery - I get it at the lower end the nifty fifty etc but come on - grand for a lens and no lens hood! Cheers Lee for the comment mate, appreciate it as always :)

Thanks for the review. I'm now in two minds about the 22-240. I've taken up photography as a retirement hobby. I'm getting an R6 soon and am looking at RF lenses. Pretty much all of them are waaay out of my price league (and my capability as a photographer). This lens is still expensive at $1,400 AUD, but will it do the job of 2 or 3 other lenses, each costing this much or more?
@LetsClickPhotography
@LetsClickPhotography 2 года назад
Hey Marts, the lens is capable, versatile, lightweight and (as far as RF glass is concerned) reasonably priced. If you are looking for an everyday lens as you’ve mentioned, and aren’t too tempted to have it out in all weather conditions, then I think it’s worth it. The software makes up for the hardware deficiencies when it comes image quality and, as you’ve mentioned in your comment, you’re not doing this at a professional level, so I’d say it’ll likely do a great job for you.

Thanks for the review Dave. I am considering coming over to Canon. I have an SL2/200D for filming and I really like the features it has. I am considering switching because of the vari-angle touch screen. My stills camera doesn't have that and I am to old and fat to get down on my knees for shots with a low tripod. 😂 This is very helpful in considering what to get or not for that possible future purchase.
@LetsClickPhotography
@LetsClickPhotography 3 года назад
Thanks Walter, I've had the use of a vari-angle screen now across multiple cameras for several years now and use it all the time. Not just for filming, but as you mention, for the down low and up high shots.....it makes life so much easier. I must admit that when I use my Canon 5d mark iv I miss that feature incredibly. If you do decide you want to switch in the future and I can be of any help with info then do drop me a line. Over the years I've used most of Canons line up and am happy to share my experience with any particular body/lens.

Let me just put this out there, as much as I love Manchester, I absolutely hate Oasis. And people still bang on about them incessantly 25 years after their last hit. But I digress. Glad to were able to get some good shots at Old Trafford before being kicked to the curb, literally. Love the shot of The United Trinity, I have a couple of those myself! I completely forgot about the cricket ground, thought for sure you were headed to Old Bower Fold in Stalybridge for the 2nd ground. Looks like a perfect tourist lens. I'm not sure Sony has anything equivalent to that but if they do I think I will give it a miss. Looking forward to the 85mm review! Great video as always mate. Might get a few thumbs down on this one from supporters of the smaller clubs though 😂 Hope you are well mate, take care and chat soon!

I think Sony does do a focal range the same as this - not too sure what mount it is for though. I actually almost went to Altrincham football club tbh.....they probably would have invited me onto the pitch to film 😂😂 it probably is a lens for travelling with. I could see the benefits for that for space and weight saving. Thanks a lot mate. Now back to trying to put together this beast for next week .....chat soon mate 👍🏻

@@LetsClickPhotography you're correct, Sony does make a 24-240 FE 3.5-6.3 E mount. I'd not seen it before.

To me this looks like a very useful compromise lens when you want to travel light or keep it simple: on holiday, a day out or a hike, a walkaround or notebook lens. It seems to outperform the very large, heavy and expensive EF 28-300, which is showing its age. Even if you have high-end prime and zoom RF lenses, I can see this complementing those in certain situations where it's good enough.
@LetsClickPhotography
@LetsClickPhotography Год назад
I agree, just a shame for me that it doesn't have some form of sealing. Not that weather sealing is the be all and end all, but was a compromise that I wasn't willing to make given some of the shoots that I do. For pleasant day landscapes, holidays, travel and all round general carry though I think it is pretty darn good.
@paulhenry7
@paulhenry7 Год назад
@@LetsClickPhotography I guess the answer is to keep some rain protection handy, just in case, whether that's a fancy CCS case, a ThinkTank emergency rain cover or just a plastic bag. As for the general complaint about softness in the corners, especially at both ends of the zoom range, you could view this as a sort of 'softness vignette' that might sometimes be used to advantage. I'll know better when I get one, which is I think imminent.

Great review, but I still don't understand: 24-26 (f4), 27-43 (f4.5) and so on, or 24-27 (f4), 28-44 (f4.5)?

