How to cap off, turn off, remove, disable your un-needed sprinkler heads correctly.
You can buy the 1/2-inch caps and 3/4-inch caps here:
1/2-inch threaded PVC Cap: amzn.to/31D8wMt
3/4-inch threaded PVC Cap: amzn.to/3b8NrwG
I have created another video as reminder to make sure anyone who will be pouring concrete for slab, driveway, foundation, etc... do not forget to cap off their sprinkler heads (please make sure you watch it):
• Do this before pouring...

Thanks for the video and links. I was quoted $300 to cap three sprinkler heads. Now I am going to try it myself.

Did this today. I used a little teflon tape and definitely needed the channel locks to get it threaded all the way in. It worked well. Thanks again.

Thank you! I’m removing the grass in my dog area and converting to mulch and adding a pad for shed so I needed to ‘turn off’ those heads. I’ll still have access to them since it’ll only be mulch but it’s all part of a zone

Thank you ! I have some that the concrete has already been done and a small hole for the pop-up sprinkler heads were flooding my porch and surrounding areas ! I turned the little screw clockwise and turned most of them off but one won't turn . I didn't know they could be screwed off and plugged . Thanks again !

Thanks. When they pour gravels and concrete over the sprinkler lines and capped lines will they be damaged or cracked due to the weight and force? Will it be better to completely reroute?
@DIYGEEKTEXAS
@DIYGEEKTEXAS 3 года назад
@shohoku81 as long as the bottom of the capped off sprinkler pipe have soil supporting the pipe, it should not break or crack due to pressure from top. Generally small diameter PVC pipe are more rigid than soil so it should move soil before cracking. Of course re-route is the safest thing to do. However it cost a lot to re-route. At my home I have a water leak monitoring service free from my water district. If I have an on-going leak, I would know it within 24 hours, check if you have something like this.

I need to find the sprinkler line because that's exactly what happened to my house previous owners did a concrete slab on top of sprinkler head now I need to dig it up and cap it
@DIYGEEKTEXAS
@DIYGEEKTEXAS 3 года назад
Sorry to hear about your covered up sprinkler head, you have to cap otherwise it will keep watering and will cause a empty space under your concrete. Try to find / trace from the sprinkler valve.

So no plumbers cement needed, just screw it on? I'm doing the same, pouring concrete over
@DIYGEEKTEXAS
@DIYGEEKTEXAS 3 года назад
@M M correct, plumbers PVC glue/cement not needed, screwing the cap tight is enough to provide a good seal. 99% of all sprinkler connections are screw or barb connections without use of glue/cement. Of course if you want to be extra secure you can put glue

This does not take into account the need to winterize the pipe leading up to the capped off head.

What about in areas that may freeze in winter. Will water get trapped in the line then freeze and break that line?
@Heyman1982
@Heyman1982 Год назад
You can buy shut off caps that screw into the top of the head after removing the guts. When blowing your system out for winter just take the cap off.

So I’m trying to cap my sprinkler head but when I measured the size, it was one inch. But. Is I can’t find any cap that is 1inch, only 1/2in….
@edwardrose8047
@edwardrose8047 3 года назад
I would have took the time to remove and reroute so none of the irrigation is under concrete. If it fails and you have a leak under the slab what a mess you will have
@DIYGEEKTEXAS
@DIYGEEKTEXAS 3 года назад
@Edward Rose You are right, in perfect scenario and unlimited time/budget you would backtrace and dig out all sprinkler pipes those will be under concrete. But backtracking and removing existing sprinkler pipes is very time consuming. Or you can cut off directly from valve if you know that branch of sprinkler is the only branch from a particular valve. In my opinion the amount of effort to perform both of those above are very costly. There is a small chance pipe under concrete and a few inches of dirt will leak in future, if it does leak you will probably notice with water pooling. Imho I would rather take that chance and fix later.

Would it be also better to use Teflon tape or is that an overkill.
@DIYGEEKTEXAS
@DIYGEEKTEXAS 3 года назад
If you have Telfon tape handy... sure why not, but it is not necessary, I have done this pipe cap many times, I always test afterwards, it never leaked.

I have a zone with only one sprinkler. Will capping that do harm to the system?
@omarrivera3180
@omarrivera3180 3 года назад
Generally no, assuming that the joints of your system are glued correctly and you have SCH 40 PVC pipe and fittings. The SCH 40 pipe is rated for up to 300 PSI. Capping the one sprinkler, will not harm the system.
@Loudly9661
@Loudly9661 Год назад
I did this, but when the system is on (there are still some zones that I didn’t cap off) there’s still some leakage coming from the capped pipe. Is that normal?

What about areas that freeze and need to be flushed water will sit in that pipe and crack when frozen
@MYCHANNELWITHMYSTUFF
@MYCHANNELWITHMYSTUFF 28 дней назад
yes it will. you have to go all the way back to the PVC mainline that head connects to and cap it there.

Will capping off 4 sprinklers in one zone affect the rest? It’s a walkway on the side of the house that I want to put pavers instead of grass.

Your video is very useful for me. I used with short riser when I capped off a gear sprinkler. Is it not good idea?
@DIYGEEKTEXAS
@DIYGEEKTEXAS 2 года назад
Thanks for watching! Yes that should be fine. It is less safe because you have more parts after PVC pipe that can break and leak etc. But considering they will be underground undisturbed, you should be good.

@DIYGEEKTEXAS
@DIYGEEKTEXAS 3 года назад
@Marco Jacinto Yes after sprinkler heads removed and capped, these are just lines (pipes) filled with water. If any of the pipe leaks in the future, I can also just disconnect them from the sprinkler valve.

This method is not ideal. You are capping on top of plastic riser. These risers fall apart over time . Should cut pipe and reroute system. Nothing should be under new concrete. Pay now or you will pay later.
