If you do an internet search for “grand canyon of Michigan” you will undoubtedly find Canyon Falls just south of L’Anse Michigan near the Keweenaw peninsula in Michigan’s upper peninsula along US 41. This had been on my bucket list for quite some time. Which means when the opportunity to hike this roughly 4 mile out-and-back trail presented itself I just couldn’t pass it up.
Over time, the Sturgeon River has carved into the earth creating this stunning gorge with a series of rapids and small waterfalls. It may not be as grand as some of the geological features you might find in the western US but it is stunning none-the-less.
The trailhead begins at a roadside park along US 41. You will notice blue blazes along this trail as Canyon Falls is also on the North Country Trail; a 4800 mile national scenic trail that traverses from Vermont to North Dakota, passing through New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Minnesota.
