I keep coming back to this great version of Cantaloupe Island: the deft reharmonizations, the phrasing… a great tribute to the world of Kenny Kirkland and Herbie Hancock. Such wonderful playing.

I don't believe that I've ever Herbie do a version except on acoustic piano. I really enjoyed hearing you do it on electric piano.

He did a version on his 1976 album, "Secrets" - with lots of Rhodes and Synths and more of a reggae feel!

@@MikePensini ok I know what you're talking about. Once upon a time when I was a kid my nana bought for me the platinum selling Headhunters LP. Watermelon Man was the second track on side A of that four track disk. Chameleon was of course the track that made the big splash. Indeed that was the recording that was my first exposure to the tune ( Watermelon Man ). You gave it away when you mentioned that Herbie redefined it using a reggae idiom.

Thanks mate. Some chord ideas I like are: - approaching the chord from a semitone above or below - modulating the chord up a minor 3rd - modulating the chord down a tone - substituting various diminished chords - substituting various melodic minor chords

got myself that nord about a year ago after playin rhodeses for many years and think the sound you're getting is about as close as it gets. great job with a great song. thanks for postin.

Thanks man. The stage is a good keyboard as is the electro. I'm happy with the electro for my jazz/funk needs as it covers the electromechanical side of things nicely and it's very portable/reliable.

@@MikePensini I use Zorin which is a very sophisticated version of the Linux distro Debian. I've encountered great difficulty finding a software synth similar to Keyscape. Do you do freeware or is everything that you have paid and/or proprietary?

Thanks man. The Rhodes sound is from the Nord. Bass and drums are backing track. The other synths in the pic are an Alesis ION and a Korg MicroPreset M500.

Thanks man. The Delay is from a Behringer FEX800 Multi FX Unit. The Bass and Drums are live but pre recorded. This was recorded using a Microsoft webcam for video and a Behringer USB Audio Interface for sound. I've just upgraded my whole computer setup, so I'm about to record a bunch of new tunes in even better quality. Stay tuned!

Thanks man, the Nord Keyboard feel is not weighted, but not 'synth' either - it's somewhere in between. It's great for Hammond and Clav sounds and definitely usable for Rhodes - although it may take a little getting used to if you're used to a weighted action. I have the Electro 2 73. The box is a Behringer Multi FX Unit.

Hey, I've been playing since I was 4 so that's 22 years. Yes, I find you have to adjust your technique somewhat when playing organ. Still, good classical piano technique eg good hand position, curved fingers, not moving wrists etc still apply to organ playing. Of course, there are a few tricks such as palm swipes/glisses/slides etc that only apply to organ playing. Cheers.

@groovatious This is the reason I intend to get one and put into my rig. The electro has, hands down, the best possible Rhodes and B3 samples in existence. Playing is not too bad, either.

This keyboard (the Electro) has 100% vintage sounds, the Nord Lead has pads/leads/basses and the Nord Stage has both.

On the Electro, I'm pretty sure this is just the Mark1 Suitcase patch with a touch of overdrive on the lowest level. I'm also running it through a delay.

I really can't understand why so many people rated you this negative. But, ok, let me help you. Those keyboards are not discontinued, the one on top is the Alesis Ion, is reasonably easy to find on Ebay, a hot toy for synthetic sounds, if you ask me. The Nord Electro down there sounding like a Fender Rhodes piano is a top keyboard, is not that rare and costs your two legs, arms and one kidney.

Thanks man. Harmony at 3:40 is using 'So What' voicings (4th, 4th, 4th, 3rd) and moving it up in Tones/Semitones. I can't remember exactly what I played for the LH voicings at start of solo, but they look/sound like Fm6 (Ab, C, D, G) and a close 3note voicing for the Db (Bb, Bnat and Eb)

@groovatious hey!! i didnt really expect a reply. =]. the phraze i posted is in greek ( using latin alphabet characters ) it generally means that i admire your play ( style, touch of the keys and most of all you presicion and feel on every note... ) you gave me a whole different dimention of cantaloupe island to look up to and im think im gonna try to do a similar version of it in my exams at the end of this academic year :P

That was phenomenal. I practice using the same backing track and I thought I was doing ok until I heard your interpretation. Now I'm not sure if I'm inspired or depressed. I loved the chord substitutions over the first Fm7 when you start the melody in the head. I've made a recording of you playing and am going to have to spend an hour or so listening carefully to see what you're up to.

Thanks mate. The ION is pretty cool. Use it mainly for analog leads/basses and pads. It's one of the more 'analog' sounding VAs out there.
