What’s great about canoo is that it’s not just a truck. It uses an independent skateboard using drive by wire tech (like the cybertruck). As a delivery van and airport shuttle there are many more commercial uses

When will people realize that the people who use trucks everyday Don't need quad cab short beds. We need single cab long beds with the ability to swap the bed to whatever we need. That said there's also a lot of desire for an affordable truck as 70K (typical ford, chevy, dodge) is ridiculous.

@@foreeldo honestly Aptera helped, I signed that petition myself, but I think the talk in Congress last summer about mandating a standard had a lot more do to with it. I have a hard time with any pick-up not being able to handle a proper load of dirt or rocks. It also has to pass the plywood test. Those are two very basic things a pick-up should be able to do. Further, in this day and age, having just two seats seems like a bad choice. They would still get industrial sales but hardly any interest from families that need a pick-up or couples considering a pick-up (the vehicle can't accomodate a growing family).

Canoo was the first EV I ever considered buying. This was years ago when they floated a subscription model or a $35K base price, which is vaporware. They are no where near retail sales and seem to be making the same mistakes Arcimoto has made with the "many shots on goal" strategy. I joined Aptera Motors Accelerator Program instead.

I want something like the Canoo Bulldog version but with the original expanding truck bed and front drop down Cafe table and storage. I also am fine with the Canoo being more like the size of a Honda Ridgeline if they can stuff more battery capacity into it. The Telo is too small to be useful to me. I am a truck guy who actually works out of and drives a truck everyday. I currently am using a 1/2 ton Silverado custom or stripped down trim pkg. Many of us just want a truck to work out of that is affordable. 40,000 dollar range is what your average blue collar worker can really afford.

Considering Canoo is in production I'm surprised more people haven't investigated, usually production is where the investment boom hits. And I hope Canoo focuses on the truck because we really don't have any small electric truck options, but all the other vehicles they want to make already are basically on the market from other makers. And America used to have a lot of 2 seater trucks, it's just that when automakers stop making them it seems like "no one wants a 2 seater"
@jonevansauthor
@jonevansauthor 9 месяцев назад
Thanks for pointing that out. I see that reversed logic deployed against products all the time. It doesn't exist, so who would want that? I mean, I remember when mobile phones weren't a thing, and when tablets were only on Star Trek, and when public phone booths in the UK had phones in them, and the advent of the PC and on and on. At every stage someone was saying, no-one wants this and I know because no-one sells it. Yet it turns out people do want things they can't currently get and that's 100% of the reason people invent new things, or start making old things again and that's all perfectly normal. The Polaroid died off and was almost immediately resurrected and seems to be selling well. They'd probably have kept making 2 seater, small pickups, if any of their bosses had any idea how to run a factory and modernise it to increase efficiency. Instead, they cancelled making them and then failed to adopt new techniques so they've lost a tonne of money on making expensive pickups inefficiently, instead of just making more. Doesn't mean that Americans are a special group of people who only want work trucks for family use.

@matthewboyd8689

@@jonevansauthor well, it's somewhat due to the EPA mpg standards because if they kept making these small trucks they'd get the same MPG as a Prius or a fine so they just decided to do what was cheaper, make bigger heavier trucks to not need to get as good mpg And it's why the roads are so bad too, every 10% increase in weight does 50%-100% more damage in cost So going from a 3,000 pound car to 4,000 pound SUV is about 4 times as expensive, and then the most popular vehicle in America (for over 40 years) is 5,000 pounds, or about 10 times as much damage to the road as a car.

