Askeladd missed the vital spot of Bjorn, a mistake which never has happened to him. Bjorns words touched him to an extend in which he couldn‘t concentrate on the fight anymore. It just shows how brilliantly this show is written

I started tearing up because I realized that Askeladd lost his only friend, and he had to end him himself

11:45 'Karlsefni' Isn't actually Thorfinn's last name. It's an epithet (like 'The Great'), meaning 'A Real Man' or something along those lines. It just shows how word is spreading about him amongst the rank and file of the Danes.

That ending, Bjorn and Askeladd. I hoped somewhat that Thorfinn would realize what a true duel looked like. Thorfinn has dueled Askeladd so many times for nothing, zero repercussions. Someone would die at the end of a duel, and Bjorn is such a real one for it. Even when at his death and he needed to grip his weapon, he grabbed onto Askeladd instead. This show is so freaking gooood.

that bit at the end with Bjorn is so completely perfect, because it really highlights the true cost of what Askeladd has chosen to do all his life. all this time, Askeladd has hated the Danes. he's hated his crew, and the king, and half of who he is. and that's how he's justified it all. he keeps doing heinous things, over and over again, killing beloved family members... entire villages of people... random slaves who happen to look like royalty... and Askeladd can do this, secure in the knowledge that he has nothing of value that they could take from him in return. it's the only viable defense... they can't hit him where it hurts. but why is that? think about it. it's been implied that, in Thors, Askeladd saw something akin to the Artorius legend his mother spoke about. a true warrior, who could properly lead... a man who made him want to follow. and he killed him. because that's what Askeladd does with anything he really, truly wants. he covers it up, and buries it deep... he never commits to it when it counts, and sometimes, he destroys it entirely. only to realize, just a little too late, how important it was. his true friendship with Bjorn is the same way. this is a man who has followed Askeladd diligently since before Thorfinn even came along in the first place. Bjorn knows him better than anyone... he always knew when something was up with Askeladd, and he was always on Askeladd's side, no matter which way he pivoted. Bjorn dedicated his life to him, with each and every decision to stay. over and over again, he wouldn't choose anything else. but if Askeladd cares for anything, then that's a crack in his armor. and he spends so much time strategizing for the purpose of exploiting those weaknesses in others... of course he'd want to cover it up, if he finds that same kind of weakness within himself. on the same token... if Askeladd understands how much he's caused other people to suffer, then he knows what he's owed for the things he's done. the weight of a lifetime's worth of crimes is only held at bay by his unwillingness to face the true importance of everything he's ever truly loved. if someone really wanted to hurt him... what could they do? they can't rob him of anything important, if he never lets himself have it in the first place. isn't it lonely? Askeladd can be callous, and cruel, and unyielding in his pragmatism, because he's already hurt himself worse than anyone else could. that's what this really is. time and time again, Askeladd has chosen to dedicate himself only to the things he hates. he's lived as a Dane. he hates Danes. he would've sold the young men in Thors' crew into slavery, he watched that slave girl from episode 8 get abused, he used a slave to impersonate Canute, even knowing she'd be killed... and he still becomes incensed at the mere implication of disrespect toward his mother, who was enslaved and kept in the stables. it seems like hypocrisy, until you realize that he truly believes in "an eye for an eye," to the point where he'd dig his own right out of his skull, so he could get away with stabbing his enemy's. in the world as Askeladd sees it, everyone suffers equally, and nobody gets what they want. the problem being: all this shit still mattered to him. he still suffers the loss. Bjorn really was his true friend, and the two of them couldn't even admit it to each other until it was time for Bjorn to die. Askeladd is simply robbing himself of the time he could've spent dedicating himself to the things he actually wants. and honestly, he's taught Thorfinn to do the same damn thing. when Leif tries to tell Thorfinn about Helga and Ylva, Thorfinn doesn't even want to hear it, and he never chose to ask. I do believe that he still loves them... he used to know how to miss them. but now, Thorfinn only maintains his dedication toward a man he hates. and if he kills him, what will he have gained? anything at all? and how does that stack up to all the things he's lost? but yeah... I really do think that Bjorn was the only one astute enough to see Askeladd for who he really was. he's always understood what Askeladd's been doing to himself. in some ways, I think Bjorn might've wanted to fix it. but Bjorn didn't have any of the answers either. they were both stuck like that. that's what warrior culture truly is, and I think it's another piece in the observation that these men lack a true understanding of love. if you live like this, you cannot have it. no matter how much it may try to exist, it cannot be allowed.

Bjorn's death scene was important to understand Askeladd's character, and just a good scene in its own right. But remember earlier on in the episode we also had Thorfinn 'rejecting everything' for revenge, including Leif and his own family. I wonder if the mangaka considered cutting to Thorfinn's face as well when Bjorn asks "Aren't you lonely?" to Askeladd to emphasize the connection. But maybe he thought that moment felt right only between Bjorn and Askeladd.

I like this episode🥹Rest in peace Bjom. "Kalrsefni" is not Thorfinn's surname. It's a nickname given to him. In this time period, people probably didn't have surnames, except for nobles. Instead, it was important to communicate your roots and lineage. In other words, to tell people whose son you are.

I remember it took me the whole season to see how interesting a person Askalad is. While you saw it directly. You saw directly through his lie that he wanted Thors as the leader, but told it was a joke after. You did not fall for it. This is one of the reasons I love to watch reactions. Because I watched it again, because you see or hear things I do not, and because of the comment section and the extra information. It makes you appreciate an anime even more! Thanks for doing this. 26:53 A couple of things I want to mention here. First, when I watched episode 4, I never would've believed I would cry for Bjorn. I did, though. I cried because he said he wanted to be Askeladd's friend; I'd never really paid attention to how obviously he displayed this fact throughout the season until he said it. It was so sad to me. I also want to point out that his apology to Thorfinn is really sweet too; he realized that Askeladd's devotion to his cause and Thorfinn's devotion to his revenge were the same, and I think he would've wanted to befriend Thorfinn as well had circumstances been different. Bjorn was a real one. You're in for such a treat next episode. ^.^

It's crazy how they can make you feel for Bjorn even though he's also a pretty bad person. Everyone in this show is just written so well.

Pretty sure Bjorn was referring to the fact Askladd hates Dane's and despite knowing him for years he never confided this to Bjorn so he felt a bit betrayed that he thought despite being friends Askeladd never told him about his past.

communication between enemies is a must so that there are no misunderstandings. Askeladd wants a long term fight with Sweyn and used Gunnar to communicate it. IRL, Russia has been saber rattling with nuclear weapons but at the same time been transparent with their land based nuclear weapon movements. during peace and under the current war in ukraine, the policy of transparency in their mobile land nuclear weapons announces their intention to the west. louder than any public threat or red line to the west.

Bjorn & Askeladd besto friends, sad Bjorn’s story ended here and Askeladd missing in a fight the vital points emphasis something, he seems disturbed, I wonder if it will affect his following duel with Thorfinn. Spoiler but not really, you know who the main character is and the name of this anime. ... Karlsefni was the "last name" of the historical Thorfinn. This ties the character to that figure. Edit: minimized the details.

Karlsefni is a nickname meaning "makings of a man". Would not recommend Google-ing it for future spoiler reasons.

I don't mind 23 and 24 being separate, you definitely need to watch them together though. It is funny seeing people "starting a revolution" in the comments though.