Meh, its an ok walkabout lens but not at 24mm and heck what R mount user drops $$ to shoot in the rain typically anyway. I always plastic bag the camera and rubber band the bag at the end of the lens.. still I'd of spent another half again as much money for a bit better quality out of this lens.. the vignetting like you say is a problem and attach a filter on the end and it adds more to that.. great review and thanks..
@LetsClickPhotography
@LetsClickPhotography 3 года назад
Thanks K P. I can only presume that this lens is aimed at the rp end of the r mount system. For travel photography it’s a balancing act of compromise between weight, room and image quality and that’s where I’m guessing Canon is aiming it. For those purposes it’s not a terrible lens I suppose. The weather sealing thing though does then come into play - one day tour of London (for example) and it’s raining incessantly.....kinda makes this lens pointless. Though from Canons sales report from 2020 this shipped a bundle so guess someone’s gotta be buying it! Cheers for dropping your comment, appreciate it 👍🏻

I've had mine(as a kit w/the RP) for almost a year. For most hobbyists, it's good enough and to have that flexibility on, say, a vacation is awesome. However, i think if you have an R or are springing for an R5, the 24-105 f4 is going to serve you far better.
@LetsClickPhotography
@LetsClickPhotography 3 года назад
No doubt this was aimed at the RP end of the R range of camera bodies. At the same time though, this is still near a 1k lens so still a pretty serious investment. The biggest draw is the versatility and so if that is your main priority then it outperforms most lenses. Optically, of course, it does not, I wouldn't even bother mounting it on an R5 - but then an R5 isn't a camera to be taking on vacation!

Finally just bought one. Really terrible edges and CA and you said. Center is sharp as a tack! Color through this lens is gross. Haha plus I when comparing it to my 200mm f2.8 canon L prime it has the exact same magnification as my 200mm when at 240.. like it’s missing a full 40mm of zoom. What the hell?! Haha I’m still Probably gonna keep it. It’s a necessary evil. Would happily pay 1500 for this if it’s range was as advertised, sealed a bit better and didn’t have that garbage distortion.

Well let’s be honest you were never ever ever going to come across to our Stadium were you 😂😂 You gave the impression you were not feeling that lens and after the review I can see why - No weather seal or lens hood (I thought all came with hoods as standard these days ) As you know I shoot Nikon but enjoyed the critique nonetheless Dave even if you didn’t come over tho the Champions home 😛

Haha.....thing is......I was gonna head over there as a third stop but ‘rain stopped play’ at the cricket ground. Even had a ‘abandoned building’ Intro ready for it 😂😂 but with no weather sealing on a rented lens which was already becoming drenched I called time. There’s actually a really good shot at the Etihad with that footbridge leading in at dusk when the stadium is lit up.....went and had a wander last week when I was getting my jab there.

I simply do NOT understand. For ages ALL reviews are about optical quality and then we test the ultimo's of the lens, always looking immediately into sharpness, vignetting, aberrations and barrel distortion. And when a lens scored bad in these areas - woooo the lens manufacturor. And now, with Canon trying to get all their DLSR EF(S) body and lens owners onto the R patform - now this isn't an issue any more - for software can easily correct this? WHAT a NONSENSE. A) You're dependent on the in-camera JPG generation and - let's face it - that's not ideal. B) you HAVE TO post-process EVERY raw image. Well: that works quite well when shooting 1.000 images on your wild life trip, holiday, football match or wedding shoot. Any idea how time that's going to cost you? Or how advanced your automatic correcting port-procesisng workflow must be? WTF. Generating a strong, decent, directly OK raw file REMAINS to be very very relevant and this lens SUCKs at this. I'm ranting for I beleieve these type of Hooray! video reviews are either bad reviews or we're looking at marketing sponsored rubbish. And I'm ranting for Canon will simply not UP their game when we - as photograpghers - buy into this BS of accepting very poor optical performance of their newest lenses. I'm sticking to my R system adaptor and the ES, ES-F, L series, Sigma Sports and Tamron high quality lenses and DO NOT buy into this poor quality trap.
@Darth-TBAG

Why would they not allow you to shoot outside old trafford. I bet everyone else was just standing outside taking photos of the stadium with their phones lol. The security has no right to tell you to stop filming lmao
@LetsClickPhotography
@LetsClickPhotography 3 года назад
haha, yes you're right, there were lots of people taking pictures and (no doubt filming) in their phones. I asked security what made it different for them and the short answer was - a tripod. Apparently a tripod is the difference (in their eyes) between a professional film crew who need permits and a tourist!! I wasn't the only one - there were some other you tubers who had the same issue. In fact where I was stood there was someone filming a football vlog right next to me!
@Darth-TBAG
@Darth-TBAG 3 года назад
@@LetsClickPhotography I see. Yeah that's usually the differentiator unless you are carrying some big ass broadcast camera that security in places (including malls) will ask if you have a permit to film. Indoors I usually will comply, but if its outdoors in public I will state my rights to film and take photos (under the fair usage act on filming in a public space). That's why I love these mirrorless cameras with IBIS- less conspicuous and no tripod needed! lol