@@matthewboyd8689 all things the industry would and could have solved if they weren't grossly incompetent and corrupt. I'm aware of the weird rulings making it easier for them to go with larger vehicles but also that since US politicians are bought and paid for by lobbyists, all those rules are up to themselves. And regardless, if they made their vehicles efficiently, the government wouldn't care. They could easily have transitioned to EVs by just getting on with it but what they actually do is take massive government handouts and spend the money on shareholders. There's no excuses for the politicians, or ICE vehicles countries, in any country. We know the engineers at Ford et al wanted changed, but the management are really only interested in their own wallet, and since they are business wonks not engineers, they don't know how to run an engineering company. Plus, they could easily have just made more efficient smaller trucks and got within whatever standards they were asked to. In case you weren't aware, a Ford in the UK and Europe vs the US model just had better suspension, fuel economy and general specification. They literally had all the tech they needed. I couldn't speak to the last fifteen years but I doubt that's changed.
@FrankPhartzzz

@@matthewboyd8689 the EPA excuse never made much sense to me as my old Isuzu pup got 40mpg. Seems like all of the fuel efficient diesel engines got banned for no real reason and now all of the emission garbage is destroying power/efficiency on top of getting clogged and sending trucks to the shop.

I really have a hard time understanding why folks are playing these dimensions games when for a truck most are still going to want to easily transport a 4x8 sheet of plywood (stacked 3/4 to at least 4-5 sheets) without the need for more than two people during that task. In a small footprint that configuration would be more than enough for most.

I like Canoo and I want them to succeed, partly also because customers need alternatives. Design and bed options are really beneficial, the mssing 2nd row is a bummer and a stupid decision. Being from Europe, I dig more compact vehicles, Telo does of course win here. From a handyman perspective, I‘d love to see the bed options from Canoo appear on the Telo. Extending the bed and be able to close it would be awesome (look at the mountainbike picture from Telo - imagine just a slight rear bump with 4 MTBs loaded and all forks would be toast).

My main issue with the Telo is the price of their talking about for this mini pickup truck I believe is way too high. If you can keep the price down around $30000 at the most. Then they have something that would work. If people would see the prices a person can buy a EV outside the US or Europe I believe they would be piss off how expensive they make EV in the US. I am in the same position as you, with some investment in Canon, and it's been a disappointment. But I have to disagree with you on two points: The MSRP range on the LSV is $34,000-$50,000. The Telo is going to "start" at $50k. You cannot compare the two vehicles without considering that. The reason they are cozying up to government officials is that the government is such a huge fleet buyer. They don't want bailouts, they want contracts for postal vans, Army staff vehicles, etc. It's a very smart move, while all the other car companies fight over soccer moms. They cozied up to Walmart too, for the same reason, and if Walmart goes big on Canoos, that alone could get their production to scale.

Wait, Wait... Did you just say the Telo is less tall as of that's a good thing? Maybe that's a bonus for car people who want a kinda-truck, but for people who need to drive a truck every day for work reasons, it's not. Likewise, I don't care about seating for more than one, really, though two is good - I do have a passenger sometimes, but mostly I keep my work bag on there. I was excited about the canoo until the range didn't look like it would get realistic, and it just looks like it'll never show up. I was excited about the Telo, but it looks like it'll just be way too small. I think it'll be a really nifty truck, just not great for me. For now, I guess it's not too tragic that I ended up locked in to my lightning for several years to come.

Interesting just one of the discussions you have is the fact that canoe is financially. There was another company in the Eevee feel that had some of the same issues I think their name was Tesla and everybody waited for them to go completely bankrupt and they did a lot of jumping through hoops financially but it seemed to turn out okay for them. As far as the futuristic look if you look at say the Volkswagen with the cutaway back end or the Willie's or the Ford and Chevy versions of the cab up front pickup truck back they almost have the exact same silhouettes. I guess the case of what's old is new again. Of course you have vastly new technology, materials and engineering. Also as Tesla was presented by many as the ice killer, it was and these are not necessarily us versus them scenarios. There is so much room for both of these vehicles you are comparing to compete with each and both be extremely successful for some reason these discussions always pick this is going to win out over that, so that's saying GM is going to have all the cars and Ford is going to disappear. That is definitely a fallacy argument. Has the fire as producing so many ideas or options I think again to compared to a fairly successful company, Tesla did the same type of thing making all kinds of potential outcomes some delivered and some did not.

