I wonder if movie directors actively dream up of meme-able scene. Can't imagine a hot shot director saying. 'no, act this scene more stupidly, we need meme fuel'
I remember both the "Tide goes in, Tide goes out" and the "Are you serious?" meme stemming from the same clip in 2011. But such a meme density is rare indeed.

The reason he understands that reference is because the "Flying Monkeys" were the Witch's cronies in the Wizard of Oz, a movie that must have came out when Steve was a young teenager. So yes I understood that reference, too.
He couldn't have seen the movie as a teenager. Talkies had only come out a few years prior. Technicolor didn't come out until after he got turned into a capsicle. However, the book series is old enough that he would have read it.
... ..... ....... Okay not a young teenager but a few years before he went off to war. The Wizard of Oz came out, in colour, in 1939. Asia Russell needs to reread up on history. (Also Technicolor became a thing in 1916, before he was born)

It's ironic that characters that used to be unpopular came to be much more popular thanks to MCU. Iron Man the biggest example, never thought he'd one day be even more popular than Spider-Man.
@@KaySquay Which means he's the most hardcore Tolkien fan out there coz that came out 1937, and it wasn't exactly easily distributed to the US yet, so Bucky somersaulted through a lotta hoops to get a fresh copy of that.
People forget Steve probably said this because he's surrounded by things that he doesn't know or doesn't understand yet( Example: Coulson mentioning Stephen Hawkins, everything that comes out of Tony's mouth) so hearing something familiar would be a godsend
Actually I think that's why people love this scene. It's pretty clear that Steve's ears perked up and he was relieved to understand something that somebody else didn't because he's in an unfamiliar world. I think most people with even a basic level of emotional maturity would understand.

This is even funnier when you watch from the beginning. Steve is so clueless at every joke and reference until this point. Which makes him so proud he understood something 😂😂
For someone who doesn't know much of the modern world and who still trains at of fashioned gyms, it must feel pretty good having something familiar, even if it's just a reference
If captain America was born in, July 4, 1918, like the internet says, he would have been, 22 when the wizard of oz came out, in 1939. And he COULD have seen it before enlistment because, the US started enlistment in September 16, 1940. So yes, he did indeed understand that reference.
Even crazier how different they look now lol ones a wrinkly old man, ones always green, one is a pile of dust, one put on 100 lbs and Fury and Hill are basically the same.
The Glaive! I was the only one in the whole fucking theatre who understood that reference. Others were like, "Oh, ah, there is that gay chick from Overwatch!" but then few minutes later at the Glaive scene they all were in complete silence, while I almost jizzed in my pants.
I cry every time I watch the deleted scene where Steve is sitting at this cafe and the waitress said "we have wifi" and steve's like "radio?" those small things like that make me cry every single time. I feel so bad for him. :'( He's my all time favorite character and I can't help but feel like CA2 will make me cry the whole way through for those reasons...Steve is trying to adapt to our world and it's going to be such a struggle for him.
You know, I find that later movies are missing this type of humor from Cap. The more movies he's in, the more he's a completely infallible noble hero. Which I get, he's supposed to be a real-life goodie two shoes character, but this type of shortcoming was funny and still completely innocent. But on the other hand, I guess the longer he adapts to modern culture, the less foreign the references become to him.
John O This kind of humour came from his cluelessness.He matured and got more serious when he witnessed the corruption in The Winter Soldier. But even in that movie he made some jokes such as "On your left!".
This is actually really sad. He has no one from his lifetime who's still alive. Everything he knows is different and everything he's used to is drastically out of date. There's nothing in this world he can cling to for a sense of familiarity, save maybe a museum. So FINALLY, someone says something he knows about and he can relate with, but he blows his response by being too eager and looking silly to everyone. This is Steve Rogers, alone.
What an incredibly endearing and organic line. Of course Steve feels a little outside the group when it comes to pop culture, and of course he'd be really excited when he actually gets one of their references. It's completely relatable, and hilarious.
I love that he was genuinely excited to understand a cultural/media reference because of how many references, whether jokes or just common turns of phrase, he wouldn’t understand because of how many monumentally influential events he’s missed.
When you think about it, it is really sad, Steve gets happy when someone finally say something he understand, can you imagine living in a world where everything is different to what you know? How scary that is?
