I think the r5ii now is the most powerfull camera in the market! High res, so much video codecs, Full hdmi, super fast, bsi stacked sensor,clog 2, 10 bit, raw video, and so much more and the rf mount is superb! They got the Best af in the market, and so much more, i think canon is at thier best, and people will start feel bad that they moved to another system..

The R5 was still the best of the bunch but it need a few extras to come on top and that’s exactly what the mark II just accomplished. It’s going to be a massive sale for years to come no matter what they come out with.

When you take every spec and feature into account as well as mount, the Z8 still comes ahead. Its more feature rich and has more important features boosted up. Also the Z mount has plenty of superior glass to canon RF mount

Answer: Even for Pros, and maybe even more so than for amateurs, ergonomics, ease of use, a faultless AF included. Canon is second to none in that field.

Absolutely agree. I also prefer Canon because of the three large manufacturers they are the only one that display a RGB histogram in the viewfinder to assists with manual exposure.

The R1 is built for freelancers who travel the world photographing major events, watched a RU-vid video on a F1 photographer who said he would shoot 10000 images in one practice session and the first photographer who got his photos uploaded first would get the sales. Years ago I was at the uk photo show, when canon launched the 5d mkiii. Got talking to a buyer for one of the uk pro dealers about any info on the new 1ds mk4. He said the 5d mkii killed the 1ds line and pros were buying 2 5d mkii or the 1d mk4 if selling to papers and needed to upload photos though the mobile phone network

There is practically ZERO reason to listen to a LOUD small minority when it comes to Canon's Flagship R1 Camera. ZERO. Most complaining would never buy it regardless of how many MP it ever has. Another rumor site just recently stated that the R3 line will continue, a statement made by Canon USA and then posted. Which makes perfect sense as I see it more of a TESTBED body for some of Canon's newer TECH. I predict the R3 series of Cameras will get a Global Shutter long before the R1 Flagship camera gets one. Also the potential is there for a HIGH MP Count, maybe 60MP plus in the R3 series also. But no time soon do I expect a higher MP R1 and neither do the vast majority of folks that are actually buying it. Because it is simply not needed nor asked for in this Niche Targeted market for VAST Majority of buyers.

It is difficult to predict what Canon will do with the R3 line. If they decide to keep it they will have to price it lower than the R1. Frankly, I don't see how they do it. I could see it being used as a test bed for new tech, but why? Canon could readily develop a global sensor and test it internally and release it in the R1 Mk2. I guess, if the global sensor has limitations in low ISO dynamic range and high ISO noise that they could put it into a R3 Mk2 stating that the sensor performance is not as good as the R1 in those two dimensions. For a low-light camera the R1 is perfect and for someone that make photobooks. With 8x10 as the largest print a 24 MP sensor is fine especially with upscaling AI software.

@@user-pg4zh2tk2wI have made hundreds of 20x30 inch prints from 16, 20 and 24 megapixel cameras. Never had anyone ever say, "Too bad you didn't have more megapixels!" Most of these were made before the current batch of upscaling software existed.

It’s amazing how many RU-vidrs that have been reviewing Camera bodies for 10 years and more, don’t realize that Canon doesn’t care what the other manufactures are gonna do. They didn’t make the R1 body for people that want to make RU-vid videos . They only want to give the pros that need these type of cameras what they want.

The R1 is a great journalism and sports camera. The issue is that the R3 was already that. And many people would like a higher megapixel pro body that is not the R5. The R5 is great and many things were improved (mainly video) in the R5mk2. But it’s crippled so that it doesn’t surpass the R1. I’d like a non crippled version.

It's the specs but R3 owners know that the R1 will be superior to the R5ii much like the R3 is to the R5. Superior battery life, better IBIS, better low light filming, and snappier autofocus baby! That is why we're paying the extra $1300 for the R1 folks

You should do a video about FOMO. It's a real thing for so many people. I've owned so many cameras over the past 18 years, and none of them have made me a better photographer. It's fun (when you have money) to buy a new camera, but it can also cause a lot of anxiety when new cams are released and when you feel yours isn't up to par with everybody else. I know somebody that owns every single Canon DSLR ever made, and even the R3. Doing testing between them all the real world improvements are really quite minor when it comes to IQ. Autofocus has improved a lot, though almost any new camera now can do a great job. For video things are a bit different, but I know a cam like an R6 or R6 II is better than the best Canon 1DX from a few years ago and people made amazing content with those cams (or even the tiny sensor cams like the GH series from Panasonic).

