Canyons of the Ancients and Hovenweep are two lesser-known and more lightly visited National Monuments in southwest Colorado and just over the border into SE Utah. Canyons has the highest density of archeological sites in North America with easily accessible pueblos, including one at the Visitor Center in Dolores, Colorado, as well as hiking trails with beautiful canyon views and the opportunity to visit archeological sites along the way. Hovenweep has a collectionof Puebloan structure built on canyon rims and accessible on a 2-mile walking loop.
Neither monument is a substitute for nearby Mesa Verde, but are great additions if you'd like a bit more of a self-guided experience. If you visit, please be respectful of the sites and the natural resources - stay on the trails, leave any artifacts where you find them, and don't enter or climb on the structures. Because this is a less managed space, it relies heavily on its visitors for preservation and protection.
