Thank you for the video. Do you think it’s worth considering buying a used Sigma 35mm ART 1.4? Will it have a better image? In price it is equal to the new RF 35mm 1.8. So I wondered if it was worth using it for work? Everyone has their own opinion and is already confused
I had that lens for a long time and loved it. On the EF mount the AF wasn't reliable so I sold it. Now with the RF mount I feel like I would like it more than this lens except for the macro ability. Hope that helps!
Thanks for showing an overhead shot for macro minimum focus distance along with the resulting shots. That is very helpful. Your detail shots at weddings are phenomenal. Keep up the great work.
Nice review. This lens has been on my radar for a while. Your video gave a great demonstration of its usefulness and quality. Definitely a lens worthy of being in the kit bag i reckon. Thanks for making.
I am just about to watch it, but does it tackle the low light wedding situation and dance floor maybe? Would love to understand how is the focus compared to RF 85mm 1.2 for example. Looking for an RF 35mm hence I am going to watch this in a minute :)
Great review, especially the macro shots. Thank you!!! BTW... When you travel with your light setup, how are you packing it? I'm looking for a way to bring my R8 w/ a lens in addition to a laptop. Thanks!
Got this lens on Saturday. Amazing on the R6 II. Took some test shots and it's crazy good for my purposes. I don't pixel peep. I am about composition / art. Love love love it!
Love the EF 35mm 1.4 II. But honestly that's a hard call! I made a while back where I compare the two. Maybe it will help you! You can't go wrong either way. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-hdldTtRIt5E.html
Thanks for sharing. Is this the only lens you use for macro shot? Or you also have a 100mm macro lens? I bought this 35mm lens too, but not sure if I still need a 100mm for macro.
Great review. I own ef50mm 1.8 so far. Ordered the rf35mm 1.8 that i will receive next month. Am i really gonna notice differences in IQ? (Contrast, color rendition). I use the rp and shoot event. Also would i see big chnge if i upgrade to the eos r?
That is like the best feedback I could hear! I am trying to make reviews that answer the same kinds of questions I have when I am considering a lens. I show more photos and videos of it in this video that I also just posted. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-6sH4pLvTt0w.html Hope it helps!
Hey man! Just saw this video and the one you did when you first lens... Here you say that the IS isn’t fantastic, in the first one you say is great! Hahah But my question was, in first video, all of those photos were SOOC? They look GREAT from the 3 lenses! I wanna comment on that video, but the comments are off...
Hey thanks! Yeah when I did the first video, I had just gotten the lens and hadn't used it at a wedding yet. In my first few images it seemed like the IS was working great, but after using it for the last year, I wasn't impressed with it. Hope that makes sense. Maybe I just got a bad copy. But yeah I am pretty sure those photos were SOOC! I can turn the comments back on now. I was getting some trolls ;)
Shane Long Photography hahahaha don’t worry! Trolls are just gonna be trolls 🤣🤣🤣🤣 Okok I see, I was planning on getting the Sigma 35 1.4 ART... But for 200$ less, RF mount, waaay tiny, “IS”, and awesome IQ... I’m going for the RF 35! I just hope it is professional work photos graded hahaha
I’m an RP owner still not able to decide on my first RF lens. Do I go for the 35 or hold out/save up another third more UK pennies for the 24-105 F4. I suppose it depends on whether the majority of my photos using EF lenses are around the 35mm?
Depends on what kind of photos you want to make! For my needs, I would choose the 35mm 1.8. I have owned a 25-105 before and didn't really enjoy it that much. The photos turn out good, but didn't have much "wow" to them. The 35 is a very versatile focal length and the f1.8 is great for low light photos. Have fun with whichever lens you buy!
I have the R and the 24-105f4 and the lens is very good so I’d never dissuade anyone to get it. However the 35 arrives tomorrow... if I had the RP I would not hesitate to make the 35 my first lens. Talk about a travel / lite weight setup. As I lug the 24-105 and Ef 16-35 around in my backpack I think about your potential combo all the time and is why I’m buying it. The 2 additional stops sealed the deal.
Hi Shane, thanks for teh review. Just one question. Did you try this lens with the R5? I don't know how well it'll handle the 45MP resolution. Thanks in advanve!
Hello! When I made this review, I didn't yet have the R5. But I have been using this lens on the R5 since July and it does fantastic. Resolves the 45MP just fine! Hope that helps!
Wow. That is good info on the IS for macro work. I was trying to decide if the IS would make any real difference to me compared to other options without IS. I have the R5 too and I want a really light macro option when I am out looking for birds with my big 500 mm, f/4 IS. I think you have addressed my question here. Thanks.
Glad it was helpful! Yeah with the R5 the 35mm I can still only take shots of about 1/30 when I am doing macro work. But this lens is great! I sold off my 35L and just use the RF version whenever I need it.
