Very useful information, Zach. I'm planing tu get this lens mainly for video with my R6. At the moment I use the EF 24-70mm F/2.8L II but it's heavy and the adapter puts the weight far from the body. I need something light, small and reasonably sharp, and I don't need to shoot wide open. Thank you and cheers from Buenos Aires!
Found this video after seeing a secondhand listing a few hours away for an EOS R with this lens at €900…Looks like I’m about to go on a road trip! Thanks for the review!
Thanks Kach this is very helpful. Im a Nikon user and and Im going to buy a R6 - the 35RF was obviously the first lens I thought of. I may also add th 50RF F1.8 as well - I haven't made my mind up about that yet as I shoot a lot of hybrid work.
Agreed, looks great on the camera. When you attach the lens you can almost hear "reunited and it feels so good" playing softly in the background. Almost. I had a really wide angle 14mm and the 70-200 and wanted something that fell in between. I debated between this 35mm macro and the nifty 50 but ultimately went with the 35.
Totally agree it's a great versatile lens! I did a milky way Timelapse with the RF35mm and was blown away by how sharp the images turned out for my video, compared to my EF 24-70mm F2.8 L that I am normally used to.
Hello Master: Please help and give me some advice, The camera I am currently using is Canon EOS R10, The kit lens used with it is (RF-S18-150mm f/3.5-6.3 IS STM) My main subject matter is toy photography. The secondary shooting content is street photography or portrait photos. Now I want to buy new lenses, after watching your video, Want to be Canon RF 50mm f/1.8 STM and RF85mm F2 Macro IS STM or RF 35mm 1.8 STM After making a choice, I would like to ask you to give me some advice on which lens is more suitable for me? Thank you.🙏🙏🙏
I am still using the ef 40 mm f/2.8 pancake lens for walk around in cities etc. It has been a favourite, cheap and versatile and worked in any light. Shot a lot of people at 40 mm at it is really good for that, too. The 35 mm is almost same length makes this an attractive upgrade. It is larger, though. The IS is a benefit, too. EF 50 mm f/1.2l is my other favourite but too tight many time. 40 mm is just right, inside or outside.
As a Fuji user too, I am put off by the lack of WR, plastic build, and noisey focus motor. If only Canon would offer something in between this and their super expensive large lenses I’d likely pick up an R6. I recognize the Canon system would give technically superior results but am worried that going between a Fuji system (with their small f2 primes) and this would really be a downgrade in the experienced of shooting. What do you think? I suspect I would also miss the fun of using a marked aperture ring.. It can’t be that hard for Canon to make some smaller ‘premium’ lenses too?
Hey there! Thanks so much for watching. I feel this. I wish Canon would make something in between. There is something really unique about the Fujifilm cameras, but Canon's reliability and ease of use is also hard to beat sometimes. I have definitely found myself in your position! Hope this helps.
35mm is just such a versatile focal length! I own the RF 50 1.8, which is pretty strong for its price, and I am focusing on getting the zoom trinity first. But for events, having two bodies (R + R6) with a 35 1.8 and 85 2.0 should be awesome!
Oh yeah, totally! I am definitely interested in the RF 50 1.8 just because of its size & price and I love a 50 mm. I've heard mixed things - how do you like it? Thanks for watching!
@@TheZachMendez I love my RF 50 1.8! It is very lightweight, compact and therefore perfect for picking it up whenever I leave my house. I often have my R6 with my RF 50 1.8 lying on the kitchentable for grabbing it quickly when my children are playing or when we have friends over at our place. The pictures are sharp on the R6, especially when stopping down to about 2.8 or higher. When shooting at the widest aperture the RF 50 1.8 is prone to chromatic aberations. Also the bokeh tends to be a bit busy. And the lens is very noisy (luckily not when shooting video) and tends to focus breath quite a bit. That was the main reason for me to also get the RF 24-70, but I still think the RF 50 1.8 is such a fun lens to use and the pictures look really good. It reminds me of using my Canon M50 with my Canon 32 1.4 EF-M lens and the RF 50 1.8 made me sell this system, because the R6 with the RF 50 1.8 is light and small enough for me. None of my friends would be able to pick up on the small imperfections this lens has anyway. I do however see why - in a professional environment - one would prefer the RF 50 1.2 though.
Hello and thank you for this video. Have you been able to test the RF 50mm f 1.8 and compare it to the RF 35 f1.8 ? If so, which of the two is better in your opinion ? Which of these two lenses do you prefer for portraits ? Thank you in advance for your answers, Sincerely, Philgood of Paris France
I haven’t reached for it all that often. I usually log around my RF 24-70 or the 50. But grabbed it for the macro possibilities. But I guess I need to grab it and go enjoy it more! Love the videos! Keep em coming!
I totally feel this! In the past when I tried cheaper lenses I would never use them because I was just like, well I can't beat the 50 so... But in this case I think the 35 produces really amazing images and it's just so nice to use with the R6. Thanks for watching! :)
i used this lens about 1.5 year, its great very versatile lens, only one downside is poor build quality, focus ring is peeling off, feels very cheap, canon do this every time same as ef 85mm 1.2, great glass, weird plastic choices
Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I just picked one up. It’s also my first RF lens. I’m learning to love it. I like how light and relatively small it is. Feels great on my EOS RP.
sorry late to the party here but yes would love a RF 35 1.4 L but the freaks at Canon mkt will come to the show with a 35L 1.0 and it will be the size of the 50L 1.2. It will be optically amazing but will make me want the xpro 4 asap. LOL
Hi! Thanks for watching! Unfortunately this is an RF lens, meaning it uses the RF lens mount on the R system. The 600D has an EF lens mount, so the lens won't be compatible on that camera. Hope this helps!