Still hopeful for that Canoo. Telo seems a flash in the pants styling exercise

i do like the Telo, there are alot of nice features, the item that concerns me the most is the size of the crumple zone, will have no idea how this truck will perform in a crash test. Absolutely pickup trucks should be smaller so both Canoo and Telo are good options, but i have a preorder for the Canoo, and not the Telo at this time

The Canoo American Bulldog has my attention. Perfect for my short trips around town and cargo hauling. Would be better if it went 350 miles.

What you're really looking at between the two trucks is the Telo is the electric equivalent of a mini pickup and the Canoo is a mid-size. For practical truck utility I'd side with the Canoo, the Telo is more of a fun factor truck. Similar to the old Subaru Brat, the modern Hyundai Santa Cruz or even the original Mazda pickups/Ford Courier. Originally there was talk of the standard cab Canoo having jump seats like some of the extended cab trucks do. I suspect if they did it would be just as uncomfortable as they always are. Personally I'll keep my Tacoma for a truck, it's paid for and is a workhorse. I'm waiting for the Canoo LV as a people hauler.

I am all on board with Canoo the van model, but have seen recent videos talking about the truck version. One thing I have seen is that the bed expands to 8 feet allowing me to buy 4’x8’ OSB or drywall and haul that home. The other thing I like is the Canoo has the same foot print as a Prius so it will fit in my garage in van or truck form. What keeps me interested in Canoo is the military truck model, it has this honeycomb structure under the body panels and a tough coating that resists damage when off roading in the bush. There is one other thing and they have been talking about it - the military version has a range of 500 miles. If I can get that in the Canoo van model then I will buy it. I will check into the Telo cause until now I have never heard of it. But like you I really like the Aptera, not very practical for a family vehicle but I would sell my first child to get the 1,000 mile range version Aptera! Thanks for the information and I am now a subscriber.

i like telo from the tiny amount iv'e seen of it. but, how long? canoo has already been too long. with telo however, looks like they just have a stripped down electric side by side downstairs at someones loft space in the bay area (and i did pay attention to your previous vid on them). also i would not be able pitch the contract-production model as a good thing. i heard his rationale for this in your earlier vid, feels like he may just be drinking too much of his own cool-aid on that. it strikes me as more a tactical reality, rationalized as some kind of advantage. he should just sell platform kits. i would buy one! (i don't like the current telo "designer-try-hard" styling anyway). maybe i could even start my own company making build-out kits for his platform!

Meh. I'll stay with Aptera for now. However, IF Telo had Aptera's solar charging, DIY RTR, higher range(s), and lower price, it would be worth considering.

Well, when it comes to a 2 seater versus a 5 seater pick-up or Ute as we call them Down Under, as it is with cars, the same scenario seems to apply, namely that of only one or two people in the vehicle [most] of the time. To my mind, a 2 seater is a far more efficient vehicle, especially when we're talking about EV's, as your not having to carry around a lot of extra weight, making the vehicle far more fuel efficient, irrespective of 'fuel' type.

I am stating for the record that I believe neither will succeed. The issue isn't design or interest. The issue is "parts procurement". In the current economy they won't find a company to build their parts at a reasonable price, or maybe at any price. They will need to parts bin the project to get it off the ground. KIAs modular van, truck, fleet conversion system wins. They lose. They took too long.

You ever think about how the Telo could compete in the side by side atv market? New side by sides with heat and ac are already costing around $40,000.00. I think there could be some overlap there for people that aren’t interested in the off road aspect that much and just want a small utility vehicle.

I'm 110% looking for an overlanding rig. Learning more about Telo so we'll see how this shakes out. I do like the interior space and thought process on the Canoo truck with its modular design. Just want more options than the $100K Rivian (I wish), the apparently very flawed Cybertruck (seen enough videos of it struggling in the snow and on hills) and my poor Tesla Model Y who has taken soooo much off-road abuse. Love ya Grey Ghost TMY... You need more clearance and durability though.

I placed my Telo reservation yesterday. Oh, and by the way, I think that the Telo charge port should be on the driver's side rear fender for obvious reasons. I don't imagine many people will be towing with Telo. Those who do, should be able to purchase an extension cord to make charging without unhitching possible.