I think Canon made a marketing blunder in not calling the new “flagship” camera the R3 MkII, which would have allowed them to discontinue the current R3, rather than be stuck with it. That would leave room for the flagship R1 people had expected - with high res and high speed, and maybe high dynamic range, too. The true “master of all” that we were teased was coming the last two years.

To my knowledge Canon never claimed that the R1 would be the "master of everything". It was the sports/photojournalism flagship that I expected it to be, carrying on the tradition of the 1d-1dx series, which were NEVER super high megapixel cameras, but concentrated on speed and cutting edge technology. I have been saying for four years now that the R1 would not be released until 2024 (Olympics year) and that it would likely have between 20 and 32 megapixels. No one believed me.

Canon’s worldwide sales in 2006 was 4156 billion Yen and in 2023 it was 4180 billion Yen. The company hasn’t grown in almost 20 years. I am a big fan of Canon but not realizing that Photography was being challenged by iPhone, Print is being challenged by Paperless is difficult to understand.

Wow. Hello from a Nikon shooter ala D3,D700, D300, z50….etc. First of all as Nikon shooter I have always admired Canon line up of cameras. They always created a masterpiece of a camera except the eos 1D mark 3 I believe had issues during Olympics many many years ago. I think my fave camera canon released was the Eos-5D mk 1 and 2. That 5D mk1 sensor had some ‘special sauce’ especially for wedding. It was that video that set it apart from everything else. The tech has jumped significantly but it still comes down to the individual photographer and videographer (I don’t like this word-too many syllables) Anyhoo when you are on assignment all the RU-vid stuff goes out the door. All you are looking to do is GET THE SHOT! The tog is master of his craft, the camera helps get him there. Those award winning sport shots don’t matter if slightly out of focus eye lashes won’t matter at ALL! The R1 is a tool for the journalist. The only thing I would desire is that whatever cameras released now are low light demons. As an event shooter/concert etc…I dwelled in the dark. But I always seeked that sliver of light. Hence the Nikon D3 (Lord of Darkness). The new cameras can now comfortably match what the D3 offered now in a 24 MP body. But technics still hold true. Capturing action at its peek always yielded sharp images. Catching a ballerina at 1/125 sec in a dimly lit hall yielded sharp images. All the sports have NOT changed. Every sport has a peak action point where the subject momentarily stops or you pan with that image. To capture a sharp subject with a streaked background yielded spectacular results.

the only thing that i like about canon is the 100 500mm ive just sold my r5 as the nikon is just a far better system and the 0.80x magnification on the EVF is far better..the canon r-1 is just overpriced and 24mp isnt good enough

A higher MP count, dual CFExpress version of the R5ii in a pro body could sound like an R2 to me. I'm waiting on some of this new tech to go into the R7ii; the stacked sensor, new AF modes, and the Accelerator chip. I just hope Canon doesn't mess around with the body, I like the scroll wheel and joystick combo, plus where the photo and video mode switch is.

It will get there, but probably not until it's common place. Canon just doesn't seem that interested in APS-C, as evidenced by their allowing third parties to fill in the lens line.

Hey Simon, have you been dreaming about an R2D2 ;-) ?? An R5ii in a R3/R1 style body with dual CFxB cards and R3/R1 battery would be better than using a battery grip. But when that would be coming, it didn't make sense to just release 3 new versions of battery grips .. Maybe there's room for a 60+ megapickle body .. but it might be too early to have that resolution on a stacked sensor, and releasing now something high end without stacked or global sensor would not generate positive vibes ..

I think a high resolution version of either the R3 or R1 makes a lot of sense so an R2 is completely plausible. Or Canon could switch the R3 MKII to a high resolution camera but either way there is a gap in the market for Canon to exploit. However they need to round out the f1.4L lenses as a priority first.

