This piece is one of the "Cantigas de Santa Maria" (Cantiga #1: Des oge mais quér' éu trobar) collected by King Alphonso X, El Sabio in the 13th century, a sequence of songs dedicated to Mary, the Mother of God. Many of these cantigas had a rather lively character, so I suppose they could be played as dances, too! This cantiga especially features the drone on the mountain dulcimer...
(C-G-C tuning, Capo 1- D minor)
Arrangements of this song also appear in my book and DVD set "Mountain Dulcimer Wildflowers,” in my digital book “Cantigas de Santa Maria,” and on my album, “Songs of the Earthly Pilgrimage”: www.jessicacomeaudulcimer.com...

Thank you! I don't have tab for this piece yet; I usually like to learn songs by ear. However, I have been working on writing several pieces of tablature for traditional songs lately, so I may tab out this cantiga one day! I first heard it played by an ensemble called Broceliande, which specializes in Medieval and Renaissance music. Which Sephardic songs do you like to play?

Have you explored some of the other cantigas de Santa Maria? IIRC, these songs were popular with pilgrims on the road to Santiago de Compostela, and it was El Rey Alfonso (El Sabio, the wise) who collected them in written form. I'm sure they were danced as well as sung.

That's wonderful news, Joe! Our Pensacola Mountain Dulcimer Wildflowers "Dulcimer in Your Closet Project" is dedicated to encouraging people to bring out their dulcimers from hiding and play them and to celebrating those who have done so, so I'm happy to hear that the mountain dulcimer has re-emerged as a bigger part of your life. :-) Did you happen to find Broceliande's "Cantiga Medely"? That's the recording that familiarized me with this particular cantiga. Enjoy exploring the world of medieval music on the mountain dulcimer!

My friends and I started playing a role playing game called Dungeons & Dragons. I opted to play a Gnome who is a Bard. During my character creation I was given the option of an instrument to play so I selected the dulcimer. Not knowing what that is, I googled it and your video popped up and so I thought that your music would be perfect to play during the game to provide another level of experience. Then as luck would have it, I was able to find your ablum on iTunes (which is really awesome). We played our game this past weekend and everyone loved it. Your music was enjoyed by the group as they envisioned my bard being the musician while I played the music from my iPhone. Thanks again for your music and allowing us to enjoy it during our game.
