In this video, I’m going to review the Canon RF-28mm F2.8 STM lens, which is a pancake lens for the EOS R mirrorless system. This lens is super small and light, but does it deliver on performance and image quality? Let’s find out!
The Canon RF-28mm F2.8 STM lens is the smallest and lightest RF lens to date, measuring just 24.7mm in length and weighing 120g. That’s about the size of a cookie! It has a metal mount, a 55mm filter thread, and a slim focus ring that can also be used as a customizable control ring. It has an STM motor for smooth and quiet autofocus, and a minimum focus distance of 0.23m with a maximum magnification of 0.17x. It also has a 7-blade aperture that ranges from f/2.8 to f/22-32, and an innovative optical design that includes three aspherical elements with a complex shape that resembles a seagull’s wing.
This lens is very versatile and can be used for various genres of photography, such as street, travel, reportage, video, and even macro. It offers a mild wide-angle view on full-frame cameras and a standard view on APS-C cameras. It delivers excellent image quality with sharp details, low distortion, minimal chromatic aberration, and good resistance to flare and ghosting thanks to the Super Spectra coating. The f/2.8 aperture allows for decent low-light performance and background separation, although it is not as fast or bright as some other RF primes. The lens is also compatible with the RF extenders, which can increase its reach and magnification.
The Canon RF-28mm F2.8 STM lens is a great addition to the RF lens lineup, especially for those who value portability and simplicity. It is ideal for pairing with compact bodies like the EOS R10, R50, or R100, where it becomes an essential prime lens for everyday shooting. It is also a good option for full-frame users who want a wide-angle lens that is easy to carry around and does not compromise on performance. The only drawbacks of this lens are its very thin focus ring, which may be hard to use for some people, and its lack of weather-sealing. Also, some may prefer the slightly wider and faster RF 24mm f/2.8 IS STM lens, which offers image stabilization and more versatility.