Sony will not take over Canon this year unless they update the A7S or A1 soon. I don’t see that happening. That said, on the professional sports side, the Sony A9III is hard to beat. If Canon releases a fast focusing APS-C, then Sony is hosed. But I don’t see Canon being that bold. I’m still waiting for someone to release a stacked sensor APS-C camera for wildlife. I’m surprised Sony has not done that.

A R5C MKII with the new sensor, with internal ND and IBIS, would be the true flagship and it would become the bestseller if it gets also some benefits in the AF for videos. Canon could ask 600$ more over the R5MKII and at lest I would buy it directly.

In terms of focus speed, AF precision, build quality, speed, buffer depth, low-light photography the R1 is more advanced than the R5 Mk2. Sensor resolution is not the only metric by one decides which is better.

Would you please suggest, or just tell Canon to stop putting those small underpowered batteries in their lesser cameras such as the R8 and R10. It is a bit cumbersome carrying around two sets of batteries and chargers.

I haven’t used an external charger for years, everything here charges over usb now. That does get a bit tedious before and after big trips, but it works for me.

The R8 and R10 due to their small size have to use the smaller batteries. If you want to use larger batteries you need to step up to R6 Mk2 or R7 cameras.

@@user-pg4zh2tk2w The R8 is not much smaller than the R7, but the R8 is full frame with the smaller battery, while the R7 is APS-C with larger battery. Working with the R6MII, and R8 as back up, I would love to have one set of batteries for both cameras. That is my wishlist going forward into the future for a companion camera to the R6.MII

Too much focus on what new camera is coming, and sales of a brand compared to another brand. Gone are the days of getting a great camera and getting great imagery, now it just seem like a battle of brands on RU-vid, and picking one side or another. Just like politics.

Things like market share are meaningless overall. It's good fodder for the brand loyalists to get some satisfaction with "bragging rights", but it still doesn't change that the current offerings are underwhelming. Canon is living on its reputation and the loyalty of its users. It's hardly innovative in any way. Does just enough to keep most of its users happy. If they were truly innovative they would have made the R1 revolutionary instead of an R3 upgrade. They put out a flagship DSLR 1DX3 when others were already putting out mirrorless offerings, all the while telling the public they were working on a flagship mirrorless. And 5+ years later we get the R1. Until they can break down exactly what is selling and how much of each, like automakers do, I'll take their market leadership as merely a talking point. These numbers could be them selling tons of inexpensive cameras in emerging markets. We don't know. I can't take them seriously until they put out a high mpx sensor in a pro body. They simply don't have one. But maybe they sold a few million R100s. Yet the fanboys eat this market share stuff up!

The only competitor to beat is xh2s. Sony is close second , basically neck & neck with canon. Nikon is not up to par. With current fuji firmware wrecking havoc with its AF. arguably canon r7 is the best aps-c in the market right now. Nice & sad at the same time. Sad because aps-c tech is just way behind FF .even m43 like pany & OM have better tech (stacked sensor)

"DSLR" stands for "digital single-lens reflex". The "reflex" is the mirror that allows light from the lens to go directly to the optical viewfinder. Mirrorless cameras remove the mirror and use an electronic viewfinder. So, they're entirely different optical systems and those terms are not to be used interchangeably.

I doubt you will get a stacked APS-C R7 II for $1400, which is the current price of the R7. For reference the only stacked APS-C camera, Fuji X-H2S retails for $2500 which is significantly more costly than the R7. Would R7 buyer be willing to spend $2500 or more?

@@badboyvr4 I disagree. I have had great results with it. The AF needs some minor tweaking but I have had no other issues with it for bird photography when shooting with the 100-400, 100-500 or the 800 f/11.

Seriously doubt people are going to spend $2500 on another mediocre crop sensor camera. The R7 has a ton of issues and just putting a stacked sensor in will probably exacerbate those problems.

How does using Canon glass cripple the system? Canon likely spend millions developing the RF mount and they can keep the mount closed as long as they want as a company. I am sure it will open eventually, but it will take time.

But they could have kep the EF mount closed as well, but they didn't and neither does Sony or Nikon. I was just making a point regarding Simon's cripple hammer statement.