Shane Long Photography did you actually sold your 35mm L II??? Wow so your using this RF only?! Means a lot then! (Been following you since like forever jajaja)
Hey Toby! Great question! I used it once to take star photos and it did a good job! Though I am in no way an astro photographer. But when I do star photos, I prefer a little wider field of view so I can capture more of the sky, so I usually use my RF 15-35 2.8. Hope that helps!
I have owned both! They are both great. I personally would go with the RF 35 1.8. The macro ability is a nice bonus. With a 35mm the difference of 1.8 or 1.4 isn't significant. Just my thoughts!
Thanks for sharing your thoughts Shane! I also really enjoy using the RF 35 1.8 for weddings. Your detail shots are amazing! Would you consider doing a guide on how you piece together those photos?
@@royaltykidstv it’s holding up pretty well for both portraits and action! The RF 35 1.8 is still my preferred lens for travel or when I need a light and easy setup, but if I need that extra touch of magic I’ll grab a 1.4.
Yes. It is a great combo. I sold it a little while back as I moved almost all to the new RF lenses and that is the one lens I miss. Hoping they come out with the new RF 35 1.2 soon!
Kind of depends on what you photograph. If it is portraits/events, I would get the EF 35 1.4 II. If it is for macro or just a walk around lens, I would get the the RF 35 1.8. Hope that helps!
Works really well! I just used it at yesterday's wedding for dimly lit dance and for the poorly lit processional and it did fine! The IS isn't as remarkable as it is on the L lenses, but thats ok.
Thank you for this review! Lovely images too! Was wondering, you mention using presets (in this or in another one of your videos) and I wanted to ask if you sell them somewhere?
Hello! Thanks so much for watching! I don't have any presets to sell. I just was referring to what I put on mine. I use a Portra 400 preset that I have modified. All the best!
Tough call. If you want a slightly more blurry background, go with the Sigma. If don't want to deal with the adapter, and want macro, go with the Canon! Hope that helps!
@@ShaneLongPhotography haha, i've decided to go with rf as it is more lightweight, have IS and macro. I don't really mind about 1.4 aperture. Anyway, thankyou for answering 😁
Hey Michael! I tried both "Varies with Rotation Speed" and "Linked to Rotation Degree" but I didn't find much of a difference in the two. Are there any other settings you know that speed it up?
Good question. I haven't had any issues with it hunting. Mostly because the camera focuses very well in low light. But I mostly use my 35L in low light so I don't have a lot of experience with it in that situation.
Would you recommend this lens over the 1.4 II? I have the 1.4 v1 and I find it misses it's focus mark so much, I'm considering upgrading to the 1.4 II. But I found this lens and I can't decide which to go for! I have a IV, R and an R6.
I had the 35L II and loved it. Focused perfectly for me (though the first copy I had didn't so I sent it back). I did sell it the 35L II as I also have the RF 35 1.8. Now I kind of miss the 35L II. Just hoping they soon release an RF 35 1.2. Hope that helps!
Thanks Roy! I have noticed that when I put the lens on my R and R5 it takes the camera an extra second or two longer to boot up. Manually focusing it takes a long time to go from infinity to minimum. But I have never felt like the AF was slow remarkably slow. It isn't as fast as an L lens, but it isn't bad. Hope that helps!
Hello. Which lens did you like working with the most? Where is the best picture? How noticeable is the difference between their quality? I'm now in a situation where I can't choose a lens for photography. Do you think it’s worth buying a used Sigma ART 35 1.4 or buying a new RF 1.8? Their price is the same in my region
Hello and thank you for this great video and testing. I have for two years this Canon 35mm f2 is usm. I just bought a Canon RP as a replacement for my old 6D. I am using the 35 f2 is usm on the RP with an RF-EF adapter ring. In your opinion: Will the new RF 35mm f1.8 Macro stm perform better than the EF 35mm f2 is usm? The difference in image rendering if there is any, can it justify that I buy this new RF 35 to replace my EF 35? In advance thank you for your response. (Note that the RF Macro option will not be an important point in my decision ...) Sincerely, Philgood ...
Hello! Sorry for the slow reply, but crazy busy here and haven't thad time to check in on RU-vid! I haven't used the EF 35 f2, but I am sure it was a good little lens. The RF is really good for the price. I just have never compared them side by side. All the best!
I was considering it for street photography, but I hear the focus speed is slower than the 50mm, and some reports of it not locking in and missing a focus. That would not work for the street.
Hello! Sorry for the slow time to respond. I had to take a break from RU-vid as I was super busy with photoshoots and family life. Not sure if helps, but I have used it very fast paced at weddings for the last few years and never had any issues with the AF not being able to keep up. Hoping Canon comes out with an L version soon! Have fun with that street photography!
Your autofocus is extremely slow, also just wanted to say the colour grading is lacking, video isn't amazingly sharp. If you're actually using that lens to record, you've got the wrong settings.
Thanks for the comment! It's all done automatically by the camera. I am not a videographer, just a photographer using the camera to help people learn about lenses! All the best!
@@ShaneLongPhotography Ah fair enough, other than that the video was nice, debating on getting this lens but unsure if I should bother, it seems to be an ok macro lens.