People should really push canon to weather seal all of its lenses. Also to allow paying 3rd party lens manufacturers to be able to make RF mount AF lenses. Stop kissing canon's a$$ and start demanding more for the amount of money we pay for that gear.
0:53 "it comes with an aperture ring and a control ring" Don't all RF lenses come with a control ring which can be assigned in-camera to aperture? It's not a dedicated aperture ring as in, say, Fuji lenses. Is that correct?
Some lenses just have one ring and a switch that changes it from af/mf to control ring. Most have both a focus ring and a control ring. You can program it to aperture, but also whatever setting you want.
Hello and thank you for this video. Sorry I am French and I do not understand technical English very well ... So I will be buying the Canon eos RP (small, light and not very expensive) very soon, so I would like to know what the best Lens on the Canon RP (I only take photos, no Videos): Canon RF 35mm f / 1.8 Macro IS STM or Canon EF 35 mm f 2 ISUSM ? Which one has the best image rendering for photos ? Are they close enough in terms of image quality? Thank you in advance for your answers, Sincerely, Philgood ...
@@TheZachMendez Thank you very much for your answer. Finally, I was able to do some portrait tests myself with these two Canon RF 50mm and EF 40mm lenses and I could see a slight difference in favor of the RF 50mm. In fact I find that the images taken with the EF 40mm are flatter, then which are more modeled with the RF 50mm ... My choice is made, it will be the RF 50mm f1.8 to equip my Canon RP ! Thank you again for all your answers. Best regards, Philgood ...
You’re going to make so much money with that 35mm it’s ridiculous. In two years you will look at it and laugh how that cheap lens made you so many videos and kept the gear light and easy. It’s a video lens! You will get Great close up video portraits etc. plus you can even get a lot of cinematic footage at 1.8 Now onto something more important. Who makes that denim shirt really diggin it. Thx
"macro" really just refers to the close focusing distance. Essential the ratio of subject to sensor I believe. It doesn't have anything to do with the actual sharpness of the lens. Hope this helps & thanks for watching!
Really enjoying your pictures! Do you shoot RAW or are those JPEGs? I'm having a bit of a crisis: I wanted to go with Nikon because it's more affordable and I was going to shoot RAW anyway. But after scrolling through Insta and watching dozens of YT videos I found TONS of creators I enjoy that shoot Canon and barely any that use Nikon. It's not that I can't find Nikon creators - it's just that I, 9 out of 10 times, don't like their work (colors/skin/lighting). And I can't decide if it's their actual work or somehow the camera. All I know about cameras tells me "it's not the gear", but it's getting a little hard to believe :/ Any insights are greatly appreciated.
This is such an interesting comment! I totally get it. I know it's always about the creator and very rarely about the gear, but I still check to see what people are shooting with LOL. I just think that Canon is more common - I don't know if it really makes a noticeable difference. I have always used Canon (except for a Nikon 1 at one point when I was in college) and prefer the aesthetics of the cameras/lenses over Nikon. Some talented Nikon photogs that come to mind are Rico Reinhold & Brandon Woelfel. I'm sure there are loads more. You could also look at their ambassador page just to see. Hope this helps & thanks for watching! :)
@@TheZachMendez Ha! Now I feel silly :D .. your recommendations are on point, especially Rico's work is just awesome! Thanks a lot, I guess I just didn't look hard enough. Looking forward to more of your work!
Take a look at "the Bite Shot" she is a food photographer - she shot canon then borrowed a Z6II - she liked the colour so much that she's completely moved over to Nikon. She says she has less work to do on Nikon files. Another is Dan Watson and Taylor Jackson. Taylor loves the AF on the R6 but prefers the Nikon camera bodies lenses and files. Im a Nikon shooter but ill be getting a R6 but only for the AF.
Although they are both stellar cameras, I think the R6 is a clear upgrade over the R. The low light performance and video quality are vastly improved. Also the R6 has IBIS & 2 SD card slots. Even though the R is higher res with 30 MP, the R6 takes such amazing images it's hard to tell the difference. That's my somewhat biased answer but I hope it helps!
When you see how great the STM trinity is in the RF range, it's hard to buy any of the red ring RF lenses. I just bought one of these for $600 AUD... The next Prime lens up is over $3,000 AUD.
Both are great!! For me it's not about the quality of those lenses - they are equal. It's about the focal length. I prefer 50mm for portraits, but it really depends on your style. Thanks for watching :)
I use the Peak Design strap attachments. They are the hooks that can work with any camera strap if you get the fasteners from Peak Design. I also use the Holdfast Moneymakers for my dual strap. Those just screw into the thread in the bottom of the camera where you typically mount a tripod plate, etc. Hope this helps!
Hi Zach, I love your channel! Does the control ring on this lens click when turned, like it does on the RF 50 1.2? The reason I ask is I recently picked up the little RF 50mm f1.8 lens and the control ring on it is very loose. Just wondering how it compares. Thanks! Liz
Would you be interested in editing a few family photos and helping to get them ready to print and frame, for a few? I could drop box them to you, maybe pay by Venmo, and you could do a bit of editing. ? Thanks.
Hey there! Thank you for this! Sure thing, do you want to send me more info to my biz email? zach@zmendez.com We can talk about it. Thanks for watching :)
Another lens I didn’t plan on getting. But now I own two! When the R was introduced in 2018 I went to an event where I got to try out this lens and was very impressed with the samples! Price was so good I had to order! And Macro is a huge bonus! Now the RF 50 f1.8 is another story. 😬 ha ha!
